Infinite Tech Preview Feedback: Controller Aiming

Hoping to be sent an official survey, so I can hopefully reach 343 on this issue, but I might as well put it out to the community. Halo Infinite aiming settings for controller are not great. Aim feel is definitely leagues above Halo 5, but that’s not a very hard bar to surpass. The controller aim settings are just not up to par with the competition, and sadly, even MCC(which has great aiming options). Apex, Fortnite, and even the last couple COD games, including the juggernaut that is Warzone, have vastly superior tuning options, which can help those who desire a better aiming experience find their way. I have settled into some pretty good setting during the tech preview that allow me to shoot a 50-60% accuracy pretty easily, but more options would allow myself and others to have a more consistent and comfortable aiming experience, especially across different games.

So to start off, the deadzone settings are not as in depth as they should be. Similar to Halo 5, setting deadzone 0 does not produce a 0% deadzone. I do not have the proper equipment to test this, but if the deadzone system is the same as Halo 5, this would mean there is about a 12% axial deadzone that cannot be tweaked by the player. Regardless, there is some sort of a deadzone left at 0 setting, and it’s for sure larger than 5% (I personally use a 4% deadzone in games). The other competition I listed above, including MCC, allow the player to adjust their deadzones down to 0% in most cases. This can be helpful as some controllers have “built in” deadzones (Razer Wolverine V2 and PowerA Fusion Pro to name a couple). I play on a controller with complete sensitivity (Razer Wolverine Ultimate) and prefer a low 4% deadzone. On a standard Xbox Series X controller I play with about a 7 or 8%. Halo Infinite simply doesn’t allow this. This is why even as far back as Halo 3 and Reach, games like COD have felt better as far as aiming goes. CODs deadzones were lower, even though not by much. Games like COD and Apex come standard with 7% and 10% deadzones respectively. Please, 343, if you’re going to fix one of my mentioned issues, let it be this.

Secondly, allowing players to adjust response curves can be a big help. Again the competition I listed above (with the exception of MCC) allow the player to adjust their response curves between at least Exponential and Linear. Let players decide what feels best for them and their aim and please include this feature in Infinite.

Implementing these features and others that the competition has implemented (see Apex’s crazy advanced aim menu, and Fortnite’s advanced aim settings) can drastically help improve comfort and aim for many players that want to enjoy Infinite to its fullest.

All I can say at this point is please, 343. Please.

Forgive my ignorance, but can you explain what “Deadzone” is and what it does?

A deadzone is the center of a control stick where input from the user is ignored. In Infinite, if similar to Halo 5 as it seems to be, the deadzone is about 23%. This means that the cursor in game will not begin to move until the user has moved the stick 24% of the way in a given direction. This can be problematic as it takes away the players ability to finely aim using small movements in the center of the stick.

The lesser the deadzone, the less it takes for the player character to turn or look?

The less physical input on the stick it takes to start looking, yes.

Deadzone should be allowed to be finetuned 100%. I agree with this post.

Aiming setting need to be reworked to be more like other halo games because it even have to battle with two or three bots just think we we start playing pvp people will not like the aiming in this game if they don’t work on it

Agreed! I’m really hoping this gets refined. The old MCC Halo games can’t be more accurate than a game in 2021.
One of the first things I noticed in the tech preview was how much undershoot / overshoot there was, and then saw in their settings it was at Deadzone 12.0 - which I thought explained it… Since playing the Flight & turning the controller DZ settings to 0.0, it just still isn’t enough - you can’t make small motions with accuracy.

(That aside, I had a lot of fun with the game demo!)

I concur.
