The innovations Reach made were great. 4 strictly ripper modes, abilities, and ideas from other games. Which is precisely what Halo doesnât need. Thereâs a way they could make a Halo battle royale but 1, I donât think theyd ever actually do it and 2, it wouldnât exactly make a lot of sense in a mainline title.
To elaborate, I think the most obvious approach to a Halo BR would be an ODST drop pod free for all, dropping from a pod that can be steered to the desired insertion point on a large map styled as New Mombasa, with urban and rural locations, featuring various vehicles. Toss in Haloâs unique weapons as loot in the environment, starting with a magnum with one mag worth of ammo, an armor system for toughening up your character, and choice vehicles and you would have something pretty unique in the BR market. Styled as an ODST training exercise, with sick ways to customize ODST character models. Weâve already seen how cool that could look visually, given some of the unique designs on Dutch, Romeo, etc. The âstormâ / closing circle on the map could just be covenant glassing beams or something.
That being said, itâs ODSTS, which would be an odd choice in a mainline title unless the BR was a stand-alone game adjacent to a main title as opposed to being its own, akin to something like Warzone in CoD.
You could make it work with Spartans similarly but the two main issues are that lore and immersion wise it makes a little less sense for them to run a training exercise that way, and the shield system would be odd to work around. Picking up overshields as loot is the most obvious choice, but youâre talking about very long time-to-kill in a game mode thatâs sort of meant to turn into a pressure cooker over a short period of time with one wrong move resulting in a very quick death, and only one player or team of players walking away with a W. Shields and overshields run counterintuitive to that.
The thing is, I donât even think they will attempt it, and if they do, itâs probably something thatâs going to seem halfâYoinked!-. I would prefer that they just forgo it altogether and come up with entirely new game modes that we havenât seen elsewhere yet. Or put new spins on it. Itâs easier and sometimes a lot more innovative with less effort to put a new twist on something like plain old Slayer, game mechanics, CTF, etc than it is to make an entire unique battle royale.
