Infinite looks like a HALO game

This is going to be long…

So we’ve all seen the new Slip Space engine demo or teaser for Halo: Infinite, and correct me if I’m wrong but theres seems to be way more excitement and hype for Infinite than Halo 4 of 5…and that’s just based off of an engine demo. here is what we know so far…

  • We’re getting a more classic Halo art style (at least from what we’ve seen)
  • We’re going to be on a Halo ring (at least from what we’ve seen)
  • There are RUMORS that Infinite will be open world (This isn’t confirmed)
  • Master Chief will once again be the main playable character
  • 4 player split screen is back!

With all of that being said, I’m curious as to what direction 343i will take the 1) the gameplay 2) the story 3) the multiplayer & 4) the music. Just out of curiosity, I want to know what the rest of the Halo community would like to see, what concerns you may have, and way that 343i could innovate but also keep Halo: Infinite a real HALO game. I have respect for 343i, and I think they are very talented game developers. On the flip side, Halo 4 & 5 were great games and could stand up to any AAA game in terms of quality (for the most part)…the issue that I have with these games is that they don’t look, sound, or feel like Halo games at all to me.

Have you ever played Halo 3 and then played Halo 4 right after? They don’t even feel like there part of the same franchise. Playing Halo 4 almost makes me feel like the previous 5 games didn’t even exist. When I saw the teaser for Infinite it immediately made me think of the original Halo trilogy, ODST & Reach. Don’t get me wrong…This is a GOOD thing, my only concern is going to be the continuity from Halo 5 to Infinite. Going from Halo 3 to Halo 4, or Reach to Halo 4 for me is JARRING, also Halo 4 & 5 had almost zero continuity, they didn’t even feel like they had anything to do with each other. How can 343i make Halo: Infinite classic but also keep it fresh? How can they fix the terrible story of Halo 5 but make Infinite’s story decent? How can they explain the art style change in game? How can the multiplayer return to it’s roots but also keep it modern? Will they keep war zone or will traditional firefight make a return? Or maybe they have something totally different in mind?

If you read all of this thank you. I just want to know everyone thoughts on the matters stated above.

Excitements:

  • It looks FANTASTIC - Brings back a mix of the new engine with the classic game engine (BLAM) - Brings Mystery back to the spectrum of Halo’s feel as well as sweet music Concerns:

  • Wondering how the community will react to which gameplay mechanics 343i choose, but if it’s classic, I’m sure people who disagree with it will mostly change their minds about it after some time. - If it’s going to be rated M for mature instead of T for teen, this factor actually plays into how the game looks and feels a lot. (Example: Halo 3 = M, Halo 5 = T) - A good story writer for the campaign, how 343i are going to get out of the story-hole they dug themselves into

That’s probably as likely as the people who’d disagree with it if it’s modern mostly changing their minds after some time.

We’ll just have to see when we get a legitimate gameplay trailer. It’s hard to tell what a game will look like simply from a teaser trailer for the game engine.

Exactly, we have nothing but an engine demo to go with. We need more info imo.

I’m optimistic. Keep in mind that none of those assets are in the game just for the trailer. That armour 100% isn’t the one we will be using in campaign.

It definitely looks and sounds like Halo so far but we’ve only seen a tiny bit. I’m pretty excited but worried about gameplay. I know 343i is doing a lot better with feedback and communication but they’re also very prideful. I’m worried the gameplay will follow Reach/4/5’s examples and once again not feel like a Halo game even if it is a good game in and of itself.

but will it play/feel like a halo game

thats the real question…

Well, they don’t have to. I won’t be losing any sleep over it if they don’t clarify the change in-universe. It’s like swapping lenses through which you look at the world. Yeah the lens changed, but the world seems the same to me. I was also never bothered by why Chief’s armour changed from his nap in Halo 3 going into Halo 4.

I agree with everything you said. 4 and 5 feel drastically different but I’ve always had a hard time criticizing the game simply because if they had had different titles… they would have been good games.

Its simply because they carried the Halo moniker but tasted nothing like Halo that bothered everyone.

My hopes lie in the talent that they hire to:

  1. write the story
  2. compose the music

now, let me expand briefly on 1 and 2 and why my hopes lie there.

  • They fired the narrative director that brought us 4 & 5.
-shortly after the Slipspace engine demo at e3 2018, Marty O’Donnell tweeted a photo of Joe Staten Jen Taylor and himself out to lunch together.

he followed this tweet up with another tweet saying “we missed you Steve Downes” —- for those that don’t know Marty is the musical director and composer from Halo CE through Reach, Joe Staten is the original Halo Narrative Director, Jen Taylor is Cortana and Steve Downes is Master Chief. So the idea of them together right after the Halo Infinite teaser is amazing, especially with them tweeting at Steve Downes like he was supposed to be there.

Of course people started asking him about the tweet and his final follow up was “there was nothing random about our meeting” —- to me that is almost proof positive that the OG team is back together to bring Halo Back to its glory days.

The idea that the original writer and musical composer might be working on Halo Infinite brings a tear to my eye.

All that’s left is for them to get rid of that terrible Forerunner design and then the game will at least look incredible

Do you mean the fancy new shiny Forerunner aesthetic? Because I agree with you 100%. The older games showed Forerunner structures as being highly advanced but still ancient, while the newer Forerunner designs look like they were built yesterday. It felt weird and unrealistic to have 100k year old structures without a spot of rust or aging on them.

YES! 1000x yes! The design lost it’s allure. There was an ancient mystery to Bungie’s art style when it came to the Forerunners, it made you want to know more. A stoicism? or reverence maybe? when you walked through a Forerunner structure. I never felt that in a 343 game.

Also, I wouldn’t mind if their forerunners took a huge backseat… they were a great idea just implemented poorly. They were absolutely NOT fun to fight. They were/are bullet sponges with very little feed back while shooting them. You just unload multiple clips while they continue advancing unhindered until they explode.

I feel it’s still WAY too early to come to any conclusions about Halo 6. Even things they have confirmed some of those things they have been vague on explaining.

We know are 4 player split screen is in along with LAN (THANK GOODNESS!!) But will LAN be like Halo 5 and still require an internet connection? Or will it truly be able to be offline like in the past. Has split screen been confirmed across the board? Aka for campaign and multiplayer? Armor customisation sounds promising as they said it will be more like Reach, but does that mean more option wise? Or do they mean the way you unlock stuff? The rumor of it being open world has just blown up because of the tech demo they showed which to me means nothing, it’s a TECH DEMO not a demo! LoL people that came to the conclusion that it’s open world because of that I think need to take a step back. Personally I would be pretty surprised if they went that route. The art style does look more like the classic Halo games, which I think is a good call and we know Spartans will have the black undersuit as well.

Gameplay wise, the Hale community is still pretty divided on this I’d say… The story just better hit it out of the park… The multiplayer, whatever style they end up doing, just better have a lot of content fromfthe get go and have playlists that people expect at launch, like doubles, a REAL BTB playlist amongst others. Music wise, I think the majority of people would absolutely love if Marty came back and did it, but as long as the music has more of a Halo 1,2,3 vibe, takes cues from those game and they use the themes from past Halo games (Master Chief, Chief about to go kick some butt, Halo Ring etc.) Then I think it will be okay.

Overall, I’m definitely taking the wait-and-see approach to Halo 6. Not bashing on 343I here but too many times in the past they have been misleading with things. Also, many of their decisions,in all areas of the game, in my opinion leave me scratching my head way too often. They seem to love changing things for the sake of change and I REALLY wish they would stop that. Anyone who has been around as long as I have know what has worked, what hasn’t and what the community is split on. I feel like they don’t know that, or choose to ignore, that sometimes and again it boggles my mind. They seem to have been getting better at listening to the community on things and I know you can’t please everyone but you can definitely try to please the majority.

Yes I will fully admit I will most likely get Halo 6 as I have been a fan in playing since CE, but when I get it and how much I pay for it is the real question.

Calling something that requires an internet connection “LAN” would be plain evil. We should probably give them the benefit of the doubt on that one and not assume they’re lying.

I think LAN in Halo 5 coming so late and requiring a separate app is the nature of why it requires internet connection. I don’t think H5 was designed with LAN in mind, so they had to jury rig something LAN-ish that would work with H5. If Infinite is teasing LAN this early, it sounds like it’s being designed with LAN functionality in mind, which if so would in all likelihood mean a traditional, offline LAN.

Whatever they due, I trust them to make the right decision. They know they can’t mess it up, so I know they won’t. I’m excited nonetheless.

Didn’t know Halo 5 has “LAN” (that’s a really unfortunate naming). I guess that explains why somebody would even question whether the LAN in Halo Infinite would require an internet connection. Maybe Halo 5 is so ingrained with the awful “always online” idea that it’s impossible to implement offline multiplayer, but if you’re making a game from scratch, there’s really no excuse to having anything but multiplayer with people outside your LAN require internet, In any case, if 343i for some reason wasn’t willing to implement actual LAN play, calling it “LAN” would be the wrong thing to do.
