Disappointed to see how it looks like 343 have elected to stay with their Bronze - Onyx ranking system. I know 1-50 and B-O is relatively similar in where you end up but personally find the 1-50 more satisfying and aesthetically pleasing.

Personally I liked the Bronze to Onyx. It’s a bit more interesting than 1-50.
And I guess they need to differentiate from the XP based Spartan Rank… which again looks like being a number.
And yes. 1-50 and B-O are identical underneath - an MMR based on TrueSkill2.
Im fine with either but if i were to choose i guess it would be the bronze-onyx for my preference or if they did a combination of both!

I’m glad they are keeping the H5 ranking. It works out better for the overall population of the game IMO compared to 1-50 and the main reason is if you have a player that is ranked 50 in Team Arena and then they stop playing, when they come back they may not still be at the skill level of other level 50 players, due to the seasonal system this allows the more active players to get a better idea of where they stand in the overall popuation of players. Another reason is that once you hit Onyx/Champ ranks you can actually see where you play in the world compared to others. I enjoyed fighting for the top Champion ranks in Doubles in H5 whereas once you get to rank 50 how do you tell how good you are against other 50’s?
I’m hoping that the population of Infinite will be a lot larger than H5 which will work better for the CSR system due to it needing a lot of players to work well.
The 1-50 is inherently broken due to derankers/boosters and is a miserable time for those who are lower ranked starting out as they end up playing with and against significantly better players who are moving through the levels which puts people off of ranked.
I think with a F2P model as well the number of smurfs would be insanely high.
The only thing I don’t like about Bronze - Onyx is how it resets after seasons. I think maybe it should reset if you don’t play that playlist for 2-3 months because you could be rusty. If you are playing the playlist regularly it seems a bit mad to have to do placements again every 1-3 months. I do like how you can’t get higher than Diamond 3 in placements in Halo 5 and have to grind to get to Onyx. I didn’t like early H5 where it only took 10 games to be max rank.

Keep in mind that these issues are separate fromt the 1-50 vs Bronze-Onxy.
Halo 2 had a problem with grinding at the high end and Halo 3 had massive issues with rank lock and boosting. The current TrueSkill2 system in Halo 5 and Infinite would not have these problems so 1-50 would work just as accurately as Bronze-Onyx.

Onxy players get to see their actual MMR number (or at least a very close approximation). You could do this for ‘50’ players as well.

Nail on the head. The system needs a large and active population to work properly. Fingers crossed.

Same as above. TrueSkill2 is much better at coping with this… so it wouldn’t matter if they used 1-50 or Bronze-Onxy as your CSR.

You’re sadly right… but at lease we know they will be re-ranked pretty quickly.

I think we’ve discussed this before. I don’t think 343 did a very good job of selling the whole seasonal thing. Your MMR doesn’t change… it just becomes more volatile so that it can quickly reasses and re-rank you. The antidote for Halo 3’s rank locking if you like. They should leave your rank visible to you… with the warning that it will wobble a bit… and then make it public again after your grading.
The grind from Diamond 3 to Onyx is also important. The system can work out that you are Onxy level very quickly… but it needs lots of games vs each other to work out the actual pecking order. If you want your MMR and divisions such as Champion then you need time / games under your belt. Maybe they would be better just making you Onyx and then waiting to the end of the season to give your MMR / Champ.
I’m honestly pretty glad 1-50 sucked IMO I had me feeling like I was trying to prestige or something
I know a lot of people don’t like it but me personally I loved the halo 2 ranking system… Numbers then the Moons, sun, black hole, comet and halo ring for 50 was just awesome!
1-50 system was a boring system, bronze to champion is a much better system and a lot more engaging.
