INFINITE FORGE: Keyboard and Mouse controls are ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS!

One of the problems I had with Forging in Halo 5 was that the controls were too complex & Not rebind-able, even on PC! So I couldn’t take advantage of any of its features, and thus couldn’t forge, which is why I left Halo 5.
Now I’m seeing the same issue in Halo Infinite, where many decisions with its control design make absolutely no sense!

Halo MCC, specifically Halos Reach, Halo 4, and H2A, are INFINITELY more easier to forge in simply because of how simple responsive, and user friendly the controls are. hit Halo Infinite repeats many of Halo 5’s problems when forging with Keyboard & mouse!

1) Why must I Hold RMB just to be able to look around? In MCC, I could just rotate the camera without needing hold anything.

2a) Why must I grab a specific point when manipulating an object? It’s FAR TOO CLUNKY! In MCC, I could just grab an object at any point of its surface and drag it anywhere.
2b) When moving an object, why must I hold LMB to drag it across the screen? It’s too inefficient . In MCC, I could just Tap the space-bar and the item is semi-permanently held, allowing me to move around the map freely with the item in tow with the WASD buttons, and my mouse without needing any additional buttons.

3) Why must I manually switch between Move Mode & Rotation mode using separate button combos? Why must I manually switch between them? It’s too tedious! In MCC, I could just hold 1 button, and use “WASD” to rotate the item in whatever item I desired, and release said button to resume moving the object. The process taking under 2 seconds, but doing this in Infinite takes 2 whole minutes!

4) Why must I deselect the object to try and view it from another angle? In MCC, I could grab an object by tapping space-bar, and USING NO BUTTONS, I could just slide my mouse around to orbit the selected object to view the space surrounding it.

5) Why do objects not move smoothly when selected? In MCC, the objects move smoothly, but in Infinite, they just snap to the nearest world unit without any movement transition. its weird.

6) Finally, WHY CAN’T WE REBIND THE FORGE CONTROLS? In Halo MCC, the Forge controls for each game had its own set of controls independent from the rest. But in Halo infinite, they’re directly synced with one’s spartan movement controls. WHY??? This makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE! Because moving in 3 dimensions requires a new layout of controls. MCC grants this, but Infinite doesn’t! There are 4 modes for controller, but there’s no way to change the forge controls on PC.

CONCLUSION:
Halo Infinite’s forge controls for movement and object manipulation are far too complex & clunky on PC. This feels like it was mainly tailored for Controller users, and I don’t have a controller. 343industries, I’M BEGGING YOU! PLEASE revamp the forge controls in Halo infinite for Keyboard & Mouse users to be more in line with that of MCC. I can hardly move or manipulate any objects with this new control system that is impossible to use.

I’m totally one board with how they have the controls as to your first point, but there should be some options to have a more classic feel. I generally am okay with the way movement works except for the arrows being way to hard to select properly. But I like have the movement modes separated. As to your 5th point, press “M” to turn off magnets to fix that.
We definitely need rebinding ability. Right now there’s not even a way to see the controls!

I have a 75% keyboard and the fact that I CANNOT USE THE NUMPAD is INSANE to me. Forge is absolutely amazing but how do you release a gamemode without allowing people to customize the controls? That’s not even a AAA standard. That’s a standard across ANY game now. 343i does so much wrong with the things that they do right. Hopefully they add this sooner than later

I’m a 3D artist by trade and these controls are actually pretty easy to get used to. They are somewhat similar to Maya, Unity, Unreal Engine, use. Forge is much closer to a modding tool than a map maker ever was I really like them and with time you’ll find that the controls speed up the workflow a lot.

I legit don’t even understand how to pick objects up and move them with M&K. I tried for over half an hour, tried looking for guides and tried changing controls or even looking for a control rundown and there nothing. Gave up and started using controller. I get its complex but man atleast teach people this stuff and have a visual control scheme.

  1. This is pretty normal for 3d modeling applications and game engines. Being able to hold a static camera angle is pretty beneficial for precision.

  2. Using the handle to move objects is just the 3D standard. Probably agree that it’s less efficient, but more intentional and precise.

  3. While W/E/R is standard, I’ve found this annoying and clunky too. I get that WSAD camera movement overlaps the standard for the move tool, but having to press ctrl is too clunky. Should just move move/rotate/scale to 1/2/3.

  4. I haven’t used forge that much, don’t quite know what you’re referring to. But on a similar note, having to close the properties/spawn menu to select a different object is infuriatingly clunky.

  5. This is ‘grid snapping’ and I’m pretty sure you can disable it and change the increments.

  6. I do hope they address this before forge is out of “beta.”
