As I had feared after learning of the shaders, and the whole idea of “curated” color schemes, I was extremely disappointed by the lack of PRIMARY/SECONDARY color selection. There was not a single shader preset in the flight that appealed to me that wasnt the flat all red and MAYBE the scorpion punch. Perhaps there will be many more options at launch but BASIC things should just be there by default. I.E there should be a a shader for every basic combination of Steel/Color and Color/Steel if they are taking such a simple system away from of for the sole purpose of being able to sell color schemes. I should be able to choose something like Steel/Blue or Blue/Steel but those options arent really there and that is a HUGE negative to a game that is CLAIMING to be all about player expression.
I agree.
They could add Primary, Secondary, Tertiary color channels ON TOP of Coatings.
Another customization slot named " Color channels " Best of both worlds!
Higher tier Coatings with more colored parts represent up to all three channels.
If more. You can max change 3 parts color channels at once unless adding a Quartiary channel aswell. OR the three channels color more than one part each.
You could work for unlocking each color channel options for any coatings seperately for free in each season pass etc.
The entire point of the system is that they want to be able to fire out coatings fast and with little effect on the system, which allows them to add thousands of coatings for maximum player expression options. It may look limited now, but a year from now we will have a BUNCH of options.

Oh I dont doubt that at all.
But imagine adding customization options around " Colour Channels " as a separate customization slot. For Primary/ Secondary/ Tertiary color channels?
It will as with coatings are now, add even more options for even several thousands more kinds of expressions, be it free, earned and paid.
Say… hmm. The Scorpion punch coating. Its Grey, black and red as far as I recall…
Wheras you unlock Primary color channel in one or two first season passes.
Then you could change the Grey channel, aka the color that covers most of the armor parts.
The pattern that is recognised as Scorpion Punch WILL still be there. The pattern is the core uniqueness of that coating, so there I agree it shouldnt change.
Later on you unlock the secondary color channels so you can change that and lastly tertiary color channel.
Now:
Scorpion Punch ( now, I dont remember exactly which colors are included in the coating, at least grey and red… )
Unique pattern: Right hand is one color, representing the " stinger " so to speak.
Grey → Hmm… Dark blue
Red - Lets say yellow
Black - > Red
And yes. Epic, Legendary copatings seems to have these different metal apperances, like more glossy, metallic, shiny etc. I do think that should stay with the uniqueness of the coating as well as the pattern.
Changing too much will maybe make the coating less unique and appealing even if high tier rewards/ purchases ( bundles ). Because being able to change that by saying unlocking Pattern and Armor Material Apperance slots on lower levels of season passes wouldnt be to appealing to work or spend money for
( I know, I would want that but its a 10 year service game, they do need to make money somehow )
What we saw in the Flight was a tiny snippet of the available coatings at launch, not to mention what’ll come after. Anything regarding usual player colors or black+color, color+black, anything like that is going to be in the game for sure. they’ll take every one of the basic starter colors we saw and brainstorm, if they haven’t already, an artist’s heaven of colors, shades, patterns, wear and tear, materials etc.
I’m in the lucky boat of having Watchdog so I can’t really relate, but I feel for you
It’s a huge dissapointment, no doubt about that. Just going to have to hope to be blessed with a coating you like. Preferably one that matches your customisation from previous games.
Color channels would’ve been a better way to do it definitely imo. Or even abstract it even more into selective colors, textures and patterns. But this current route is easier to put a price on and fill a battlepass with so this is what we get.
Doesn’t bother me anyway. I’m sure it won’t be long before I’ve unlocked a coating I really like. Besides, this way there will not only be far more colors to choose from, but you will be able to have up to 8 unique colors on at the same time that’s crazy. And you get patterns, alternative wear and tear, and the coating system is applied to everything in the game so you can use coatings on weapons, forge objects, and Bungie can use it to make a more artistically diverse game.

There is LITERALLY no better form of expression better than selecting my own colors. Please don’t try to feed me a canned b.s corporate response. There is no need to “fire out coatings fast” if they weren’t removing a pre existing system that worked. The fact is this system exists to sell cosmetics and no other reason.

Let’s just hope we’re not finding ourselves having to constantly scroll through thousands of different coatings to get what we want rather than being able to pick our desired primary and secondary colors.

Well which would you prefer? To be able to have every have the same pattern with many having the same colors and only getting 2-3 options for colors? Or would you prefer to have literally THOUSANDS of pattern options in which SURELY you will like one. Repetition is far less likely in Infinite’s platform. Sure, monetization is involved, but player expression gains a lot from it. The purpose of player expression is to show how you are different and what your style tastes are, not to have the exact same armor as tons of people but have a different color set.

I don’t know about you, but I would love having to scroll through all those coatings. Primary and secondary colors are just so limited.

This is a flight, the full spectrum of colours isn’t going to be available to you. This is very much a slice of the game and a taste of the customisation options available.
When the full game launches you’ll see more coatings available by default and more in challenges & the battlepass.
The coatings system will be better than the older primary/secondary in the long run. Coatings allow for a variety of textures, patterns & colours. You do have more depth with this system whilst also eliminating colours that basically no one used.
Whilst you may not have seen a coating you liked within the flight it doesn’t mean there won’t be one in the full game.
I actually loved it. Yes it is nice to get particular however those have a fault with quality paired with uniqueness. The Gundam looking one was pretty sick.
I was personally excited by the coatings we’ve seen so far. The primary coatings look great (most people in Halo: Reach chose primary + steel/white anyways) and the mixed coatings were… okay? But the fact that they weren’t just 2-color options locked to a certain skin makes me very excited. If they went with the system you propose, they’d quickly run out of ways to ‘remix’ the coatings to save time while filling up battlepass slots, which would probably mean they can’t justify the development time associated and the system would’ve never been implemented. This isn’t like For Honor’s very basic pattern system where a texture artist can churn out one texture in a workday and be done with the whole thing, the coatings are basically made from scratch, complete with color, texture, wear normals, sheen, and patterns. Any re-used assets have to be made first, which means we’ll probably see a lot of very unique coatings at first and then ‘remixed’ coatings down the line that combine the different pieces of older coatings.
It may suck having to wait for you ‘perfect’ armor coating down the line, and you may have to put up with having, say, a really cool sheen and a nice white base coat, but maybe the helmet isn’t your favorite color, but it will be worth it when you get a coating that REALLY speaks to you.
Also limiting the color system means people aren’t running around with bright orange and green spartans anymore and as a person distracted by bad taste, I’m glad the colors will be chosen by actual artist now. I’d rather have everyone a bit samey than having most people CHOOSE to look similar (almost everyone in Halo: Reach chose from the same 5 colors), and for a few people to be bright pink clown vomit.

The former, because it garuntees thousands of possible options. Whereas there’s no garuntee we’ll have thousands of coatings to choose from, especially not coatings that replace the basic primary/secondary combinations we had before, which I find much better looking than odd and/or lopsided ones like scorpion punch. Even the flight we just had showed that there’s going to be a good bit of overlap color-wise with the cadet/recruit versions being the same colors just different levels of wear.
Preferably I would rather see a combination of both systems or another one altogether. Being able to select patterns separate of colors, for instance. Or being able to put different coatings on different body parts.

Well I would like to point out that Infinite is going to be getting 4 seasons a year for TEN years. That’s 40 seasons along with Fracture events, limited time offers, event stuff, and who knows what. That is a very long time. And considering that coatings should be pretty easy to make I would predict that they can fire them out very fast. I personally don’t understand why so many people prefer just getting to choose 3 colors on top of one pattern that you can’t change. But that’s their opinion, not mine. Ideally, yes, being able to pick your colors ON TOP OF your coating would be the best of both worlds, but that would likely be rather taxing on the game compared to just having a simple coating.

The problem with this system is that we’re going to quickly have a lot of “filler” coatings that will be added just for the sake of adding coatings. I’d rather have a limited set of coatings with the ability to change primary and secondary color instead of having to browse through 1 000 different and most likely ugly coatings until I find one that suits me.
It will exactly be the same problem that Halo 5 has : half of the armors available ingame are the same armors with different patterns, which is quite lame when you think about it.

the problem is that they can only monetize a customizable coating once. They have to justify the system’s development time somehow, and they’re doing so by projecting a 10-year model where the more coatings they make, the less work they have to do later to make more.
If every coating was completely unique they’d either be too expensive on the development end to justify their inclusion, or too expensive on the consumer end to justify their purchase. Keep in mind a coating includes all of the work normally done to produce a texture. You can think of Halo: Reach as having a single customizable coating. Sheen: matte, wear: field-worn, pattern: the one seen in reach, colors: two of your choice.
The real question is, would you rather be able to choose from a large selection of coatings, or be stuck with the old system forever? There really is no other options.

I’d naturally prefer the old option as it’s the system I always knew. Still I’ll try and adapt to the coating system, I just hope most will be cool instead of looking absolutely “random” like, idk…the Coating you obtained in the flight throught the challenges which was light green and white. Having THIS as a reward felt a bit like a bummer and that’s the only thing I’m truly scared of : the choices of color combinations for the coatings
In halo 5 we had the tiered system for colors and crappy armor customization. If I am given a choice between H5 and infinite for its customization then it’s infinite all the way. The possible combinations involved are just amazing and we should embrace that and its coating system.
