We got not so much as even a tease of antagonists in the E3 2018 trailer. In the E3 '19 Discover Hope trailer, there’s a tease of losing to some threat, and then “them” coming back (from the Pilot’s perspective).
Who are they? More importantly, who is/are the antagonists in Infinite? The Discover Hope trailer leans toward Cortana being a friendly, or at the very least an uneasy ally. Does this imply that from 2558 to 2561 the Created are no longer the primary threats to the galaxy?
I’ll make a quick list below of potential large-scale threats (not exhaustive).
- Created (as last seen at the end of Halo 5: Guardians) - the Banished (as last seen in Halo Wars 2) - the Flood (as last seen in Halo Wars 2) - the Prometheans (as last seen in Halo 5: Guardians) - the Storm Covenant (if not abolished in Halo 5: Guardians) - the Covenant (if not abolished in Halo 3) - the InsurrectionistsLet me know your thoughts. What groups, or alliances of groups do you think we will face off against in Halo Infinite?
I think the Created will be the antagonist throughout the Campaign but will be defeated by the end.
Obviously I agree with created being antagonists in Infinite, though they could pretty much be coupled as one with promethean forces given they likely wont have ongoing hostilities, unless some AI return to help humanity in ongoing struggles.
As for the biological alien enemies, I keep the banished as likely option given they still have strength left as opposed to the real covenant that was destroyed in Halo 3 that resulted in some remains, known one being storm covenant though im surprised if there aren’t any other “fractions” of old covenant, biding their time and possibly led by some possible surviving prophet(s).
As for the flood, it could go either way. It could be deemed in the development process that there is already enough going on in the story with the created & whatnot. However, flood could bring some serious counterbalance to the promethean forces, even to the point where created would be forced to loosen their grip from holding the biological beings at bay and move their focus towards the flood.
Though if flood makes a return in infinite, I hope their appearance wont be rushed. They are the greatest threat in the Halo universe and should not be just a quick glimpse. Especially as the last FPS appearance was over a decade ago.
As for the insurrectionists, I doubt that, Halo traditionally hasn’t had human enemies & im personally fine with that since human enemies appear in so many games that they have become boring. Besides, there are already other humanoid enemies in Halo so I dont really see a reason to add them gameplay wise.
As for the lore, I dont think there is much to that either, at this time it’s once again a time for war that decides what will happen to every sentient being in the galaxy & I think insurrectionists are secondary plot point in that scale. They could be part of enemy roster in perhaps some ONI game but I wouldn’t be interested in having insurrections or other human enemies in Infinite.
Though they could appear in some intel (in cutscene or otherwise) where problems planetside are depicted a bit more than what the player sees. In addition to perhaps some information about riots resulting of famine caused by guardian EMP and general fall of the civilization, that sort of stuff.

I would assume that like with the grunts, the created will assimilate other former covenant species into their ranks. So I’m thinking
Created(with covenant species/prometheans)
Flood
Banished
I hope this will be a super-long game, so that we can end the chapter on the Created and evil Cortana and fight the flood. and some other enemy.
I’m guessing it’ll be the Created as the overarching enemy leaders, while former Covenant races like the Unggoy will serve as their organic armies. These organic armies would then be further augmented by Promethean forces. This would kinda remind me of the Covenant at it’s height, with Prophets as leaders and the rest fighting humanity on the battlefield.
Then I’m hoping that toward the middle or end of the game, the Flood enters the fray, taking advantage of a galaxy weakened by war.
I think it would be really cool if the banished made an appearance in the main line Halo title. Same with Red Team. It’s most likely the Created and cortana with the storm covenant though.
