Okay, so I’ve seen a few posts around here saying we should increase the skill gap, which, I’m not certain, means less skilled players do worse and more skilled players do better. Why?!?! I’m a self proclaimed mediocre player (which probably is me being nice to myself), and personally I would play a different game, like an older halo, elder scrolls/fallout, or maybe even shudders battlefield because I’m sucking more than normal. If I would do this, I’m sure others would to, thus decreasing the population and leaving skilled players, which would become normal players due to the lack of bad players, and noobs would suck at and not play the game. We all turn on the suck but it’s not a problem that the skill gap is large.
All that happens is the population gets better as a whole. Diamond at launch is probably a mid platinum now.
The skill gap is an issue nobody can agree on, the weak players will complain if it’s too large and they can’t get good enough to compete with the strong players. That imo is a pretty poor excuse to want a smaller skill gap, nobody is born good at Halo. The strong players want a large skill gap because then they can’t be defeated by weaker players which they should be able to beat but only lost because the game basically let them win. It’s like playing a game with a child, they are just going to cry when they lose to the adults and then they will be allowed to win despite the fact the the adults are far superior.

So, it’s like 2 groups whining about not being to git gud and about not being able to destroy less experienced people. Imma stay outta it.

Woah, woah, woah, woah!
Hang on…
Whats wrong with Battlefield? You act like it’s Call of Duty
Look, I know you can be doing bad, but that doesn’t mean you have to play CoD.
On a serious note-
Players who do bad get scrubbed out and placed with players who also do bad, is my understanding. The same works for players who do good.
I’m pretty decent when I play regularly (went to play some Fallout one day and never came back… Almost two months ago lol) but now I’m getting back into it and had to lower my sensitivity from an 8 to a 5 (6?). That’s how bad I was doing. But I refuse to quit. Perseverance runs through my blood, your blood too.
Moral of the story, never give up on your dreams or something. Probably. I don’t know. You decide

They could do what soccer does in the US and just say “you’re all winners”. Except replace winners with a cold “Tie! You’re all losers!”, similar to Team Fortress 2.
OP your worries have nothing to do with skill gap. What you want is a proper ranking system that will make sure you’re matched with players near your skill level…
The point of a skill gap is to distinguish the bad players from the good players.

Moral of the story, whenever giving advice don’t sound too sure of yourself, but sound sure enough to take credit if it works, but unsure enough to say you had nothing to do with it if it fails. That’s what I decide it is. Also, I never mentioned and will never mention playing CoD. And battlefield just isn’t my cup of tea, it’s a decent game though.

Ok… Then imma ask what a skill gap is. I just kinda did by saying I’m gonna.
Bad players don’t have to worry about the skill gap if ranking works. A high skill gap is important for competitive play.

I have to at least partially disagree with the statement ‘nobody is born good at halo’
some players definitely have a skill ceiling (which is not always just due to talent. Some players have far more time to invest than others do in order to ‘git gud’) and some players just have a natural knack for playing video games.
Can use myself for both examples. I could play a ton every day and I’m never gonna be good enough to play on a pro halo team. At the same time I’ve been playing for a long time and there will be kids every day that pick up an Xbox controller for the first time and are better than me in a couple days. Kids that can be pro in multiple games are a great example of this.
I am am regularly a gold rank right now. I am happy with that. If I played several hours a day I could grind higher and get better. But I don’t have the time to increase my current skill that much further. But if I was constantly getting whooped on in gold and became a regular in silver or bronze because the skill gap changed and my practice was no longer enough, I would consider switching games too. And I pretty much bought a 360 and an Xbox one exclusively for halo titles.

Skill gap is measured by the difference in performance between players of differing skills. To determine the skill gap, you need to look at the spread of player performance over time. A game with zero skill gap has everyone (on average) performing the same, regardless of what they do . . . such flipping coins or dice. As the skill gap increases, the difference in performance between players increases.

I get what you mean. I was just exgagerating to prove my point, what I really meant is that being good (At least decent) can come to everyone with practise. The ammount of people who are just better at ganes than others does not really change the skill gap to much.
If you want a smaller skill gap play mario kart or candyland. Idk, i dont wanna play a game I can win without being good at it.
casuals will play regardless of how they preform
Wider gap does not mean “bad players do worse and good players do better.” If skill-based matchmaking works as it should then players are grouped accordingly and should never know just how much better than them the really good players are, or how much worse than them the really bad players are.
My problem with wide skill gaps comes when I see another player do something that I’m simply not capable of doing under any circumstance. And then they do it a second time just to prove it wasn’t a fluke. I don’t mind the concept of their existence, but if I see them in matchmaking then my interest in that match is over whether they’re on my team or the enemy team. What they’re doing may be the pinnacle of practice and skill but what it looks like is cheating. I rely on sbmm to keep those players away from me. Because it so often fails I find myself wishing for a narrower skill gap, although better sbmm would be the real solution. But waiting for that is like waiting for unicorns to sing and dance.
