Any word on in game subtitles? My cousin is deaf and he isn’t really a halo fan but he is going to buy the halo 4 console(partially because he thinks it looks awesome and partially because he knows i most likely won’t be able to afford one myself but hey what’s family for right?) but i tried to have him play halo with me and was disappointed when i realized that there were no in game subtitles for reach so it was difficult trying to sit and explain everything yet for halo anniversary there were in game subtitles. So i ask. will there be subtitles in game for halo 4??
EDIT: I went back and played Halo: CEA and there are in-game subtitles for most of the campaign dialogue. Although some of the funnier dialogue is not subbed.
Hopefully. I’m not aware of any information released yet about subtitles, we probably won’t know until the game is released.

It’s great that you are looking out for him. I don’t know, most games these days do in fact have subtitles for all dialogue. I don’t know why they did not in Reach, but hopefully it is in 4.
Hopefully they’re in the game, because tho I’m not 100% deaf, I do find my self either playing with out sound on, or listening to music, so sometimes it’s nice to have subtitles so I can follow along with what’s going on.
By standard, I think you have to have subtitles. Right?
There has always been an option for them in other halo titles in the audio menu I believe. I don’t see why they would change it in h4 I know I use them.
Best to you my friend.
I’m also hoping for an option for full subtitles. Anything that increases the game’s accessibility is a win in my book.
Besides, even people with normal hearing can benefit from them. For example, Carter’s line at the beginning of Winter Contingency (after the cutscene) is completely unintelligible. It wasn’t until a full year after buying Reach that I learned what he said! (“Shoot down attempts are likely, so keep your distance.”)

IIRC those only affect cutscenes. NPC lines heard during gameplay aren’t usually subtitled, which is a problem because newer games convey more and more story information outside of cutscenes.

yes but upon playing reach they were only in cutscenes. but the reason i asked was because 90% of halo’s story is “in-game”. i really think he would like halo and i want him to really be able to experience it without having to stop every so often and try to explain everything cuz my sign language is still really rough.
> Oh yeah, sorry I forgot.
its cool most people dont know because they dont need the subtitles. heck. i only found out because i played reach with him. i had always assumed they were in game the whole time.

Yeah, I think the only games I have that have NPC lines subbed, are Half Life 2, and I think Deus Ex.
I hope it will be, it was definitely a nice feature in Gears of War.
I always enabled subtitles if available, and seldom buys games that don’t have them. I can hear fine and understand English, but with all the explosions, gunfights and stuff that usually goes on in a game it’s easy to miss out important parts of the story, or great oneliners for that matter (IWHBYD skull)…
I hope that they have subs for all cutscenes, preferably enabled as default, and I would love if they cared/managed to add subtitles for the conversations in game too.
The small things that can mean so much to the community…
I agree, there should be subtitles for all in-game voices. Sometimes I’m playing in the same room as somebody else who is playing a game or making noise, therefore I can’t hear what exactly is going on. Having subtitles at all times would make things a ton easier for me.
Not to mention that, like you stated, deaf people would also greatly benefit from this.
One of the few things I liked about CEA was this. It really adds to the immersion.
It took Halo 11 years to add this! Of course, I’d prefer it if all dialogue was shown and not just the scripted ones but that’d be asking a bit too much I guess.

Well, I fear so. I bet the community wouldn’t mind volunteering to add/sync the subs, but we’ll never get the permission. Maybe they have a kickstarter for “full subs in Halo 5”, I’ll gladly pay a few bucks to get it all in text, not only audio.
Wait I thought reach had subtitles?
Or are we talking about multiplayer here >_<.
Totally agree! I wear hearing -Yoink!- myself and always have subtitles on in games and movies so I don’t miss any dialogue.
I know Reach had Subtitles so I can’t see why Halo 4 wouldn’t.

i am talking about during gameplay in the campaign. halo anniversary had it but halo reach did not

why would it be too much to ask. like i said i am pretty sure it was during gameplay in halo anniversary. also it would be a simple “if/then” statement in the program if a certain dialogue played then certain subs would show up.
