With all the buffing of headshot weapons, good ol’ automatic weapons are more effective than dark thoughts and rude hand gestures now that there is less bloom.
While I’m not one who’s against REDUCED bloom, not ZERO bloom, this is severely impacting the balance of all weapons, proof being that in the Beta playlist people are more inclined to switch to the pistol than stay using the Assault Rifle.
Although most people seem to prefer the DMR over the Assault Rifle in terms of starting weapon, I find it heart-breaking that the weapon that has stuck to Halo for all its life (except in Halo 2, but the SMG could be considered it’s younger cousin) has been cast aside like an abandoned toy because a person cannot spam it from the other side of the map.
So please 343, I beg you, do something to Automatic Weapons that will make them as formidable as the very guns that seem to be taking over every game I’ve seen.
> Automatic weapons have never been used in Halo. This really isn’t any news.
So you’re telling me, that whenever you played the Campaign of ALL the Halo games, the Halo population didn’t use Automatic Weapons? They have never been used in levels such as “The Library”, or “The Maw”? You’re saying that to fight the extreme amounts of Flood in the levels, everyone switched to the Pistol or the other weapon?
You’re saying that in Multiplayer, the Automatic Weapons have never come up as Tools of Destruction? That they’ve never been used in game types such as Firefight or Invasion?
No offense mate, but your statement seems pretty far-fetched.
I’ll also point out that the icon of Halo, Master Chief, is more seen with an Assault Rifle than any other gun…
Which I’ll also point out. Your picture has Chief holding an Assault Rifle.

In campaign, sure. This is the multiplayer board, we are discussing MP. Automatic weapons have always been useless in the MP, ever since the Plasma Rifle lost its stun. Automatic weapons never come up as a tool of destruction for me, unless it is one of those odd days I feel like actively searching for a Spiker to use, even then, I would rather use a DMR.
Headshot and explosive weapons are much for efficient to use in Firefight, so I try to stay away from automatics. I don’t play Invasion, either.
Sure, it is an icon, but in multiplayer terms, it is useless. The CEA boxart even has Chief holding the Pistol. lol
My avatar has nothing to do with anything; Halo CE was my favorite Halo title.
They’re pretty effective in 85% considering there is now bleed-through melee, and the Needler is still deadly at the right range.
You can’t really complain about lack of automatic weapons ZB because that’s more of a specialty gametype that revolves around fewer weapons. It’s halfway to SWAT, really.
I found that automatic weapons are completely avoided in zero bloom gametypes, but in 85%, they seem to be used just as often as ever (save for when people realize just how potent the NR is in 85%).
Though I do understand the OP’s concern, I would have to see any weapon in Reach become useless.
> I don’t really use automatics. Though I would like to see the Repeater buffed. If not replace it with spikers or PRs.
I’d rather see the Repeater tweaked to work like a plasma weapon, so that it rips through shields faster than it damages health.
Currently, it does more damage to health than shields…if it were the other way around, it could prove to be a very useful support weapon.
I would never take the Spiker over the repeater, once you take down an enemy’s shield with the spiker…it’s far more productive to switch to another weapon for the kill. The spiker just takes too many shots to kill an unshielded opponent.
> I agree, whats the point in making argubly the most iconic weapon of the halo games a piece of Yoink!
we are talking online play… the most iconic weapon is the BR… no1 should choose an AR over a DmR. .even be4 this patch a pistol in close combat was better than an AR
Automatics have always been rarely used once you hit a certain level of play. The AR is easy to use, thats why its the starting weapon. Its user friendly for people picking up the game.
Automatic weapons are less useful in utility weapon starts, because they were not designed to be viable at a high competitve level.
Ar starts and utility weapons starts have been there to give the player choice in what playstyle he wants to play. In AR/SMG starts you can use the whole Sandbox and its about getting to the better weapons and taking advantage of that, in Utility weapon starts its a faster game pace with more emphasis on precision and movement/positioning skills as well as Teammwork.
Would it be better if ALL weapons were viable in AR starts as well as utility weapon starts at higher levels of competitve gameplay? Yes, but changing the automatics to be more viable on a competitve level would also effect how AR starts play out so it could be a bad thing to do that. Bungie obviously chose to give players two distinct and different playstyles, rather than try to make the whole Sandbox viable in competitve gameplay with utility weapon starts.
