I am so used to the older Halos movement that I have a hard time keeping pace with Infinite players. Same in Halo 5 - i was just struggling to keep up.
Does that have to do with age? lol
When I shoot players, I completely forget about my movement. I laser focus on landing shots versus making the other player miss. I tend to rush for close kills, but end up missing tons of them for premature melees. What is a better method for strafing?

It’s all practice and remembering to strafe but it’s a do as I say not as I do thing because the longer a session goes on for, the lazier I get and the more I do what you describe too
If you still play Halo 5, I made a practice map called BoxBot, try it in customs and go to the dark bit in the doorway near where you first spawn. Practice shooting that grunt in the face (has to be headshots to get the green flash and counter) while you dodge the boxes. It can help build muscle memory for strafing.
Definitely overall practice though, you can feel when you start strafing well and turn a few fights around.
Also, aim with your left stick too, by copying the other player’s strafe.

As a boomer gamer, too, I think strafing should compliment your aim. The older Halos were like this. I still think it’s like this in Infinite, although, those pro strafer strats can be very annoying, lol.
My Melee game sucks too, but I feel cause the game is buggy or designed for frustrating results.

You struggled to keep up in halo 5 because of the thruster pack. You struggle the same in halo infinite because the strafe speed is now raised due to the removal of the thruster pack. This is the unfortunate con to balancing Sprint. Sprint doesn’t belong in halo. That is the fix but no one want to admit it
Perhaps I will.
I aim with both sticks.

how does fast strafe balance sprint? i thiink it balances the slide
iinfinite doesnt have a good cloase range starting weapon so charging at people for a melee combo is a bad idea
Doing that off spawn is bad in this game.
And you do: the sidekick.
i always find spamming a trigger while aiming difficult so the sidekick is not very good at melee combos either, definitely not beginner friendly and suitable for social play.
