Improving my performance

I’ve never been great at halo, but recently I’ve been doing even worse especially in warzone where i would go like 6 kills and 25 deaths. Its espcially worse when im playing with a buddy whos really good a halo and I feel bad because most of the times im the cause of the loss in arena slayer. Ive been trying to decrease the amount of deaths i have but that mostly just entails me hiding and not contributing much to the team. Any hints or tips on how i could improve?

Not really, no. I don’t know how you play. I’m not especially good, but I know that the only advice one can give of use when they don’t know how you play is “keep at it.” I’m no pro, but here’s some advice without context:

If you die a lot, is it from wandering around? Do you sprint a lot? You shouldn’t sprint, 'cause that split instant where your gun has to rise into view before you can use it is a killer. Do you get shot from the sides/back a lot? Means you’re not paying attention to map layout, and wandering into the killzones; try being mindful of cover wherever you are.

Do you use power weapons much? If you feel like you shouldn’t because of skill, well… that ends up being backwards logic. You get a good score in Halo by using what you can take, and if you can take a rocket launcher, by golly you should take it. And use it! Don’t take a power weapon and think “if I really need it, then I use it” – you should use it soon as you can, and change your play to accommodate doing so in the most effective manner. The faster you can dead your enemies, the faster you put them on their heels and give yourself more room to move – which means you can find more guns more easily when your power weapon runs out! That’s the cycle, man. Take, kill, control, take, kill, control, take.

Again, I’m not a pro by any means. Hopefully this is useful.

Your not really giving us any real context, or how you play. but watch things from these people. I generally watch them for tips on halo,

I don’t really play multiplayer… But off the top of my head I would suggest you check your sensitivity and maybe see if you can make the sensitivity the same when your zoomed in and zoomed out. That will help with your muscle memory.

Also I would suggest you try to get your “3rd eye”. The 3rd eye is basically being able to “know” where your center cursor is without seeing it. If you use that one skull that takes away your HUD and everything (the blind skull) and can kill people with good accuracy and snap shooting… you have gained your 3rd eye.

I’ve found that I typically do better when I avoid sprinting. This makes it so that your weapon is ready to fire as soon as you see an enemy, rather than waiting for you to ready it after running (which takes more time than it seems.)

Arena & Warzone advice thread.

Follow your buddy in arena with a boltshot and a range weapon. Best slump busting weapon is the boltshot trust it (when I’m getting whipped it’s my go to) takes minimum skill and with a one direction strafe it’s tough to beat. Also don’t be afraid to play support man man man, every shot counts even if you hit the enemy once. If you get a shot just one in an enemy and your buddy gets in a shoot out he’ll have the upper hand. Far to often I see in platinum ranks teammates with clear line of site to enemy at distance not take a shot. In upper diamond and onyx the team with the most assists wins (my buddy and I had a 10 win streak from diamond 5 to onyx and every single match we out numbered the opponent in assists).
Know when you out skilled. Biggest tip I have to tell myself over and over when I’m being outgunned: don’t try to out gun them. Play like a noob get a close range weapon run the opposite way from action and flank/crouch walk, use cheesy tactics on better skilled opponents, but don’t hide that’ll never help you get better. With a friend? Set up a camp spot, bait and switch, one of you hit them with a plasma charge other take them out. Main thing is don’t try to go toe to toe with an opponent whose better than you.
Last thing, all weapons are good in halo 5 find what’s best for you. You don’t have to be the Wyatt Earp pistolier of halo to be good.

I’m in the same boat, thanks for the tips everyone.

^^ agreed. It’s hard to really give you tips if we haven’t seen how you play or go into detail on how you play. Saying “I’m bad” isn’t good enough cuz we don’t know what you’re bad at/with.

basic tips I could give tho would be watching the power ups+timer. Every two minutes they spawn after the most recent one was picked up.
Don’t go in 1v2+ situations unless you have a power weapon (even then I still wouldn’t as you don’t want to lose and then give them the weapon to use on you).
When one shot go passive and try to back off till shields Tehran, don’t get cocky when you’re one shot even if the other is one shot, it’s better (to me) to restart the engagement rather than taking a risk at a one shot opponent.
Try to support team mates anyway possible. I know people complain about kill stealing but I’ve always had the motto that sharing is caring and you get opponents out of the way faster by team shooting.

OP, from experience as a very slow learner, each of these points is something worth really taking a look at. Once I learned to slow down and control my sliver of the map as well as invert my conventional save-the-best-for-last power weapon usage, I started doing better (and having more fun!).

For a tangible mini-goal, I started by just learning the very best ways and spots to defend an armory and a garage. Then I’d watch where the enemy seemed to be rushing and spawn at that base hoping to catch a wave of opposing players for a bit of kill count increase.

OP, if you can put some clips together of how your average playstyle looks, that’d help a lot. Basic tips though:

  • Don’t rush! This is my biggest downfall. I sprint WAY too much.
  • Don’t get ahead of yourself. My second biggest downfall. Some times I’ll be so focused on trying to get somewhere, that when an enemy pops out in front of me, my aim goes all erratic and I just can’t seem to hit them.
  • Employ defensive tactics such as crouching, jumping, thrusting, and strafing.
  • Get behind cover and try to recover whenever possible before jumping back out into the open.

Find a good sense, and a good squad to run with on a consistent basis. Most important thing.

A big thing is staying alive… when you win a 1v1 of 1v2 encounter and you’re one-shot for example, chuck a nade or two at the nearest corner where enemy traffic will likely be a factor, or a common area where the enemy may push in…

This will either “zone” you away from the enemy, giving you time to regain health, or it will weaken an over-extending enemy (in this case) and bring them down to your level, where you can easily reverse the fight and turn the tables.

This strategy leads to a lot of multi-kills and is a crucial part of higher level Halo. It just takes some awareness and an understanding of the player/health dynamics of the game and using your tool set to force an outcome.
