First thing here: Halo 5 is a good game. It’s just missing a few things.
First is the radar being so limited doesn’t make it more fun. MLG players will love it but that accounts for maybe 5 percent of the population. Getting shot from behind and the side constantly because you don’t know where the threats are isn’t adding anything to the game. It takes away from that fun encounter you could have had instead where skill could have come into play. That 2 seconds of fun they talk about is bypassed. I highly doubt the beta had that many people complain about radar… where did that come from?
Strongholds is the worst gametype in halo. Territories, it’s old ancestor, was Halo 3’s worst gametype too. It’s no surprise that warzone feels so terrible. Had warzone been more like Reach’s invasion and mixed up strongholds with assault and ctf elements it would have been much better. I think if they made it one territory up for grabs instead of three I think we’d get more of an interesting game as well. I’ll end this comment with… when did anyone ever say OMG that strongholds game was AMAZING!? Why make the new flagship war zone game type 90 percent about that then? Territories taught us lots. Just nobody applies it anywhere. Even Control in Destiny is awful. Yet it’s the flagship playlist. …
I’m not sure why the last 2 Halo titles abandon Reach’s menu system in the lobbies, or its spartan customization. Play that game for 5 minutes in the lobby and it’s just so much more thought out. I fear the demands for 60 fps has led to people removing too many options gamers like myself cherish. I’d gladly take a worse fram rate if it meant I’d have Reach 2.0. Seriously that menu system the new dashboard is starting to steal from even… do ooooo it…
Lastly the art direction in recent Halos is odd. The new models don’t feel like Spartans or halo at all. I actually want to play as Buck more than Lock for this reason. Am I crazy here? Even if you compare a Halo Reach spartan to a Halo 5 one the Reach model looks like they’d win a fight too. They look all weathered, have massive amounts of extra ammo and blades to hurt you with. The new ones look really cool… just not like the Spartans we loved growing up. The forerunner architecture suffers from this approach as well. Halo 2 and 3 the forerunner artwork felt ancient. It felt secret. The new stuff I see in the 343 games feels built to render environments faster only. The result is that new toy feeling again. Again it looks amazing… just not like a halo game. Mind you 2 games into this trilogy now its hard to argue how it isn’t halo now. Can’t really fix it at this point. If the artist wants to make Spartans look like that then they can do so. Just don’t call it Halo.
People don’t like change and I may be one of them. I will applaud 343 for still making a sick game here but I am concerned for halos future long term. My friends list has all but moved on from it already whereas the old halo games would have seen them play it for thousands of hours over the 3 years it’d take to release the next game. Something is missing from it. I’d just maybe suggest the next game has every single feature ever halo game has ever had in it at launch. Then add the new stuff you are thinking of. Never subtract. Always add.
Most of what I mentioned though can be fixed immediately. I know I’m just one guy in a river of opinions but I hope something is heard.
I really do respect what you all do at 343 though and if I were sitting in your chair those negative comments would really bother me. Please keep going. I do want to see what’s next.
They need to stop copying all these other games with cards involved. I know it’s new formula to a “good” game. But, it is oversaturated and repetitive in games.
Agreed! MLG was great in the older Halo games. The newer games coming out in general are far too fast paced. There’s no strategy anymore. This is why BTB is so refreshing in Halo 5. You have that second to think. Even warzone is just crazy with the pace with the 12 v 12.
> MLG ??? What is that ?? Oh that company that no longer exists
Eugh.
Well…you’re not wrong…that’s the irritating part.

No, in fact you’re probably one of the sane ones. I could write a giant rant on the art style of recent Halo’s…but I really don’t feel like it at the moment.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you here. I loved Territories in Halo 2/3/Reach (was it still called territories in Reach? It rarely came up in any of those games). I played tons of Dominion in Halo 4 and loved every minute of it, and I love me a good game of strongholds in H5 whether it’s in Arena or BTB. Similarly, Control in Destiny is my favorite mode. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I would like to see some variation in Warzone though. Mixing in other objective types like Invasion did would be interesting. Or even just having more than one point to capture in Warzone Assault I think would make it a little more interesting. But that’s just me.
I will agree that the lobbies/customization in Reach was way better than 4 or 5 and I would love to see it’s design/layout return.
I’m going to have to admit, especially after Halo Reach…These Spartan models and armors look like toys. I have more than 110 armors and helmets (110 in both cat) and I maybe like 2 or 3. The ones that look more classical. BIG, BULKY, MENACING.
The Halo Reach Spartans were perfect…long live Emile’s skull helmet and Carter’s commando shoulders!

I think the game modes that could exist are amazing but all the companies keep reworking old ideas. Imagine a multi bomb symmetrical base layout? You could stragegize whether to put all the eggs in one basket or go with a 2 or 3 smaller squad effort to bomb the opponent. Even include an option to detonate at will to destroy enemy scorpions or other areas of power. Not just a 1 note pony where people play defence only like in prior Halos. Even take a warzone point approach where if the base isn’t bombed then kills count for a tie breaker. That will create an awesome senerio.
Ditch territories. It’s just boring. I won’t play warzone because of it now. That’s just me though. And I’m glad I’m not crazy about the art direction and design. As an artist myself it’d really hurt to be on the other end of these comments I’m making. But this is Halo and not something small time.
I find myself liking some of the armor in H5 a lot. Copperhead is my favorite Spartan armor in any Halo game yet, for example. 90 percent of them are sooooo bad.
I do enjoy some of the armor. I just really wish we could customize it better than it is. Most of the armor would be amazing in say Super Space Commando 2016 but it’s Halo and even some of my favorite options just don’t belong in the game. Viper is my favorite helmet currently.
Well if you consider how the chief used to be in halo they left things up to the player to basically imagine themself as the chief. Toss in a few cool one liners and that was it. I didn’t really mind that lack of development back then. Halo was strong enough everywhere else where I didn’t care my imagination was all I had there. I do see what you mean though.
I remember thinking in Halo 2 the same thing about playing as the Arbiter. I wanted to speed through those missions so I could play as ‘myself’ again. I think this is why Reach was so successful as well. They 100 percent embraced you being the hero and you had full control as to how you looked doing so. As soon as a mission feels like it’s working against a legacy you’ve been playing as, it almost should be cut in favor of a better idea.
Halo 5’s story is still passable. I think the main issue is Locks full dedication to following orders that makes the contrast between him and the chief so boring. I personally don’t want to hunt the chief down so why would I want to play as a character doing so? That was a main flaw right out of the idea board stage for this game. However I do see this as a story only half told and am giving them the benefit of the doubt here. Locks missions are still fun. My heart wasn’t in them though. ODST suffered from this when it made you play as other troopers as well. Fun… but I wanted to get to the juicer stuff.
It’s interesting I’m knocking this so much yet can say with confidence they are still SO close to having this be incredible again. A few artistic tweaks and keeping the radar in line with previous games and we are there.
Oh and for what it’s worth I played a custom game the other day with DMR as a starting weapon. It was by far the most fun I’ve had in Halo 5 to date. It put all the other modes to shame. Just a total blast. I recommend you all try one out if you can.
