Halo will finally be returning to PC with Halo Infinite. With the announcement of the new engine, it’s very exciting that we may be able to see some features on PC (like unlimited FPS) that otherwise weren’t possible for PC Halo (at least Halo 5: Forge). I think a number of these features (among others) are critical for the game’s success on PC.
Uncapped FPS
FOV Slider
Raw Input Option
The ability to change Keybinds
Graphical Options (quality, resolution, etc)
Hostable Dedicated Servers / Server Browser (Similar to Battlefield or Counter-Strike)
Classic playlist (no sprint, no armor abilities, no loadouts)
Dedicated Windows Game Launcher (similar to Steam, Battle.net, etc)
Optional Cross-platform play between PC and Xbox (to compete against games such as Fortnite)
I basically quit Halo after 4, so I’m really excited to see one of my favorite franchises return to PC and even more excited for the possibility to actually get to play a (potentially) classic Halo experience. We’re going on 8 years since the release of Reach, the last some what classic Halo experience (11 if you think Reach wasn’t actually a classic experience).
With that being said, I think it’s really important for these features to be included in the PC version. They’ve practically become a requirement in the PC market, so Halo Infinite really needs them to succeed on PC. This is especially true for the dedicated windows game launcher. I’ve read a lot of people don’t especially like the Windows Store and by having your own launcher you’ll be able to have a more professional, polished, and unified experience for your games on PC.
Feel free to list your own suggestions. I think it’s really important that we let 343 know what we want from this game.
Edit:
Something I wanted to further elaborate on was the dedicated servers. I edited this post to include “hostable dedicated servers.” I know that Halo has moved away from the Peer to Peer connection, where one player would be chosen to be a host, and instead 343 just have their own servers running (meaning they’re the host). It’s great because it eliminates host advantage and provides for a more stable connection, but this wasn’t really what I meant in my OP, so I wanted to further clarify.
What I really meant was I want people to be able to host their own servers, similar to how you can in games like Battlefield and Counter-Strike. I think this is really good for the game, as it allows for communities to be formed within the game and increases the game’s longevity (there’s still servers for the original Counter-Strike). Dedicated servers for hosting custom games and classic style gameplay could be done with this. I think being able to join a server and play with the same people you’ve played with before helps foster a community more than just going into MM and being matched with random people. By no means do I think this should replace matchmaking, I just think this would be a really good feature for Halo Infinite.
Here’s the thing. If there is going to be no cross-platform play then I agree suggestions 1-4 should be present. However, if cross-platform play is to exist we shouldn’t have these features as I believe they would provide an unfair advantage to PC players.
Suggestion 6, we already know both versions of the game will have dedicated servers. I’m pretty sure all Halo games from MCC going forward are said to have dedicated servers.
For a classic playlist, well, that’s more something that should be decided for the game as a whole.

That’s good to hear. I’ll edit my post to reflect that.

I’m pretty sure Fortnite allows suggestions 1-4 for cross-platform play (maybe not FOV since it’s third person). Of course they make it fair by only allowing console players to get matched with PC players when they’re playing in mixed lobbies (in other words they’re playing with their PC friends in a party). I don’t see why Halo couldn’t do the same being as popular as it is.

Yeah, for sure. Classic Halo was some of the most fun I’ve had playing games. If they allowed for people the option (for PC and Xbox), I think it would be immensely popular.

Well, Fortnite isn’t Halo. Halo has a uniquely hard to please competitive audience. I don’t feel as though a competitive console player would be happy that a PC player has a gigantic FOV, 200 FPS, custom key-binding advantage over him that he doesn’t have access to. Just my two cents.
As for classic gameplay for a long time now I’ve believed splitting classic and new gameplay has just proved to confuse new players and dwindle the population of the game as a whole. If they’re shooting for classic Halo (which I hope they are) they need to do it right and have the whole game uniform. I know some people enjoy the newer gameplay (particularly newer fans), but with the last two games it’s proven to be unsuccessful at drawing a larger crowd. Personally I think it’s time to at least give old Halo a shot.

I see where you’re coming from in terms of fairness. It’s just that console players are already at such a disadvantage with PC players using mice and keyboards. The mouse and keyboard simply allows people to have so much of an advantage over console players, that I don’t think adding things like raw input or unlimited FPS is going to affect that too much more. Especially when not allowing those things is going to affect PC players so negatively (I personally can’t stand lower FOV’s now that I’ve gotten used to PC. They almost give me headaches). With all that being said, I think it’s fine as long as console players are given the option of playing with PC players and vice versa and also allowing them to know when they’re playing against PC players (so they don’t think someone is cheating).
I agree with what you’re saying about classic gameplay. I don’t think we should split the playerbase, but I’d honestly rather them have that if they’re going to have the new modern gameplay so at least the community can decide. They could take one or the other out later on if they think one isn’t performing so well. That’s why I recommended a server browser, so that people could host classic gamemodes should they decide to scrap it or only allow it in customs.

The old controller vs mouse & keyboard argument has been going for a long time. I personally don’t believe a mouse grants you any better control, but that’s just me. Also, I feel like you’re being a little spoiled about the FOV thing. Headaches? Try going back to games made for RGB TV’s. XD
I think it’ll be fine either way; I’m just saying people will get mad.
Big agree, would also like to add that they should definitely release it on Steam and take advantage of steam friends lists. Not sure how that integration would work exactly, but they should really get it on the front page of steam when it releases. Even if it just simply opens up the Halo launcher like various Ubisoft titles do (it’s a pain in the -Yoink- compared to just launching from steam but I could understand the need to have xbox accounts). Ideally you could link your xbox account to your steam account for one-click launch and play and friends list integration.
It would be great if Halo Infinite could work on Windows 7.
A dedicated Launcher for Halo games is a great idea and they already have one, but it’s a little clunky - they should look to Blizzards version to see how it should work. Unobtrusive, light. Basically it should just be an easy way to log into your xbox account (and stay logged in) to have that friends list available. Some advertising for other Halo products and a simple way to keep the game updated. It should also be able to manage where you have the game installed (this is a big point) and have a game repair feature.
I’m definitely getting Halo Infinite on PC, but I’m going to be weird and play it with a controller, because I’ve always played halo with a controller. Cross play option would be real nice.
I don’t feel like I have an incentive to but an X1X or Scarlett - PC with a 1080 is already more than enough. Halo and Gears is the only reason I owned an Xbox really in the past.

Steam takes a cut of the sales for all their games, so I could see why Microsoft wouldn’t want to do that as cool as it would be. So, like you said, I think something like Blizzard’s launcher is the way is to go.

I’m definitely not going to be buying another console if it can be avoided. I have probably about four or five games for the Xbox One and they don’t get used. I wished more companies would be willing to branch out to PC, because honestly most console exclusives I just don’t bother playing.

Any competitive advantage from FoV, and higher framerates is minor. Key-bindings are purely a preference thing. Custom key-bindings providing an advantage isn’t really a thing, it’s solely a matter of preference, unless the default key bindings are absolutely terrible.
At the end of the day, on one hand you have a negligible competitive advantage that will get dwarfed by skill differences in everywhere but tournament conditions, where all players will probably be using the same equipment anyway. On the other hand, you have thousands of people to whom the lack of these options is an instant no-buy. They will then go and spread the fact that it’s a bad PC port, which in turn will hurt the spread of Halo on PC. So, what do we care more about, not having a minor competitive advantage, or making the game accessible for as many people as possible?
Besides, with there being talks about keyboard and mouse support on the Xbox, we could have a situation where options 3) and 4) are available to everyone who wants them. Option 2), on the other hand, has been talked about in the community for years, and should be in both versions of the game regardless. Option 1) is a bit of a pipe dream on console, but should be possible to implement with limited graphics options if there is enough will from the developers in cooperation with Microsoft.
I see this going 1 of two ways as far as a dedicated launcher for Halo.
Blizzard; Blizzard has been recently been taking the helm of many triple A companies PC client directory from Call of Duty to Destiny, It wouldnt be a huge shocker if Halo was up there too. Now the two titles i listed were from the publisher Activision this could be because of a partnership and Microsoft hates that word but theres a first for everything.
the Battle launcher is imo a perfect launcher. Its not too practical, its minimalistic, and straight the the point, you choose your game from the left and launch it you have all your friends in one active place and they all link with other games.
Microsoft Store.
Being as this is a Microsoft published title, Microsoft will most likely chose to launch one of their flagship applications on their own store. Now, when you install the game their could be a similar launcher to that of blizzards where we see a friends list as well as a launch the game button and a general settings tab etc but a launcher for a single game would seem somewhat impractical.
Whose to really say on it. I for one just cant wait to get my hands on it anyway. PC is gonna take Halo to new heights.

It’d be really nice if Microsoft would end up putting all of their PC games (Forza, Halo Wars 2, etc) on the same launcher. Having your games all in one place and being able to see your friends would seem to me to be a bit more appealing and less confusing to most people. I wouldn’t bet Microsoft would partner up with Blizzard/Activision on this. I only think Destiny 2 and Black Ops are coming to the Battle.net launcher because they’re both published by Activision, which is a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard.
As I understand it this game is a ways off, so it’s not all that unlikely that Microsoft might have a launcher in the works (they might even try to integrate it into the Xbox app). I guess we will have to just wait and see.

There’s a Halo launcher on PC, it has quite a lot if Halo content.

I didn’t actually know that. I suppose it’s likely they’ll put Halo Infinite on there, provided a more unified launcher for all Microsoft PC games isn’t made.
We also need a very advanced version of forge on the pc, I didn’t play much with the halo 5 one that came out but yeah, and im talking about fallout/ elder scrolls creation engine advanced. let us do whatever we want with the dang thing

It would definitely be cool if we could create maps that were on par with 343 or Bungie maps. I know games like Counter-Strike : Global Offensive are very open with map creators and Valve has actually added maps to the base game made by members of the community. I don’t know how Microsoft feels about doing this kinda of thing, given their stance on mods. However, I think allowing people to create maps (not just forge maps) really has to potential to increase community involvement and increase the longevity of the game (just look at CS:GO it’s 6 years old and is still one of the most popular games on Steam).

I really would love to see splitscreen even for the PC version. Splitscreen is honestly a huge part of Halo and I was very disappointed when they took it out in Halo 5. As for the difficulty to add, I don’t think it would be that big of a deal, especially since you can link multiple wireless controllers up to your PC using a special dongle made by Microsoft. Perhaps the thing they would have to worry about would be performance, but if you can do it on a console you can definitely do it on a PC.

I’m somewhat interested in the upcoming Nvidia BFGD and using it as a TV. Though it might not be possible with either the Slipspace engine or top-notch hardware, having four players, each with a 1080p 120fps “screen” would be quite impressive.
An even bigger pipe dream of mine is each player using a separate 4K 144Hz monitor.
Something I wanted to further elaborate on was the dedicated servers. I edited my original post to include “hostable dedicated servers.” I know that Halo has moved away from the Peer to Peer connection, where one player would be chosen to be a host, and instead 343 just have their own servers running (meaning they’re the host). I think being able to join a server and play with the same people you’ve played with before helps foster a community more than just going into MM and being matched with random people. By no means do I think this should replace matchmaking, I just think this would be a really good feature for Halo Infinite.
I’m going to edit my original post to include this.
