Implementing a 'Cover System' in Halo

Just curious about your thoughts…

I’m not saying if I’m for a ‘cover system’ or not. If I had to choose, I’d be mostly against as it could greatly disrupt flow and make Halo different from what has made it uniquely successful so far.

I just am asking the community to put their brainstorming thinking caps on and discuss the possibilities of how cover could ever be implemented into future Halo games. Maybe it’s not even drastic… it could be something very small. Maybe it’s a spin-off Halo game that takes cover to an extreme. Whatever you can imagine… share it.

Couple of examples of extremes could be…
— Tons of cover based gameplay —
Gears of War:
Just about the whole game is going in and out of cover. How would it work in first-person? Or maybe a third-person Halo could do it…

— Minimal cover based gameplay —
Battlefield:
There can be slight cover aspects where if you’re close to a wall or ledge, you can lean or peak around/over the cover without ever really going in an animated cover stance as in Gears.

With all the Halo games that could come out in the next couple decades… What cover based aspects could work in Halo if any? Just curious of what creative ideas could add to make gameplay more interesting, intense, and fun. Maybe it’s an added game mechanic or feature… or maybe it’s an entirely different Halo game and experience.

Share your thoughts and ideas.

I can duck behind a rock now, why would I want to press an extra button to do it.

Its a nice idea and it would give halo a new flavor,

However ive got a feeling that people would not like that change

The only way this could work is if Halo becomes a 3rd person shooter, and sacrifices a button. Controller space is limited, after all. If cover were to be implemented and we stay first person, even more buttons would be sacrificed, similar to the fashion Rainbow Six Siege is. Or we go to PC and this isn’t an issue anymore. Either way, cover just isn’t very Halo. It was originally an arena shooter, where speed and reflexes dominate, not carefully planning out attacks and taking potshots in a narrow hallway.

I dont think i would like it

No. Halo has always been an arena shooter dumbed down enough to work on a console with a controller, but that would be throwing away one of the few remaining ties to its progenitors.

After playing a bit of GTA in first person… a cover system would be awful. But if it were like Wolfenstein’s, it wouldn’t be that bad… well, not as bad as a system like GTA.

There’s no way I’d see it working no matter how well thought out it is. Halo is not a cover based shooter, it’s an arena/tactical fps. If people want cover, walk behind cover, or use another team mate as a meat shield like I do sometimes.

It could work if, say, you were playing a pre-Covenant war Halo game. Something during Trebuchete, where you’re a normal Marine rather than a Spartan.
Still, might make it seem too much like Battlefield. Not to mention cover’s only mildly useful to begin with considering the mobility of your enemy.

“But, why?”, is the question.

Why need a cover system when we have a crouch button?

I totally agree with everyone here so far. I don’t think a ‘cover system’ or functionality would do Halo any good but just was curious what others ideas or opinions would be.

Thanks for expressing your thoughts so far…
