Reading the post, I couldnt help but think about Halo 2s no barriers. You could run across the rooftops in New Mambasa to attack enemies from different angles, to get there you had to be good at parkour. In infinite, they want to have far less barriers than their previous titles, allowing for grapple shot to get you up cliffs or across canyons. But imagine if there was no grapple. You had to stack objects like Fusion Coils, crates or vehicles, or just be good at climbing (like how you can get anywhere in Forge World in reach by being a good climber) to get to high ledges. You had to jump gaps in Ghosts or Warthogs or fly a banshee to pass.
It’s all just in my mind really, grappleshot is there to keep the game flow going so players dont get annoyed that they have to spend time solving problems they may not care to spend time on. But I think I may just refuse to use Grappleshot for the personal challenge.
I think the grapple shot will change movement mechanics far more than a jet pack ever could in previous games, while you have to hit something solid with it to pull you where you want to go, the action is much faster compared to a jet pack. I feel like it will be fun to use but it doesn’t fit well with Halo games of the past, and is following a trend that has been present in other games lately. It’s going to be different and almost certainly controversial like sprint, armor abilities, and equipment have been in the past. There will be people who absolutely love it while others are saying this isn’t the halo I remember and not want it at all. At this point I have an open mind about it, and I also know that Halo Infinite is going to be vastly different than the previous games.

To be fair, most people’s problem with Equipment (which is what the Grapple shot it) wasn’t that it “wasn’t Halo”, it was that the equipment itself played more like a wild card than an actual tool. Most of the equipment in the game played more like a wildcard, creating situations that could go either way instead of tipping the scales in the user’s favor. The bubble shield is the classic example. Sure, at long range it can very clearly save you from getting killed. But on most maps? It just made the fight different, didn’t really give the user an advantage.
In MP, the Grapple Shot is treated like Equipment. You have to pick it up on the map, it will have a respawn timer, and it will likely have limited uses before it expires. It won’t impact the core gameplay any more than picking up a more powerful gun, or using a Mongoose/Banshee to cross the map faster or reach higher ground would.

The previous equipment was much more of a wild card but that was part of the design for them. They were made so that being able to successfully use equipment depended on the situation, how the players decided to use the equipment as well as how other players were able to respond to the equipment. With the grapple shot you gain enhanced mobility, can take power weapons from a distance, and hijack vehicles but I have yet to see how that is going to be balanced in the game. With previous equipment and armor abilities there almost always was some vulnerable aspect intentionally designed into the equipment that could be exploited to counteract the equipments impact.
At first i hated the idea of the grappleshot. I thought it wouldnt work with halo at all , but seeing how open and diverse the campaign locations are it will be a very helpful addition. Travelling through locations like mountains would take a while to get past without it. Im not sure how it will affect multiplayer but im sure it ill be tweaked enough so it will work.
