Im concerned about how we are going to be able to customize our armor as far as color goes. From what ive seen theres “cadet colors” which look like solid colors with no secondary colors, and armor coatings which are pre made color schemes with set primary and secondary colors that you have to buy or unlock. What im concerned about is that were not going to have a traditional priamry and secondary color system and that were only gonna have these pre made coatings. It would be cool to have a custom coating where you can have primary colors and secondary colors (and maybe tertiary colors too) and make the armor coatings special (like have them be shiny or have special patterns, that would give us the option for our own custom spartans and have the special coatings too.
While your concerns are justified and your custom coating idea is quite good actually, the sad reality is that they need stuff to sell to you since the multiplayer is F2P.
I agree that not being able to set your own coatings may be a problem, I do like the fact that some of the armor coatings offer colors in unique places. For example, my favorite during the tech preview was “Scorpion punch”. Your armor was matte black, except for your right arm, which was blood red. you couldn’t make that with normal primary and secondary color options.
I’m sure you color pallet will show up!

Forgot I had tweeted a photo of the coating https://twitter.com/XGCRadioactive/status/1421087372402470918/photo/1
I can almost guarantee you will find a coating you like. There will very likely be recolors of coatings because that’s super easy to do.
Like… white and blue scorpion punch. Can totally see something like that happening.

Agreed.
Though the 3 colour pallet gives you more individual choice on colour, the coating system opens the door to all sorts of pattern designs that would never have been possible with the old system.

if coatings allow for greatly expanded customization over bog standard primary and secondary color options, makes me wonder why the 2 systems can’t coexist

they cant co exitst as players could create variations of paid for skins. The argument of course would be to sell patterns or color pallets, which could work but then comes across as even more greedy giving how everything would need to be priced. How much would a palette be? What about a pattern? Why is it those prices etc.
Realistically, its simpler for them to consolidate it all to per coating instead of further breaking it down. Is it possible a secondary system gets added? Ya, but I find it unlikely as it could create more negative monetization perceptions then it needs too.

Pretty much this.
I don’t know enough about how they are coded, but I will offer a bit more.
Unless designed for a specific armour piece, patterns can look pretty janky when they don’t line up with the contours of the armour itself. So they would need manually adjust every pattern, for every armour piece.
If there are 100 chest armours, and 100 patterns, that’s 10,000 combos that they have to check and adjust. Then there’s the helmet, shoulder, arm and leg to check too, and if there are 100 of those too, then that’s 50,000 individual designs to check.
Then when a new season drops, all the new armours and patterns need to work with all the previous armours and patterns. If a season drops 10 patters and 10 armours sets (50 pieces), that’s 500 checks just to make sure they work, but a further
10,000 to make sure they work with all the launch armours and patterns. And that will only grow as each season add more.
With the coating system, I imagine they use a paint by numbers system. So when initially building an armour piece, sections of the geometry are tagged 1 through 7.
Then, when inputting colours to the coatings, the different shades get tagged 1 through 7 as well, and get applied to the tagged armour sections. This would result in a lot less checks, because they know the colours will line up.
If this is the case, I can see why they moved to a voting system.
we have known since last year we would only have pre-mades, it was like the first inside infinite post they did. I hate it but its what the larger community wants so im just wearing what ever it defaults me to and thats what ill wear till i can customize each color.

It’s a forum of survivorship bias where because only the people who are upset make post most of the time it seems like they are the majority when the bigger picture shows otherwise.
A good example is this new season of MCC you see alot of people (rightfully so IMO) upset about artstyle and thematic care but I bet once the season comes out the telemetry data 343 has will show that alot of players will equip stuff from that season.
so while i would love it if the community would want traditional or combined ways of color customization, based on how often i get told that color choice is antiquated and not needed anymore, and the fact that 343 doesnt even act like people are upset im forced to believe that the data they have that i cant see shows that I am in the minority.
