I'm leaving online shooters, and here's why.

I have been a fan and frequent player of Halo ever since I got my hands on Halo 3 in 2007. I preordered Halo: Reach, Halo: CE Anniversary and Halo 4 and enjoyed all of them. I have also played other online shooters like Battlefield 3 and Far Cry 3. I’d say I’m an average player in skill, and I’m ok with that. The problem I have with playing games online is the trash talking. Now, of course, I could mute all by default, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and give them a chance to communicate kindly. This does not happen. I can hardly remember a player with a microphone that DIDN’T insult me. But it’s not that I can’t take trash talk. I’ve done my fair share of trash talking in the past, but I try not to do that any more. One of the reasons I don’t use a microphone online is that I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings, and I’m less inclined to insult people when they can’t hear me.

I understand that trash talk comes with the territory of FPS games. What I can’t stand is that perhaps 99% of players I come across has NOTHING but bad things to say. Calling me idiot, insulting my skill level, calling me an assortment of homophobic terms, among others. And sure, I could mute them, but I’m still playing with them, and they still are just as bad regardless if I hear it or not. I’ve decided that I’m not going to play with bad people. I’ve already trashed my xbox and Halo 3, Reach, and 4. I want nothing to do with them anymore. I hope anyone that reads this is kind to others online and I hope people will learn to be considerate, but I know that this will never happen. There will always be bad people, even on video games that have no impact on their daily lives, but they will take it so seriously that they feel the need to insult people that don’t live up to their standards as if it’s a real life-and-death battle. All I have to say is, grow up people.

I understand what you mean…but you should not let bad apples ruin your online exp.

Not all of us are mean, for instance I can’t send rage messages no matter how upset I get as I do not want to hurt others feelings.

The loud minority will always be heard more than the silent majority. If you don’t like the people you get matched up with, send them a bad player review- You won’t be matched up with them that way.

You’re overreacting. Trashing your Xbox because of some online idiots is an impractical solution to something that could be a non-issue simply by muting, ignoring, or reporting. There are always gonna be idiots online, and you just let them beat you.

Not to mention that trash talk isn’t unique to just shooters. You’re gonna find it in any multiplayer game you play.

What Junky said. ^

I’m sorry that you feel this way but don’t expect to go into a different genre of gaming and hear rainbows and sunshine. Most of my friends are into fighting games and when I ask them how people act online they always tell me that they are rude and that they are sore losers. The best you can do is ignore them. It doesn’t help if you are letting them get to your head because they just won.

I think trash talking is in every competive video game bro.

Yeah, you’ll find it difficult to get away from trash talking.

I have more fun with cooperative and single player games anyway. I’ve thought a lot about my past experiences with Halo and most of the time I end up in a bad mood. I don’t want to play a game that consistently makes me angry. It goes beyond just the trash talk. It’s the mere fact that I’m forced to interact with horrible people, and whether or not I actually hear them does not matter; they are still there. I’d rather stay away from online games entirely if horrible people will be there to play them. I’m canceling my xbox live, then deleting my microsoft account. I’m not dealing with this crap any more.

That’s like saying you’ll never go outside anymore because you may be around unlikable people, whether they’ll actually do anything to you or not. That’s an impractical way to think. I can’t believe you’re letting trash talkers (who can be muted or ignored) bother you so much that you’ll stop going online altogether. Sorry to say, but that’s kind of pathetic.

Hmm, calling me pathetic for not liking to be insulted…

Stop.

OP, you have to look past all of the bad… it is just the way of it all…there is a lot of very nice people out there too.

You are letting them win in a sense if you quit and it is quite weak to just give up because of the language. If you don’t like listening to them just throw yourself into an Xbox Party Channel, You can even say before a match if you want to communicate (respectfully.) I’ll send a party invite. Another thing which Halo games have is that you can set it up so you can only hear your team speak in a match.
This is really helpful if you have friends on. Its what I do. In the end the -Yoink- talking is just like the story of the Russian Cosmonaut and the constant clicking/knocking sound her heard in his vessel while orbiting Earth. You choose to either hate it or you can choose to “fall in love” with it. If you learn to love it you can laugh at their frustration or vitriol that they spew out. In the end its just a game and to get worked up about it is just silly.

Nothing you’ve said has even remotely provided a good enough reason to drop the online experience. You’re not even overly sensitive if you’ve taken and dealt the trash talking as well. Don’t let them win and get you to rage quit. I think you are taking them seriously if you are quitting xbl altogether.

I’m surprised. Whenever I get online I almost never encounter bad players. As everyone else don’t give up Halo. Halo is an awesome game and no matter where you go even outside the gaming world there’s always going to be stupid jerks who are going to trash talk and upset you, but that’s something you’re just going to have to deal with. No matter what you do there’s always going to be bad people. It’s inevitable. Don’t give up Halo because there’s bad people because then you’re willing to give up other things. The only way to win the game is to keep playing until they surrender.

The thing is, there’s a never-ending supply of them because as the old ones move on new ones move in. IF, and that’s a bolded size 40 font IF, I get back into Halo, I’m starting fresh with a new Gamertag and profile and I’ll NEVER again play with randoms, only a full team since far too many people make judgements about me because of how “average” my stats are and won’t accept my friend requests. I’ll have to get friends from forums.

No, it’s because you let online idiots affect you so personally that you decided to miss out on a fun experience. The fact that there is an easy solution to this problem makes that even worse on your part.

I say ignore trash talkers or there is a mute button

Sorry dude, but you’re being too dramatic. Srsly? trash talkers? when someone talks like that, they motivate me to kick their -Yoink!- real good.

Telling them that I don’t understand English seems to do wonders…
Then humiliating them for stupidity is step two. That or reverse psychology.
Or you could just ignore them and move on.

Like others have said, ideally, you should just learn to cope with it. If you can’t (meaning you’ve tried and it simply doesn’t work), then I agree that removing that source of stress is healthy and a mature thing to do (like moving on from an ex that you repeatedly pursue attention from instead of trying to “be friends,” for example). However, what are you hoping to accomplish by posting this here? You can’t seriously believe that your post are going to make any ill-mannered people rethink their behavior. The best thing for you to do is to go in peace.
