I'm in the Federation of Fathers, and our Halo community is dying

Being comprised mostly of Dads (not entirely, we welcome Uncles and even Moms too) we are a bunch of old-school Halo fans. Most of us can trace our Halo roots all of the way back to CE. For the most part we are NOT seriously competitive (we of course have members who are), although we do enjoy semi-working together and winning some games.

Circle back to Summer of 2021. Half the year into the original Infinite Delay; we took it in stride. We were, after 5 1/2 years of slow…steady…growth finally wrapping up our Halo 5 Company commendations and earning that Achilles Helmet. Our “popularity” was at an all time high… members both here on Waypoint and in our Discord server were engaged and active. Playing Halo, Talking Halo, Watching Halo, Following Halo! We were SO EXCITED to ride this wave into Halo Infinite at the end of 2021!

And ride into Infinite we did! Our Discord channel activity was at fever pitch! Our “Halo Thursday” event was getting fuller than Xbox Party-chat allows! Many members continued over from Halo 5 and other FoF members who didn’t join into our H5 shenanigans joined up for the ‘fresh start’ with the new Halo game! It was the beginning of the end.

The initial warning sign was the ending of Spartan Companies. This is to say nothing of company challenges or commendations. Spartan Companies on Waypoint were a recruiting tool! When you’re a 30-50 year-old dad with a few minutes to spend in some Halo matches and want to play with some like-minded individuals what do you do? You hop onto the “Halo website” and find people like you. This is where most of our Halo community members came from… searching the Waypoint company descriptions for people that met our play-style. But for Infinite, Spartan Companies don’t exist! We are old… and busy… many of us don’t have hyper-active Instagram, Facebook, Twitter etc. for recruiting. We “thrived” on the passive recruiting of having our community posted in the place where everyone knows to go for Halo content: Waypoint! Since the end of Spartan Companies on Waypoint our new-dad-recruitment has been virtually zero. But that’s okay… we had TONS of Dads already playing regularly from our H5 days right?

Right! … Wrong. It started out that way; but the choices made for Infinite have killed our company’s enthusiasm. At first it was the BTB issues in December '21-January '22. We had a lot of people who wanted to play… and what mode was the best in Infinite to play with a large group? BTB of course! Only, we couldn’t play. This turned a lot of prospective new FoF-ers, who didn’t already know about the goodness working Halo has to offer, off. We never got them back.
The second issue were/are the challenges. The challenges as then (and now!) constituted do NOT encourage playing with others when everyone has different things to do and/or playlists to play. It’s easy to say “ignore them” but when you, as a father, have limited play-time and you’re in-game and the challenges are ticking down and giving XP to help move through the Battle Pass… it’s hard to simply ignore them. We know challenges are not going away and accept it. But, man! do we wish you could earn XP by playing the game-modes you want to play!
The third issue is the lack of campaign co-op. Enough said.
The fourth is Season 2’s featured event: Last Spartan Standing. In a game that currently has no co-op, BTB with only 4 maps, and only 1 Ranked playlist that can support more than two Spartans, 343 released a core Season-2 game mode that you HAVE to play by yourself. And it’s coming back for 6 weeks this season!

Our community members, our DADS; long time halo lovers, are abandoning Halo in droves. Before today our once thriving Halo Discord Channel hasn’t had real Halo conversation in almost 2 weeks (and that conversation was about Snip3downs damage-less rocket during the HCS LOL). We haven’t welcomed a new Halo member to our Discord since …scrolling… February!

The worst part is the negativity growing towards 343 and Microsoft that is making our Old Guys bitter. Our now small and loyal core is trying to hold things together; look for those rays of sunshine. Tell members that once played, that Halo is “not so bad” and to give it another chance. Sometimes it works for a day or week or two. But nobody is sticking around. There are other rounded-out, community-welcoming, fully-featured games to play and our playtime-limited members want to enjoy them WITH OTHER PEOPLE, WHILE ALSO WORKING THROUGH THE GAME’S REWARDS.

This is not a commentary on gameplay, sandbox, etc. We of course have opinions, concerns, hopes in those areas too. But above all we want to keep/grow our Halo community. We want to be able to have fun and PLAY TOGETHER. I’d think 343 would want that too… but their decisions say otherwise. Active communities build enthusiasm, add players to the game, make more money! I’d think this would be a no-brainer all the way around. A “win-win” as they say.

Please help us 343! Give us the tools we need to keep and grow The Federation (FoF)! Starting right here on the web’s home for Halo: Waypoint!

I know 343 has told us cool things are coming. But I don’t know if we’ll make it to November.

Great work waving the flag against the odds.

As an OG Halo fan. And a Dad. I’m empathising with your plight. I have a group of players, ranging 17yo through to mid-50’s, and I’m desperately trying to keep it together for our weekly Halo sessions. It’s getting harder and harder.

I can’t believe they didn’t continue Spartan Companies or something similar.

Hopefully we can find a buffer in Forge / customs coming out (hopefully) soon.

Don’t give up.

I feel your pain. I think the game just doesn’t feel like it was made for Halo veterans. It feels more like it was aimed at the Teen-rated “broader audience” and that was it. Familiar Halo 5 gameplay makes Infinite kind of refreshing for once but it only lasts for so long, especially since 343 removed or changed so many other aspects of the campaign and the multiplayer that made the game “Halo” in the first place.

I wish this wasn’t the case, but the only thing 343 is sure to deliver is disappointment, that is the sad truth. That’s just been the case since Halo 4 unfortunately. Back in Halo 4, I was one of the optimistic ones, “Don’t worry guys!” “This is their first shot at a Halo game!” blahblahblah. Then it repeated with MCC and Halo 5 and now Infinite. It’s very difficult to remain hopeful or optimistic for Halo anymore. And Microsoft doesn’t make it any easier, because they aren’t doing anything but sitting back and watching, why? Probably because 343 is making just enough money to where Microsoft could care less to step in lol

In about a year or so, Halo Infinite will have more content but I still don’t think it will ever live up to the hype that it once had. I think the content and Forge and Co-Op will come way too late. And the more mistakes 343 runs into, the longer and longer we will have to continue waiting… After 12 years of experiencing 343, I’m tired of waiting for them to finish their work all the time, it’s mostly a let down anyways.

If this was ANY OTHER franchise… I would have left years ago. But Halo is in my blood… it’s the first online shooter that got me hooked to online gaming. It will always have a special place to me. Halo (and 343) is so lucky they have such a dedicated fan base.

What 343/Microsoft did to Halo was uncalled for and 343 is not going to help you one bit, they are in this for themselves and that is why your members are dropping off as most of the player base has as well and will continue to drop off.

You are asking for help from a business that literally told us they don’t care. That this is how things are so either play or move on and from what you are saying people are moving on to better things.

343 probably saw that word “community” and moved on from this post.

halo infinite is fun

I miss having people to play with. It’s so lonely playing this game.

I’m seriously upset regarding this. Why oh why did they not keep the best features from previous games, opting to throw things out every game. It frustrates me to no end.

The featured event is not LSS. It’s Land Grab, which is a 4v4 gametype. So you can play that with friends. LSS is not going to be the 6-week featured event. Also both Land Grab and LSS are permanent playlists now that you can select any time, whether an even is active or not.

Unyshek is the community head.
I think by clicking on his profile, you can see how often he reads posts, number of posts, etc.
He was on today.

Sorry for the lengthy reply, especially to a monitor. I’m just hoping to clarify OP’s point.
Yeah, OP did mistake the timing for the fractures and narrative events.

However, what he means is that Season 2 is the “lone wolves” theme. The theme has so far 2 narrative events that tie into it. Both of which used Last Spartan Standing. Last Spartan Standing was made to coincide with the new season. Its like the whole season is built around playing alone, despite being in a multiplayer game that already feels lonely.
Most of us consider the fractures stuff its own thing. Kind of like a mini-season nestled with the current one. Whether or not you can play the fractures events with friends is beside the point. We’re still doing the lone wolves season, with the lone wolves loading screens, with the lone wolves cutscenes wearing the lone wolves Rahshasa core in Halo Multiplayer.

It doesn’t really matter if the modes are permanently playable nor that you actually can play most of the game with friends. It just feels like the game is telling us one thing, despite being made for another. It didn’t feel nice that the challenges funnel us away from friends and that there are no pre and post game lobbies for us to make new friends. That was bad enough. But the season’s theme is about being on your own. If I didn’t want to play with friends, I could just play campaign or load up a different game.
Its kind of like going to a steakhouse and ordering a BLT. Yeah, its on the menu and you don’t have to order a steak. And it can even be the best BLT ever, but you’re still in a steak house, surrounded by ads for steak while your waitperson recommends the steak. There is some perceived pressure to order steak even if the choice still remains on you.
I hope that clarified the perspective and I got OP’s point correct.

Yes, thank you, you nailed it exactly. I did confuse LSS with the Fractures. But there HAS been at least 2 times so far this season where LSS was the featured playlist making up 50% of the challenges plus the Ultimate. (Right?) “Forcing” us to play alone to complete the challenges.

And yes, the Season’s overall theme… ‘go it alone’. A bad time for that messaging considering our (and apparently other’s) community’s struggle to stay afloat.

Glad I helped.
If I was a father, I would ask to join. But I’m nowhere close to that. Halo Infinite is my GF and I’s usual game we play together. Maybe one day!

I’m not a dad, but in terms of Halo I’m an old school player. Can I join?

Sure! If you’re over 21. Go to xboxfathers.com and click the Discord link there to get started.

343 are lucky that Halo has always (well, for the most part) been a game about hope, which has guided the franchises fan-base for the past 21 years. Hope. It’s likely the only reason most of us are even here still holding on to this game/franchise. 343 really should respect that.

Oh yes - I feel you here man. This is a massive issue.

For a game that is designed to be multiplayer and because popular because of 4v4 and 8v8, I find it perplexing that LSS and “tatanka” are the focus.

Yep

Yep

Good luck man. As a father of 4 all 11 and below I really resonate with what you’re saying. I’m playing less and less nowadays but keep coming on this site because I’m finding it hard to let the game die.

I had a halo themed wedding, play with my wife, even got my eldest to play some halo.

The state of halo is embarrassing and the decisions made on this game are poor.

I had the 343 multiplayer designer tell me that the support for halo 5 was amazing. In reality it was releasing things not present at launch (like fileshare and firefight) and a load of maps for these modes. Well, as a player of 4v4 only, I didn’t feel this was the case. Warzone was rubbish, so a large potion of that game fell deaf on me, they need to just make this game what it always was - an arena shooter.

They of course have forge around the corner…but they won’t utilise the potential to create effective online maps for people to play. Worse still, they haven’t even allowed for basic progression and seem to be taking too long to do so.

343 have not done a great job managing this game - and it really isn’t rocket science. But then again - should I expect more from the company that took 5 years to fix MCC?

Nah

Land Grab is the Fracture event.

The Season event is Last Spartan Standing. That’s the game mode that was introduced with the new Rakshasa armor core that the entire Season 2 is based around. The Season 2 Battle Pass has the cosmetics for Rakshasa. The new map Breaker was introduced with the new game type LSS for Season 2. Season 2 is called Lone Wolves. It is designed to not be played with friends.
