Im giving 343 one last chance with Infinite

This is not meant to be a diss on 343, because I actually enjoyed the direction they took with halo 4 and most of 5. BUT if they misfire on Infinite’s launch it may be the last straw on my patience with the franchise (for me personally). Call me a Bungie fanboy or whatever you want, but I just feel like 343 hasn’t lived up to the standards that Bungie laid down all those years ago in terms of content at launch. In many ways it felt like they took bricks off of the foundation instead of building upon what was already there. For example, Halo 5 and MCC’s initial state really put a bad taste in my mouth that I have been slowly washing out for years. Yes, I understand that the games are up to standards now and I’m actually really appreciative that they didn’t leave MCC stuck in the mud. That really went a long way in giving people confidence that they won’t mess up Infinite.

But… then the demo reveal happened, and needless to say a good chunk of the community is worried about the state of development, with launch looming over the horizon. I am personally worried that they will sell us a $70 game that is devoid of forge, theater, and a good amount of multiplayer maps day one. I am worried that they will cater to the casual, Gamepass player and justify a half-baked launch off of the premise “well its on gamepass you don’t have to pay full price”. Of course this is all speculation, but my trepidation is just based off of 343’s past behavior.

Anyway, if Infinite disappoints on launch I think I will finally give up my “brand loyalty” to Xbox and Halo. I’ve stuck with the platform and franchise since pretty much the beginning. My first memories of Xbox was playing Sidewinder on CE against my friends. First memory of owning my first Xbox was playing the H2 campaign when it came out. My first memory of Xbox live was playing my first game of H3 FFA on Guardian (idk why that memory sticks out so fondly). For me, Xbox is Halo and Halo is Xbox. As a kid and a teenager I never had enough money to get more than one console, so I chose Xbox and Halo every time. Also, all of my friends were on XBL, but now thats not the case. Over time, I’ve just been running out of reasons to stick it out, especially now that I’m 27 and have the resources to buy another console. However, there is so much nostalgia and history with my time playing Halo and playing on Xbox, but if I’m burned again I think I’ll just finally rip the bandaid off. Xbox and Halo will always be a part of me, and that will never go away. I know it got a bit ranty at the end, I just hope 343 find their way again. Godspeed.

Have fun when they backpedal on their plan, make Halo 7, and it becomes your “last chance.”

I quit giving them chances after 2014’s MCC launch. Everything since is a comedy.

People who make excuses for 343 seem to forget when 343 publicly mocked them on the official Xbox channel:

MCC was my last chance too, that game legit caused half of my friends list to sell/ return their brand new Xbox ONEs and switch to PS4/PC. I had no plans on even buying H5 after trying and hating the Beta, but I got it on a whim when I saw it at target for around 10 bucks not even a year after launch. After that I’ve just stuck around to watch the train wreck that comes around every few years, that itself has quite a bit of entertainment value. I’m always willing to be pleasantly surprised but at this point I have less than zero expectations for 343 to ever release a good game.

I think based on their talk of Infinite being the “next 10 years of Halo”, perhaps I’m being overoptimistic but I’m hoping it is 343’s last Halo game. Imagine if in 10 years we get a Fable-style reboot of Halo from a proper studio? Like God of War, with the studio actually respecting what makes Halo Halo instead of trying to change everything for no reason? One can only dream…

Oof, even I forgot about that cringe vid. Pretty hilarious that they openly condescended their fanbase which mainly consisted of people in their early 20s to mid 40s at that time acting like they’re a bunch of small children while they’re simultaneously trying to sell them on micro-transactions. They might as well have said the ol’ Angry Joe line “Shut up, give me money”

I would say it feels good to have given up on them 6 years ago and watch everyone still give the “one last chance” talk while Microsoft and co. go laughing to the bank.

Seriously Aaron Greenberg said in 2015 - “Core Halo fans are going to buy the game no matter what” in response to Halo 5’s T rating. They see us as suckers.

But I can’t say it feels good because after seeing the E3 2018/9 Slipspace Demos I thought it was a return to form for Halo. The music and looks were there, I got H2A/H3 vibes and I saw all the “spiritual reboot” talk. I wanted to believe. But then I saw that demo and instantly saw this is just the same 343 they have always been. Upper management hasn’t changed at all since 343 started and that tells you everything you need to know. They just replace the lower downs every game they make to give people scraps of hope and reel them into buying the game.

Lol they did it again recently.

They have been sharing that cringe “Are you really a true Halo fan if you didn’t react XYZ?” to the Infinite demo tweet which is pure gaslighting. It’s on their main twitter (@Halo) and their recent Waypoint posts too.

The way things are shaping up, it may be the last one they get to make before Xbox does its best Atari Jaguar impersonation.

Feels like Halo Infinite is just gonna end up being Destiny 343.

> Feels like Halo Infinite is just gonna end up being Destiny 343.

That’s definitely the vibe I’m getting from it. The open-world style (not a fan of this for Halo, I have to be honest; linear games are just better for Halo’s kind of story, and that’s just the truth), the “10 year lifespan” talk and especially the rumoured budget. It feels like deja vu, and not in a good way.

If 343 Industries screw up Halo Infinite after five years, a new engine, and making some progress towards repairing their reputation, there’s no logical reason to assume they’ll get things right in the future. They’ve been making Halo titles since 2012, so they no longer have the excuse of being new to the franchise. If Halo Infinite is yet another 343 Industries Halo game, I buy it used for the Xbox One and go with the PlayStation 5 in this upcoming console generation.

For me, the Xbox360/PS3 was the best generation of games in terms of consoles. I loved Halo, COD and Destiny but I’m the first to stop when things get dirty. Stoped COD at BO2 because later games got advanced movement and too much paid DLC. The beginig of Destiny until you have to pay DLC to play with the rest of people. There was no point form me to get A Xbox One so I didn’t played Halo 5. Found Halo 4 ok but tone down form previous halo. Halo 5 feels so detached to what halo is but Halo Infinite gives me a good halo feeling. Even if it isn’t the greatest Halo it might be a good halo after 8+ years.

Na, i’ll realistically stop giving Xb and Halo most of my free time. I know for others anything that 343 does is “just a hiccup in the road”, but for me no. If they mess up the launch of a next gen console (which is a big deal), then there should never be a reason to trust them again.

Honestly, I’ll play infinite. It looks way more fun than halo 5. I’m not a fan of the replaced classic weapons, the graphics, the grapple hook, the enemy designs, etc… but I love the halo universe far to much to just put it down. I’ll probably play infinite till they stop supporting the game.

That line is taken out of context dude, it says they’ll buy the game “no matter what the rating is”. This was about people’s concern about the “T” rating. I just read the whole article, and basically Greenberg’s tone was optimism rather than being braggy/condescending. I agree with your later sentiments but call a spade a spade.

I’m in a weird spot with Halo, as I almost equally like the classic weapons as I do 343’s take on them. Same goes with movement systems, I’m kind of happy either way. Lets hope we are not let down.

Totally agree. I personally really enjoyed 4 so I only really felt burned with 5 and MCC. For me, I have a good amount of gamerscore so I don’t really want to forego that. I’ll most likely buy XSX to play my 3rd party games rather than just for halo. I’ll definitely hop on the PS5 train at some point.
