I'm frightened about Grifball

Grifball will and always be one of my three most favourite gametypes (SWAT, CTF) but I’m scared of how it might play with the new Spartan abilities like smart scope. For those who don’t know, when you zoom in with the energy sword it increases its range my 2.5x. How will the ball carrier ever get past the defence if they can get a guaranteed kill then how will any team progress. My only solution is to remove smart scope but I am not sure that will work for 100% of the time.
Any thoughts?

I’m sure or hope they will adjust the settings with another large update when they release Grifball to allow more options to limit or remove certain abilities. Then we can start making classic halo gametypes in custom by remove spartan abilities

Yeah… I’m not exactly sure how that will workout. Heck I’m hoping for the new generation of Griffball players that they bring back infinite clash from Halo 3. Basically in Halo 3 two sword wielders could clash all day without both Dying at a set number of clashes assuming they both time their swings correctly. Hopefully they bring that feature back. That and a couple other things made Reach Griffball nearly unplayable in my opinion.
It was also set up so that even if multiple sword wielder’s attack Griff one at a time while Griff’s shields are down, as long as Griff hits them with the Griffball at the same time they sword lunge him he’d stay alive but with no shields. This forced people to adapt their playstyle a bit so as to fake out the other player and get them to swing first.

As far as the new abilities go? Maybe make two Griffball variants. One with the new abilities and Griffball classic with all of that turned off and the features that I just mentioned.

I really hope they just change the settings to play like classic grifball. Anything resembling H4 Grifball will draw tears from me.

Good question OP, this is the exact kind of thing that makes the process of new gamemodes a long one.

Smart Scope increases the range of the sword? Lmao… Wow.

yea I was surprised when I found out about it from friends in my Spartan company

Those settings are already in it. Halo 5, IMO has the best custom game settings. Stuff like thruster cooldown, no thruster at all, shield effects, shield decay, slide distance/speed, thrust distance/speed, stabilizer time, emtpy reload speed, tactical reload speed, reload while sprinting, sprint resets shields, clamber speed, smart scope, the Spartan Abilities are easily the most customizable things in the entire experience. I had a blast messing with them. Even played a couple of classic Halo matches with all Spartan abilities disabled, including Smart Scope.

I’m planning on using them for a “What Halo 5: ODST” would be like, nerfing the speed, sprint speed, removing shields, disabling most of the Spartan Abilities (except for what I think post-war ODSTs would have, such as clamber), etc.
This.

Yeah while setting up custom games you can change everything, even down to how fast shields recharge, to even allowing players to reload while sprinting, or the ability to adjust damage of certain weapons, so it wouldn’t be that hard to set up a classic-ish game of grifball, the only difference would still having Spartan abilities, but you could lower the damage they do as to balance, or leave them to cause players to have to adjust and build new strategies.

Indeed. In either case, I am at least a little bit interested in Halo 5’s style of Grifball. Grifball is a very movement-based gamemode, and the Spartan Abilities practically pour movement into the game.

I miss when everyone would mess around in grifball during reach instead of trying to score.

They could set the secondary starting weapon to nothing.
Problem solved.

OP has valid points

How is that “problem solved”?

Having both the sword and grav hammer is integral to grifball. Dear god I hope you never become a game dev.

I am pretty sure it will be bad, just look at BtB or Arena/MLG

343i changes everything that was bad or good in the old Halo games.

If you haven’t seen it yet, they released a community update all about ball gamemodes and other things like matchmaking fixes and the blue team color change. Here’s a link

I hope whatever they do it is actually a good mode.

I’m pretty curious to see how Halo 5’s Grifball will turn out with all the new movement mechanics. Maybe stuff like smart scope and ground pound will add new layers of skill and fun.

You think an increased distance of the thruster on the ball carrier would even it out?

343 Has said they consulted with top Grifball players when designing the mode, so I think it’s more likely to be an additional twist to the game than anything profound. Like how in H4 we got ball passing. Worst case scenario, since Grifball is built using the new ball-games gametype, you should be able to make a custom version of Grifball that turns off spartan abilities, alters speed, melee distance, carrier properties etc.

Let’s not forget that 343 has responded to community feedback a lot recently with the removal of Breakout from Team Arena and a lot of other tweaks. So if people really hate the new version of Grifball, I’m confident they’d respond accordingly, or at the very least offer a “Grifball Classic” mode in the playlist rotation.

I totally get where your skepticism is coming from, but every update that comes by makes me more confident that Halo is in the right hands with 343. (even if they can be a bit slow to react at times)
