I'm doing 4K120hz over HDMI 2.0 how is this possible?

I have an HDMI 2.1 cable going from my MSI GTX1080ti GAMING X to my Sony 50" X85K in its HDMI 4 port set to Enhanced Format. I’m getting 4K at 120hz which is gorgeous and feels amazing but I’m confused, how is this happening when my graphics card is only HDMI 2.0?

4K@120 is working for other games too not just MCC.

P.S. Please further improve draw distances and bring back split screen.

HDMI 2.1 is needed for 4K120
The GTX 1080 Ti does not support that
DisplayPort 2.0 can do it though

The GTX 1080 Ti is HDMI 2.0b and yeah I thought it couldn’t do 4K120 over HDMI, only on DP.

But as I said I’m getting 4K120 over HDMI. Not “I think I am it looks like I am.” - I am. But it’s on 8bit(SDR) a caveat I don’t really care about tbh at least not for old games.

I may purchase a DP 1.4 to HDMI adapter and see if that then allows me to also use HDR at the same time.
