I'm bad at Halo 5, Please help

As the title says, I am absolute dog-awful trash at Halo 5. I haven’t been on the game for long, but I’m concerned that I might not be able to get good at it.

For some background, I was an absolute sweat on Reach, and I also flex on Halo: Online/3. Its just frustrating that I can go from 20+ kills and a 2.0+ KD on average to being an absolute badkid.

What’s going wrong?

-I can’t seem to aim for my life. I can usually get people one shot, but I just can’t finish. Magnum, br, doesn’t matter. I’m constantly getting smacked by plats. Highly demoralizing.

-Can’t seem to strafe either. The strafes that I use from memory are useless on 5. I feel like no matter what I do the enemy always glues his magnum onto my head. It doesn’t help that I’m terrible with thruster timing, so I’m not getting as much of an edge as my opponents do.

-Movement is another weak point. I can’t thrust slide or do jumps well. I’m regularly missing melees too. Other players practically dance around me while I’m trying to register what’s going on. It makes me feel like I’m a special education student with a double digit IQ.

So I have an idea of what’s wrong, but what can I realistically do about it? I’m open to any and all suggestions. I realize I’ll never be the team carrier I used to be on the older games, but if I’m doomed to be a negative KD butter boy who has to hide behind his teammates because he can’t even out strafe a plat…I’m not sure I’m worthy to play Halo anymore

A lot of the players I know, including myself, were hot doggie doodoo when we started playing. I learned by watching YouTube tutorials on aiming, strafing, sensitivity, etc. Do you have any friends to play with? I’d suggest grabbing a friend and jumping into an octagon. Mess with your sensitivity, controller settings, practice your strafe by mixing side-to-side movements, crouching, and jumping, and hone in your magnum shots by prioritizing shot placement over shot volume. Shoot slower and pace your shots so that you can actually hit the target, then as your aim improves then you can speed up. Play octagons until your hands cramp. It’ll take time to improve, but you’ll begin to notice results within a week. Good luck!

It’s honestly practice man. Halo 5 has the hardest skill cap for any Halo game. It takes patience and practice to learn how Halo 5 plays different than the other Halo games. There are similarities but just the same amount of differences. If you want someone to go over a few pointers with you or just play in general feel free to add me

P.S I had to get use to a completely new strafe In this game

Agree, in other Halo games the diference between a “noob” with a “pro” is not much, one noob can compete against a pro, but in Halo 5 the diference could be abysmal between a noob against a pro, because in Halo 5 has a lot of skills and is the faster Halo.

Then you need to practice in all the playlists also in customs changing you controller configuration.

I find that when evenly matched, you really need to stick together with your team. This wasn’t something I found in previous Halo titles to win (and maybe I was just a bad teammate), but here it really impacts the outcome of a match if you stick together.

Also the Magnum is your friend. There was a big weapon balance patch so be cautious when picking up the BR. It’s not exactly ol’ reliable anymore.

I’m sorry, but unless this is hyperbole, a noob isn’t gonna be anywhere near a pro’s overall skill level in any Halo. Now the skill gap might be bigger and smaller in different Halo’s, but they’re not at a level where I would think a noob could be close to a pro in any of them. In H5, I’d consider the movement to have a large skill gap, but the shooting skill gap outside of the magnum to be a lot smaller.

For the OP, you just have to keep practicing since it’s not a game that you’re going to be an expert at overnight. H5’s skill matching is also different from past games like Reach so you’re not gonna be able to stomp on people as easily since most of the games will match you with people around your skill level.

To be fair, you have less than 9 hours game play.
you don’t know the maps. you have only played the campaign on Normal.
your general knowledge of the game which includes weapons, maps, spawns, etc. is lacking due to your lack of exposure. unless this is a second account with a few days game play behind your back, you cant expect to lean on your knowledge of any other game to come into H5 (or any game) and slap people around.

You are a Plat 6 off the rip… you are not too bad if that is your starting point.
as for jumps and movement mechanics, hop into custom games, choose an arena map, watch Shyway explain the multiple variations of jumps and practice…

If you started 3yrs ago, no doubt you’d be Onyx or something destroying peoples morale.

Aiming is a little different in Halo 5, so it might be worth looking into your dead ones and acceleration settings. There are some good videos on YouTube on what does what that will hopefully help you find the setting that works best for you.

As other have said as well, give it a little more time. Try some of the maps in customs and learn the jumps too. Can make all the difference in matchmaking

What’s your usual playstyle? Are you aggressive or defensive? Do you like fighting up close or from a safe distance?

@Stromyy
That’s what I’ve been trying to do. I guess it’s sound advice, I just haven’t seen the results.

@Prophet Onyx
Thanks, I’m starting to get the idea that this game is going to be a painful challenge to overcome.

@JB Linken
I try, but honestly I hate being relegated to support. It seems like 8 out of 10 times I get into a 1v1 situation I’m always missing that headshot that any other player would hit no problem. I’m making decent plays, but it doesn’t matter if I can’t get the kill. When I’m with a fire team I’m always just getting people oneshot or giving callouts. I either hang back and don’t get kills, or I try to play aggressive and die because my aim is trash. Either way I’m not contributing to the team.

@Lukepowa
I’m aware of that. What’s grinding me down is that I’m consistently getting out aimed by people who the game considers low level. If I can’t even get a headshot on the average casual how am I ever going to stand a chance against an actual sweat?

@RoastedGoat199
Yeah this is an alt. I didn’t want my main to have atrocious stats while I try to learn this game. I know I need to learn the maps and jumps, but my most pressing issue is aim. Sometimes I make good plays, but I never seem to finish the oneshots.

I do watch ShyGuy, he’s the only reason I’m plat at all.

@HaXoR73

I usually try to play aggressive, but with a team I hang back. when I’m up close I can get some serious work done, but I never seem to connect the final headshots. Its not unusual for me to have more assists than anything. When with my friends I try not to give the enemy kills, so I hang back and support. Good for the team, but it doesn’t give much opportunity to learn. I definitely won’t be gaining any HCS level knowledge by hiding behind my buddies.

Hey man. I was not doing as well as I wanted myself on H5. My overall kda was below .2% in slayer game types a few months ago and I just couldn’t seem to make any headway in improving it. I ended up watching several YouTube videos to see if there was anything I could do to improve my overall game play. Videos uploaded by Luke The Notable were a GREAT help for me and I would very much recommend them to you. My kda has climbed to .7% now and I am playing much more efficiently. (Higher kills per game, increased head shot medals, and more frequent perfect kills) I would like to recommend 2 specific videos to help get you started. links below

And practice really does makes better. Best of luck to ya.

I have the same problem too.

Octagon as many people as you can in Customs to work on your aim and movement. Eventually you’ll start to feel a little more comfortable with the controls even if you’re getting destroyed by more talented players. Then go into matchmaking and grind the Quick Play playlist to get the three maps within with the Slayer mode pretty well figured out. Then try ranked Slayer to expand your knowledge of available maps. After that, transition over to Team Arena to focus on the truly sweaty game-play.

Something I had to learn was to slow down. I was trying to fire as fast as I could, as fast as my opponent was and I was missing a lot.

It’s hard but just focus on making the shots hit at first, and as you improve you will be able to fire faster and faster.

Great advice, but lemme just say that in retrospect, it may be alright to just jump into Team Arena before even grinding Quick Play because I used to grind Quick Play and it caused two things: I became “scared” of Team Arena because I was used to casual gameplay, and I was overexposed to Coli/Plaza/Truth to the point where I still get BTFO’d when I play the Rig or Empire. Quick Play is just too different with the radar differences and sp.abilities.

I guess it depends on whether he wants to restrict his time with the game to only Team Arena.

I spread my time across multiple experiences and if he has any interest in that then I think the method I laid out is fairly decent. But, as you say if he’s focused on only really playing Team Arena then by all means jump from the Octagon to that particular playlist.
