I’m back after being banned for talking trash about the series I grew up with. Note: I was trolling I love all Halo’s even if they say Tyrone The Bear is dumb I’ll still support 343i. To the topic on Agent Locke, why do I see alot of hate on him for no reason. I get it we love our favorite spartan but think of it, each spartan generation has it best, Spartan I Johnson, SII John-117, SIII Noble 6, and upcoming best Agent Locke and on top of that we got the two most badasses elites on Halo, Arbiter and Shipmaster. If this doesn’t help you to like Agent Locke post a comment on why you hate Locke.
Haven’t noticed any hate. We barely know anything about him. First judgments should be reserved for Nightfall.
On the “Who’s Agent Locke?” topic this guy is bashing him and the youtube section.
There seems to be a very misguided notion that Master Chief IS Halo. And that’s just plain wrong. Master Chief is one of many characters in the Halo Universe, a pivotal one at that who happens to be the focus of numbered Halo games. People are up in arms across the internet because it was stated that Agent Locke was a primary character in Halo 5. People misread that as “Master Chief is taking a backseat and Locke is the hero.” Thus, because of said aforementioned misguided notion, people got pissed. They can’t stomach the thought that Master Chief could be replaced. If they want Halo to continue, then those fans better get over real quick, because Master Chief will eventually be replaced by another character. It could be Locke, it could Thorne, or it could be a character we have yet to meet. But it will happen at some point down the road.
Back to the topic at hand though, yeah, a lot of people seem to dislike Locke for some reason. They may not be particularly vocal here, but on other websites they are. So to clarify for those who need it:
-
Halo 5: Guardians has TWO protagonist, same as Halo 2.
-
Agent Jameson Locke is the second protagonist of Halo 5: Guardians and is equal to the Master Chief in terms of standing in the Halo universe. Both of them will be equally critical to the future of Halo’s story whether you like it or not.

Chief is the face of Halo, it would be like not having Samus be the star of Metroid, or not playing Link in LoZ, be like replacing Eddie in Iron Maiden. It’s ok to introduce new characters into the univers like Halo 2 did but it would be stupid to complete replace Chief when he is the face, the icon, the mascot of Halo.
> There seems to be a very misguided notion that Master Chief IS Halo. And that’s just plain wrong.
Well you can’t just go and say something like this as if it’s objective fact. Each player relates to the game and the series in their own way. Some people liked Sgt. Johnson more than Chief. Some people like the Arbiter more than any character. Some people have the Flood as their focal point in the game, while others hate the Flood in every way possible.
Personally, I relate Halo directly to the Chief. He is the center of the entire plot both in the books and in the games, and he represents the perfect combination of skill and luck, plainness and mystery that many of us have grown attached to. Obviously he will die or retire one day, but I’m 99% certain that when he does, the series will either end or go completely downhill from there.
With that said, I welcome Agent Locke into the Halo universe. I think it will be a great turn of events adding a new and mysterious character to the plot. Just like the Arbiter, there is great potential for a large portion of the fan base to grow attached to Locke. We just have to be patient and see what role he plays.
What’s up with this notion that the franchise dies with Chief? It’s already been proven that enthralling scenarios and likeable characters can exist without him being central to them.
> What’s up with this notion that the franchise dies with Chief? It’s already been proven that enthralling scenarios and likeable characters can exist without him being central to them.
One of my favorite Halo games is ODST and Chief wasn’t in that game. I agree with you. We can have good Halo games even if Chief isn’t the star of the show.

Or like not having Luke Skywalker as the main character in the new Star Wars film, and having it instead focus on his children, or having Terry McGinnis as the new Batman, instead of sticking to the same old Bruce Wayne, who is bound to become old and senile eventually, or like killing off Liu Kang in the Mortal Kombat series. Noticing a trend? Every franchise’s main character has a successor, eventually. Halo is no exception.
> Personally, I relate Halo directly to the Chief. He is the center of the entire plot both in the books and in the games
That is factually incorrect. He wasn’t the centre of attention in Ghosts of Onyx, The Cole Protocol, Contact Harvest, any of the Kilo-5 novels (for obvious reasons), or The Forerunner saga (again, for obvious reasons). Thats just about every book except for the first two Eric Nylund novels. Heck, he wasn’t even the centre of attention in the very first Halo live action feature, FUD, either. Sure, he did make an appearance, albeit a brief one for a 5 part series.
Chief is only the face of Halo in the GAMES! And thats only because Bungie were too lazy to properly develop other characters, and implement the expanded fiction, where the story could have benefitted. They started a good trend with Halo 2, but threw it all away in favour of sticking to the faceless, nameless (until Halo 3) space marine with a limited moral conscience.
> I’m 99% certain that when he does, the series will either end or go completely downhill from there.
Thats a very narrow-minded view. The only people who think this are those who can’t get passed the idea of their beloved hero being laid to rest. I, for one was entirely unaffected by the fact that Chief was no longer the main character for two games (Reach, ODST). I hated Reach’s plot, of course, but for entirely different reasons, such as being unable to make sense of said plot, due to the amount of retcons, unless you read the data drops. I did enjoy ODST though, which is concrete proof that successful stories can be written without Chief being slapped onto the front page, all of the time.

People need to listen to this guy he’s right!Let them kill of chief or give him a less of a role in halo.Lets see how big the halo community would be .Trust me thier is alot less of you fans out thier that think halo would be fine without him being the face of halo.Almost everyone I know who played halo think chief is halo its just how some fans are and I am one of them too.Im not afraid to say that I don’t like this direction for halo 5 .I dont have to like Locke at first either. It’s up to 343 to prove me wrong .Eveyone remember how much grief bungie got when they 1st introduced the Arbiter? But I have the right to not like a character at 1st just like fans who break out in praise for this new character. He could be like Sarah Palmer and thats not good.I’m skeptical of 343’s intention with this new character. You want new heros give the game a different title just like in call of duty break up the franchise into parts.Thier are two groups of halo fans pre halo reach and post halo reach just like every other franchise has Star Trek for example has fans for the original and fans for next generation. I will also say I never have been banned here I try to show respect for 343 and fans with different opinions than I do.I would like the same respect too and if I wrong I have no problem admitting it.But with all do respect I feel replacing the main hero is bad halo isn’t Batman Beyond.
> Let them kill of chief or give him a less of a role in halo.Lets see how big the halo community would be.
We did just fine without Master Chief in ODST, and Buck and his squad have become fan favorites. As long as the storytelling remains top-notch and there are other interesting/likeable characters, Chief’s absence won’t be a deal breaker to the community…which has already been proven. I would hope that you and others aren’t so narrow-minded as to quit on the franchise if Chief dies or gets a lesser role, especially if it is handled well by 343.
> I dont have to like Locke at first either. It’s up to 343 to prove me wrong.
Be skeptical all you want, but don’t make the blatantly false claim that Halo is certain to die with Chief.
> Eveyone remember how much grief bungie got when they 1st introduced the Arbiter?

Okay, how does this matter story-wise?
> But with all do respect I feel replacing the main hero is bad halo isn’t Batman Beyond.
Batman Beyond received critical acclaim. There’s no reason to believe that future Halo titles without Chief couldn’t do the same. And yet, you seem to think so for arbitrary reasons.

YOU HAVE YOUR OPINION AND I RESPECT IT AND I HAVE MINE!!!
> YOU HAVE YOUR OPINION AND I RESPECT IT AND I HAVE MINE!!!
And that’s great. Though I’d respect your opinion a lot more if you explained the reasoning behind it. Why do you feel that Chief always needs be central to the stories told? Because he’s an icon? Because he’s likeable? Is the notion that the series is doomed if he’s gone simply a gut feeling on your part?
I want MASTER CHEIF not some Johnny come lately (ironic expression award).

Star Wars is more about the Skywalker Legacy more than Luke as the main character, Batman Beyond hasn’t been the only time Bruce has been replaced. -Yoink- Grayson took over when Bruce “died” but he became the Batman once again he returned. Those stories while good only last for so long since Bruce Wayne IS Batman. Like I said Chief is the face, the icon, and the mascot of the Halo universe. It would be foolish to complete replace him. It’s ok to have off shoots of the main title but Chief is the face of Halo you can’t simply replace him.
don’t like the vibe of the real actor…
Tyrone the bear can’t be dumb if he loves all the halos!
I hope we play Locke hunting down the chief. I like a bit of gray morality in stories. I am also a sucker for heroic death for the protagonists.
my least favorite content from the series ODST and Reach, don’t have the Chief. That said I liked the characters in Halo Wars and the Chief wasn’t there.
Locke could be cool, but we already have chief and arbiter as cool playables… why make a new one?
hopefully he is actually cool
> It’s ok to have off shoots of the main title but Chief is the face of Halo you can’t simply replace him.
And don’t you think Chief’s irreplaceability could be a possible theme in the event of his death/retirement/disappearance? No matter what, Master Chief will always be the iconic figure of the Halo series, even if he ceases to be central in the future titles.
Think Mass Effect. Commander Shepard is the icon for that series, and he was the most instrumental in defeating the Reapers. His story arc is now complete. Should BioWare be done with the series now that the central figure is dead? Hell no; there are tons of other interesting characters, fascinating timelines, and immersive scenarios to explore. Not to mention the captivating gameplay. Just like Halo.

Gonna poke my head in here to point out that Commander Shepard isn’t a “character” in the typical sense but a reflection of the player. The Mass Effect trilogy thus has had “you” as the main character driving Shepard’s personality rather than him being a character by himself. As has been mentioned before, Halo started, and has almost entirely been focused on the ventures of Master Chief, with the exception of spin-offs. There is a reason Frank O’Connor recently said they aren’t “testing the waters” to retire or kill off Chief anytime soon. Outside of story reasons, there are extremely important branding reasons involved.
For those saying that Halo can go on without Chief, you’re completely right. But you don’t seem to understand how a franchise’s branding works when it comes to a character that has become the quintessential face of the series (and more: the entire Xbox brand). Luke Skywalker was never the face of Star Wars even during the original trilogy. Terry McGinnis was eventually re-replaced by Bruce Wayne in popular media (not canonically, given the time difference), who is STILL Batman to this day. Liu Kang returns almost every game of Mortal Kombat whether he has died or not. So if you want to make a far-future spinoff when the Chief is retired and coaching a young Spartan to replace him, sure, might be interesting. But it won’t be a main series game.
It has been said before, and been correct, that this would be equivalent to replacing Samus in Metroid or Link in Zelda, or Kratos in God of War, or James Bond in, er, Bond movies. Those series’ would continue. But it wouldn’t be a smart thing to do. (Not that it can’t be done really well! Look at Star Trek’s replacement of Shatner. Sure it caused issues, but some could argue the episodes with Picard were better.)
TL;DR it is unlikely (and unwise) to replace Master Chief without a very, very, very, very, VERY pertinent reason to do so. This has nothing to do with thinking he IS Halo, or that it wouldn’t continue without him. It’s all about franchise identity. Would people keep playing the games? I’m sure they would. And Halo would still be awesome. But his face is Halo for many people, and is synonymous with more than just Halo. Keep in mind that it is likely that the majority of Halo players don’t know much of the extended universe.
