I honestly find the hate on MLG funny.
Like of all the things to talk crap on, you find it necessary to hate on people who enjoy playing video games competitively? What about the rock stars, movie stars, politicians, or anyone else who gets paid excessive amounts of money to be selfish drug addicts who hate themselves and are terrible people?
And the “elitism” amongst the top tier Halo players is so much lesser than every other sport, or honestly any profession, that I can think of. Yeah there are the few guys who think just because they play MLG that they are in some exclusive club that makes them better than everyone else, but that is not only the exception but such a mindset is so much more common in almost every thing else you could possible think of.
Not to pull a life check or anything, but I find MLG and skilled Halo very enjoyable to watch. I also have been in a relationship for 4 and half years with a wonderfully attractive woman, I work 40 hours a week, I go to college, and I am in no way a “fat nerd”. And a lot of my friends who play Halo aren’t “nerds” either. Sure I know plenty of guys who are weird-o anime loving, full blown gamer nerds, but in regards to Halo this is far less the case with skilled players than many other games, specifically due to the fact that many of us are not gamers, we are Halo players. Honestly from my experience the biggest no-lifes tend to actually be the ones calling the skilled players no-lifes.
If it weren’t for Halo, I wouldn’t be anything more than a casual gamer, and I know many players that fall under that category, in which case they very often have more of “a life” than the “hardcore gamers” who talk crap to them. Again, not to say that all skilled Halo players are like that, but IME it’s usually the ones running around calling kids “virgins” and “no lifes” that are actually the virgins, and no lifes.
Back to MLG: The top tier players are often the most respectable and mature players in the game. Sure there’s guys like the Suddoth’s who are spoiled brats, or xXxX MLG RazerCydE XxX who has played 5 games of MLG and spends most of his time in Social Slayer telling everyone else how they are BK’s, but they are actually the minority in the community. The thing that “MLG Haters” still fail to realize is that most of the “True” MLG players, don’t leave the playlist or even the community. You don’t see 95% of the population, you see the 5% who are hardly even a decent representation of the community, and if they WERE what they claim to be, they wouldn’t even be spending their lives playing social slayer. Competitive players want competition, something that social playlists do not provide, therefore any true representation of the MLG community will never be experienced by someone who doesn’t frequent the playlist, or, more importantly, the forums. Especially when at this point most of the MLG community doesn’t even play the game anymore, but that doesn’t mean they don’t support the game and it’s future. For example I stopped playing Reach for 6 months and spent far more time on here than I did in game, in which I learned far more about Halo mechanics, the franchise, and the community that I had learned in my 10 years of playing Halo.
As usual I have forgotten where I was going with this, so I will just leave it at that.
edit: Also I just want to make note of, just in this thread alone, the “elitism” against players who enjoy Halo competitively, and the mindset that you are better than someone because you don’t enjoy competitive Halo which, apparently, automatically means that you have a “life”, which, apparently, makes you more worthy of existence. Also something to note: Many of you guys who despise MLG, seem to spend more time playing this game or on the forums and care just as much if not more about the game, than most MLG players that I have interacted with. Hypocrisy, and support evidence, at it’s finest.
