Well, judging by other threads on the topic of #HUNTTHETRUTH, I see that regardless of what happens, the Halo Wypoint community never ceases to complain.
Does anyone even remember how the I loves bees and Iris campaigns started out? Or the Cortana Letters?
The Cortana Letters started out like this: someone got some weird email:
I have walked the edge of the Abyss.
I have governed the unwilling.
I have witnessed countless empires break before me.
I have seen the most courageous soldiers fall away in fear.
[I was there with the Angel at the tomb]
I have seen your future.
And I have learned.
There will be no more Sadness. No more Anger. No more Envy.
I HAVE WON.
Oh, and your poet Eliot had it all wrong:
THIS is the way the world ends.
The I love bees campaign started out like this: A subliminal message in a Halo 2 trailer led to a hacked beekeeper’s website. Whoop de do. How lame. The Iris campaign started out like this: A user called Adjutant Reflex started a thread called “System Integrity Confirmed.” Obviously just a troll. You guys have such weak stomachs, that you can’t even wait a little while longer? You’re that eager to stop hunting the truth already? Good. Because you don’t have what it takes, and anyone who doesn’t have what it takes to hunt the truth should go home to their mothers! You call yourselves Spartans! Hah! A tortoise would make a betterSpartan!REAL Spartans don’t even HAVE mothers. They have ME! Back in my day, we didn’t have the developers trained to respond to the community! They never told us what was going on! We had to find that information out ourselves! And back then, we had to use Windows 2000 to find this out! Now get up, get your butts into gear, and HUNT THE TRUTH!
Dang it. Where’s Sergeant Johnson when you need him? He could do this kind of over-the-top motivational speech the right way. RIP, Johnson, RIP.
Edit: Yes, the Iris and I love bees ARGs did, in fact, feature countdowns. They weren’t at the very beginning, because having a countdown is a bit pointless if nobody knows about it yet. Those ARGs started out by building up to the countdown.
I can appreciate what 343’s doing with the whole #HuntTheTruth thing, but not everyone here does. Then there are the people who think 343 is just wasting everyone’s time, even though Bungie did something similar back when gaming was more than shooting people, maintaining the best KDR, and getting achievements.
For those of us who have been around for a long time, we’ve seen this before.
For the people who never really paid attention to anything but the multiplayer (and the campaign, marginally), It’ll probably fly right over their heads. Which is a shame, but it’s one of the realities of this generation, which just comes down to instant gratification and apathy towards the fiction, or anything that 343 does in general. (Again, even though Bungie did something like this a decade ago, and I don’t seem to remember people giving them -Yoink- for it)

But the point of all of the ARGS was the build suspense up until they actually had material to share, Or was comfortable with releasing info, You dont want to show to much to early but you want to keep hype going. And ARGS are a very good way to do this.

Oh yes? They had material to share. They shared it. I’m fairly sure they have more in store. I also think that 343 industries did a pretty good job with the suspense, otherwise a grand total of zero people would have been disappointed in the first place.
None of those came out after a count down clock… They came as a secondary hype along side a new trailer or they just popped up. With the “leaked” live action trailer image and that 5 second long in game footage of Locke in the Xbox one trailer everyone was expecting a trailer or vidoc. Also count down clocks for video games have always meant big news like a trailer or at least a new article on the game.
if they had made even a 1 minute trailer showing something and then had a link to this blog then I’m sure people wouldn’t have been anywhere near as disappointed if at all.

“The frontpage shows a floating counter counting down to specific time, all of which relates to the Alternate reality game. The first countdown ended on July 27, accompanied with the following message, “network throttling will erode”. The subsequent countdowns displays “this medium will metastasize” on August 10, and “wide-awake and physical” on August 24. Currently, the countdown is counting down to the day the Covenant will attack Earth.”
The I love bess campaign featured quite a few countdowns. The Iris campaign also featured countdowns. Check your facts. I’m not going to do all of the legwork for you.

You’re not understanding what he’s saying. Neither ILB nor Iris began with countdown clock or though an anticipating process, they were introduced subtly and subliminally through a trailer or a simple thread like the way most ARG’s have done it. Yes ILB and Iris had countdowns but that was to lead to the next stage or phase of the actual ARG itself, that was well after the ARG started and was already underway. It was to let those taking part in the ARG know to return for the next clue or the next piece of the puzzle.

I am fully aware of what Snockooz is trying to say, but It doesn’t matter if the countdown clock is used at the beginning or anywhere else in the ARG–it’s the same tactic, the audience will get hyped up and may or may not be disappointed when the next installment is released. All they gave us was “This is a countdown for something. We think it’s pretty cool.” I’ve seen books, games, shows, movies and even…well, quite frankly, every type of merchandise can be advertised this way. If you haven’t learned that already, then learn it now. You see, none of the other Halo ARGs began with an official announcement that hinted there would be an ARG. THAT’s the major difference.

Ok I get what you’re saying too. Many people prefer these ARG’s popping up mysteriously out of nowhere as it helps create a feeling of actual dark but intriguing entity lurking behind it. I personally have no problem what so ever with how Hunt The Truth started. I’m excited to take part considering I missed out on I Love Bees and Iris.

The difference is the ones that were on those ARGs you already new they were for an ARG and our expectation were bases around that. However throwing up a hype website with a trailer of MC getting shot in the head and a 3 day count down clocked after many many months dry of trailers and or vidocs? I’m sorry but that’s going to get hyped up much more than the count down to that next installment of an ARG thats already been up for a while…

Don’t give me that. It’s only been three months since the Beta. We got New Blood out recently, too. That had a ton of hints for Halo 5. It seems to me that you’re just being too impatient and too selective about what you want.
As to hype? There was this guy during the I love bees campaign who literally risked life and limb to get the next installment of the ARG–in order to receive a phone call out in the open in the middle of a yoinking hurricane. The ARG operator had to break out of character and tell him to put the phone down and get to safety.
You got a little disappointed. I get that. But I doubt you got hyped up enough to do something totally insane like that.

The beta was about the MP not the campaign. This site is hyping up the campaign not the mp. We have had little nothing when it comes to new about that and the closest thing we’ve had to a trailer of the campaign is the prologue and epilog of Halo 2A and that came out 5 months ago… Man has it really been 5 mounts?
New blood is external media yes something’s that happened may play a role in Halo 5 but 1. That gives us more question regarding halo 5 and little to no answers. 2. It only mentions MC ones and Locke has no part what so ever. 3. The book is about characters that haven’t even been conformed to be in Halo 5, and this is nothing like the Forerunner saga so even if Buck is in Halo 5 his role will be nowhere near as important as The Didact’s…
One man’s crazy hype does not set the standard for the rest of the community’s…
No I wasn’t that hype… However its is very possible that someone in this community was. And again, that was one man… I seriously doubt that ever a 10th of out community would have done that…
Also that was for the climax of the ARG itself… Everything he had done in the ARG was leading up to that moment… its kinda hard to compare the climax of something to the beginning of another…

I get it, now. You’re wanting spoilers. Get out of here. We already know that Locke, Arbiter and the Chief are returning. That’s more than enough spoilers. As to hints which allow you to guess what might happen. Stuff like New Blood is perfectly suited for that, as is huntthetruth. Confirming that stuff is going to happen is spoilers.
No, one man’s craziness doesn’t represent the rest of the community…wait, actually, that would make a lot of sense…
Anyway…in the I love bees ARG you were not informed that there was going to be an ARG, and once you had actually found something which could be an ARG, you were never told it was an ARG until after the ARG had ended.
The whole point of an ARG is to fully immerse the player in the game, even to the extent that the player may start believing that the game is not actually a game at all, but is instead real. 343 industries screwed up in that area by announcing huntthetruth.in the first place.
The countdown is not the issue. The issue is that the ARG should never have been announced. I love bees featured time travel, and the events of 2552 were directly being affected by the events surrounding the hacked I love bees website in 2004. Iris did something very similar.

Now your putting words into my mouth… I’m not asking for spoilers… I’m asking for a taste of whats to come in the Next installment of MC’s story line. A book that Mention his name ones doesn’t do that. The Forerunner Books did do this by showing as the Forerunner’s Power and the events leading up to the Didact becoming a sociopath. Both of these play a good role in Halo 4.
No the countdown is the issue… it shouldn’t have existed in the first place… espacially a Countdown that was screaming Campaign Trailer…
You are right an ARG shouldn’t be announced because it breaks the fourth wall.

I’m not putting words into your mouth. If Buck shows up in Halo 5, then you’re going to feel pretty silly if you said that New Blood didn’t provide hints as to Halo 5. Confirmation of plot points and characters = spoilers, and you implied you were after some confirmation.
If a little website had shown up with “huntthetruth” with a countdown and a bullet, with no prior announcement that it had to do with Halo [or 343i], would you have stuck around for the end of the countdown?
> Frankie’s own words on ilovebees and making similar ARG’s in the future.Other than that, it’s confusing for us being told to “Spartan up and wait for more” while also be told that “We shouldn’t have been given a little.”
I’m not Frankie, nor am I a member of 343 industries. I don’t have to agree with them. We should have gotten the ARG, but no announcement of it.
I’m sad that Frank O’Connor said that people aren’t interested in ARGs anymore. Any interest in “I love bees” at this juncture is a clear indication that actually, people still love them.

Slightly off-topic here, but… do we? I know that Locke and Chief will return, obviously, but was the Arbiter officially confirmed for H5G? If so, could you point me to it, I must have missed it…

I actually had (and still have) more fun with ILoveBees than with the actualy Halo 2…
I was really hoping for a trailer, but I really enjoy learning more about the story and I love the the hidden secrets, and clues they leave for us to solve. In the end I think i will enjoy this more, having this weekly in my opinion is better than a short trailer earlier. I mean the trailer will come, but it’s awesome they are doing more than just a trailer.
I like it.

Again… Word in mouth… I am not looking for confirmation of plot points and or characters… also the only book that gave spoilers was Silentium and that come out after halo 4… What the other books told us was the power and majesty of Forerunner Tech, something we realize the moment we get inside Requiem more so than the Halos. They also introduce The Didact and tell us the things he did. They don’t tell us Halo 4s story at all it tells us about thing we may experience in that game… a Taste… New Blood doesn’t do this…
No they should have dropped the Countdown all together, have guy start his blog posts today, and leave bread crumbs for the community to follow to the blog. Or have the countdown lead up to a Campaign trailer and put hints in it that leading to his blog.
