IGN First - Impressions

So after watching the IGN First review this morning, I walked away from it pretty happy. The enemies look fun to fight, guns still look like they feel good, and the fighting areas/world look absolutely incredible.

But I only have 2 things I was curious about.

  1. The lady said she was on heroic difficulty, but the damage from the boss fight looked pretty low for being on heroic. Maybe she actually wasn’t on heroic?

  2. 343 seems to have reduced the blood even more, and I personally would like them to add a little more, and that is coming from me and plenty of other people I’ve seen comment on it.

But overall I can see myself putting hours into this game, and I was so relieved to hear that the campaign story isn’t going to be made up of hundreds of fetch quests like most Ubisoft games turn out to be.

Also did anyone else catch that she mentioned the flood but hadn’t actually seen them yet??

she said and I quote “They were alluded to but not shown” so she’s just making guesses basically.

She was playing on Heroic, to be fair that was just the beginning, so it wasn’t supposed to be sweaty or anything.

I’m pretty sure the B-Roll was played on Easy. The amount of damage the player was taking is definitely not what you would take on Heroic. I’m assuming she meant she played on Heroic during her 4 hours with the game but the footage wasn’t her gameplay.

I don’t know man. 343i really nerfed the difficulties since Halo 4. I remember Halo 5’s legendary was pretty much heroic because they upped the difficulty in the late patches.

Be warned the Game Informer did quite of bit of spoiling.

I don’t agree with that. Halo 4 was pretty freaking easy but that’s also because levels were extremely linear (limiting what they can do difficulty wise) but Halo 5 was substantially more difficult (that end boss fight was infuriating)

Infinite will be easy for all the right reasons whereas Halo 2 was difficult for all the wrong reasons, so it’ll still be fun but you’ll be left yearning for something more challenging afterwards.

This video gave me actual hope and excitement that I didn’t expect to get.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been very worried, I still am, and I’ve had this feeling that even though many things seem both good and bad I’d get ultimately disappointed.
I still don’t think it’s unlikely that it won’t be what I’m hoping for, even if I’m disappointed I’m so attached to the franchise that I don’t think I’d be able to leave it behind. If Halo 5 didn’t kill my love for Halo, then how can this? I’m trying my best not to have unrealistic expectations.

Either way, what we saw today put a massive grin on my face, and it felt really good.

It’s definitely interesting to get a different perspective about the game from a party that is more independent from 343 Industries. However, the main things I wish to know is if there was any caveats related to getting the preview like signing a NDA which restricts on which pieces of information that they where allowed to share before a specific date.

When it came to the Halo 5 press copy, there where restrictions related to not being able to discuss or provide information about certain parts of the campaign before a specific date.

She implied that she was on heroic during her entire play through which has me worried cause those enemies were very easy to kill.

My guess is that the gameplay in the video was not hers. Both she and the other guy that I can’t remember the name of played it. It’s possible it’s either his gameplay or separate gameplay just for the video.
Her words at least were “Heroic did not mess around”. And it seems like she’s played all the other games before.

I think it was just as others have said B-rolll being played on normal. She probs was getting destroyed on Heroic and they wanted to show gameplay they looked good in after last weeks backlash

Looks great. The game has an ambient open world and more traditional single player set piece campaign. Can’t find fault with that.

It certainly sounds like a big game. Four hours and seemed to only be in the first part of the game.

They also don’t seem to be totally jettisoning the Halo 5 plot points. Seeing the Infinity, Halsey etc.

I am also quite reassured that they can pull off the thing which I think they’re doing and can kind of see why they might do it that way.

I absolutely died when the Pilot sees the Weapon for the first time. Not sure on the context but the utter terror on seeing Cortanas face is exactly how he should react.

Ryan’s footage was also in there.

For those who haven’t seen it yet. Be wary it does contain early plot spoilers.

Are you referring to the Game Informer video? That one is reported to have spoilers, whereas this IGN First video only recycled already-released trailer and gameplay footage and added some spoiler-free publisher gameplay.

Regarding the IGN video (11 minutes or so), one of my take aways is the whole notion of “New players might be lost in the Story”-- it’s the 10th (ish) game. We can’t keep doing - or expecting - this Recap / Stand-Alone story. At some point people are going to have to catch up, and maybe not start a huge Franchise brand-new on the latest game.

That’s precisely why I’d been a skeptical about how they’ve billed the game as a soft reboot and that it has a story for both recurring and new fans. I get they want a fresh direction, but at least wrap up what 5 started first. Which, I think is happening, but by all accounts the stuff about Cortana is almost in the background.

I don’t like the way she kind of reviewed the game and condescendingly talked down Halo 5, like game journalism I guess? It seems like anytime a new game comes out they have to trash the last one.

One thing that concerns me is she uses the word chore, like she sees the game as a chore to do the other objectives and that kind of stuck with me as someone who doesn’t have so much time to play anymore.

The nuance of the word chore though is that time is valued differently to her and she didn’t see it worth the errand to do or build on in the story. In a way its disrespectful to players who look at this game as like something to do for fun.

I don’t think it’s so much of an issue because these are very broad tropes and characterisations. Halo 4 can be reduced down to evil alien warlord wakes up and tries to blow up Earth with space laser; while guy tries to save friends life. It certainly helps if you have played previous games but I wouldn’t have thought it really essential. Anymore than an MCU movie for example.

I think it’s the fact that chief risked their lives to go get this girl and Foehammer is thinking either “shit cortana is still alive” or “we came all this way for this?”
