]This is something devs seem to have gotten wrong. People don’t hate QTE’s they just hate when they’re done wrong. When enemies move slow and lumber around so you can boop them, that’s when they’re hated but when they’re bad -Yoink- and require you to have a set of kill in reactions to do them they’re loved.
Example Star Wars Arcade Duels. A game style that are QTE’s at it’s fullest.
The one I think you’ve all seen the most are the Star Wars light saber battles. Where you move left and right to block and attack your foe. Those games are beloved because they don’t treat you like a baby, you react and fight DARTH -Yoinking!- VADER! Halo 4 could of easily setup a new mechanic for 343i to work off of when the elite first jumps MC as he climbs to the top of the elevator.
Instead of just saying “Rekt this guy’s -Yoink-” it could of be a tutorial into a QTE combat system. A system used many times later on in the game like when the Knight jumps onto you, when Crimson breaks out of Prison, when assassinating a hunter or when fighting the Didact. Instead of it being press X to human you have a set of skills and attacks.
Think of it as a first person fighting game. You see your enemies actions and you fight around them.
Left trigger is heavy left punch, left bumper is light left punch, and vise versa on the right side. A and directional movement with the joy stick could be a dodge, B is block again from which ever angle the enemy is attacking from. After beating your opponent into a pulp you could finish them in any of the ways 343i could think of. A quick draw of the magnum and a shot to the head, a super kick to the skull or just a knife to the neck.
This could be used in multiple different areas through the Halo experience even throwing it into MP such as a boxing gamemode, counter vehicle boarding and counter assassinations.
Someone boarded your ghost? Well if you’re quick enough you can press B to dodge their board making them flip off the side, RT to popping their shields allowing you to one shot them when they take your ride or X just to bip them off. As a boarder you could possibly have a counter breaker, but instead of the game just turning into the each person mashing the counter button when a boarder shows up, add a stall to it. You no longer instantly jack a vehicle but the boarder must act and each person must respond according to each other’s movements. Some vehicles could allow for certain actions and counter actions that both players must be prepared for by reading the situation.
I.E A banshee could roll and throw the enemy border off if they stay on for too long or the scorpion could have a electro-surge that zaps the border off. If the boarder is quick they can time their jump and slam right into the cockpit killing the driver with a vicious ground pound, them hop into the cocking and enjoy sitting in a pot of freshly made human soup as they blow their foes away.
Many things can be done with QTE’s but they can’t be small additions, you have to own up to them.
But hey’s it’s just an idea.
