If you have a 3000s card do NOT play MCC

My specs are a 3090ftw3 ultra and an i9-10900k both cooled with a custom loop with a 1300psu gold power supply. First off this is inexcusable for a AAA company to even have this problem, and before someone goes off about how you could have had too high of a overclock or your temps were to high they weren’t. Temps were at a cool 35C and my OC was 5.1 for the CPU and default with the GPU with no power bios changes. Not only that but I am not the only person who has had this game brick their 3000s card. This is just meant to be a warning to all the people who have a 3000s card to not play this game but if halo infinite is like this then there is no way I am touching that game.

Yeah, no, that’s not how hardware or software work. MCC didn’t brick anything.

Interesting thread, as I had this happen to me as well. I originally started to blame Halo as well. Abandoning playing the MCC wasn’t an option for me as I like the game too much.

I have the same GPU also, an EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3. I actually wound up losing 2 of them while playing MCC. First one lasted 15 minutes before I heard a loud pop sound, followed by a black screen with fans running at 100%. Also a burning smell coming from the GPU. Couldn’t get a video signal after that and needed to RMA the card. Second card lasted 2.5 minutes before having the same thing happen to it. For the third GPU, EVGA asked me to replace my 1200W PSU with one of their new 1600W ones. So they sent me the new PSU for free and a third 3090, and it has been running great ever since. I will never know if it was a bad PSU causing the cards to fail or something within the GPU. I also had a custom CableMod PSU cable kit hooked up to the GPU and other components. EVGA had me remove that as well and go back to stock cables, which I am sticking with from now on. I am very sorry to hear about your troubles and hope you can resolve it ASAP. EVGA support was great and never abandoned me until the problem was fixed. I commend them greatly for this.

Rumors are that there are defective fuses in the power delivery system on the GPU causing the failures. Not all EVGA GPU’s are affected. The popping sound were the fuses blowing. Old games like the ones in Halo MCC cause rapid power fluctuations which apparently result in the fuses failing.

Yeah I want to call out for people this is more than likely specifically EVGA 3090s https://forums.evga.com/Fixing-EVGA39s-7-Figure-Problem-with-FTW3-30-Series-cards-m3217284.aspx. There’s been some reddit posts and their official forums of the exact same issue.

I was about to say, didn’t this happen on other games with the 3000s? Could’ve swore I’ve seen others complain about this and blame their games too. Sounds more like an issue not tied to a game.

Sounds like a HW issue and not software.
As a test, go back to factory clock settings and test with those.

I was running all of the 3090’s I had at stock settings. Unfortunately the first two died on me while playing MCC, within minutes as well. I never had something like this happen to me before. First one 15 minutes, second 2.5 minutes. I was so angry when the second died so quickly. EVGA stuck with me though until the issue was sorted out. The third one I was sent has been working perfectly since late Feb. I really am happy I decided to stick with the EVGA. Runs extremely cold at 4K and fans are super quiet.

Hopefully all of the defective ones with the bad fuses have been removed from the market.

I am a console gamer, but MCC is the one of the very few games that have crashed, and then shut off my Xbox. Not sure if this equates to the topic. But something is not right.

My god, thats unfortunate but at least you got a working one now.

Halo 2, specifically, is causing black screens and fans to go up to 100%. I tried undervolting but that didn’t help. I’ve heard it might be PSU issues and ordered a 1300W (currently have a 850rmx from Corsair) but I’ve heard of people having this issue with 1200W PSUs as well…

I’ve got the EVGA FTW3 Ultra and really don’t want it to die. Do I just not play Halo? These are my favourite games :frowning:

Funny anecdote: When StarCraft 2 was released, the main menu didn’t had a fps limiter in place and made quite a few cards shutdown due to overheating issues and possibly damaging them. This was patched however but it is very wise to have some sort of limiter in place to keep your fps in check; no need to run 500 fps of you play on a trashy 60hz screen.

Which 3000 card are you running? For the 3080 and 3090, an 850W is cutting it really close for those cards. The lowest you should be using with one of these is a 1000W IMO. The 1300W you ordered will be perfect. Make sure it is no lower then a gold rating. I was using a platinum rated 1200W when my first 2 failed. 3rd and current is running on a 1600W platinum.

If the card fails within a 30 day window of you receiving it, EVGA will send you a brand new one to replace in 2-3 days, totally free. Afterwards, you will have to pay a fee of about $60 to receive a replacement, as long as your card is under warranty.

Also, yes Halo 2 is what killed my first two 3090’s. More specifically the level Regret, remastered graphics the first time, classic second, so it seems like graphics doesn’t really matter. I have extensively played H2 on the third (and my current) 3090 with no issues. The third time was really the charm for me. Most likely defective fuses in the first two, or a bad PSU.

I have the EVGA FTW3 Ultra. If your 1200 failed, I’m wondering if the 1300 I ordered will be enough… :grimacing: I ordered the EVGA SuperNova G2

So odd that Halo 1 ran perfectly fine, but then Halo 2 is killing it.

So you have a 3070, 3080, or 3090? I know you have a FTW3 Ultra, but which Nvidia GPU is it based off of? The 3080 and 3090 are quite power hungry and have rapid power demand changes, so it is good to have extra power to spare along with a high efficiency unit. Gold or above should do the trick.

Your 1300W G2 should be fine. It is good that you are running an EVGA PSU with the GPU. That way if there is a PSU issue causing the graphics to fail, they can better support you with replacements. If the card continues to fail even with a new PSU, it looks like you will need to file for a replacement card. Sounds exactly like what my previous cards were doing. At least your GPU is surviving though. My first 2 just died right away with no second chance attempts.

yeah i have been playing mcc with my 3090 since launch and havent had a problem. arent ftw3’s evga? didnt they just have issues with that mmo “new world” im thinking evga just makes bad cards at this point.

Sorry yeah I have a 3090! Put in the 1300W last night and played about 3 hours of Halo 2 and it seems stable :crossed_fingers:t4:. I’ll update here if it dies again.

Sweet choice! I wouldn’t worry brother. If it’s going to fail, from my own experience and research, it will do it within the first hour or so of gaming on the MCC. Heck, mine only lasted a few minutes. If you are 3 hours in, looks like it will be running great for a long time. I did the same thing when I got the new 3090, a many hour Halo 2 stress test lol.

Even funnier anecdote: Diablo 2 Ressurected (beta) has exactly the same problem. If you don’t limit your frames, your gfx card will run wild in the lobby till it shuts down at around 100°C. Glorious incompetence
