Who would it be? (By story I mean campaign, not necessarily as main characters)
Anyone that isn’t outright confirmed dead on the page, even people rumored to be dead.
I’d go for Second Lieutenant Oros on the spot. Funny marines like that who have their own quirks make you want to reload the save if they die, and not because you get an achievement for watching them eat a chocolate bar at the end of every mission on legendary by yourself.
Chakas definitely (assuming they actually lean into the Chakas part and not oh wow Guilty Spark is back like Palpatine or something). Would be interesting seeing him and Chief interact and his ties with the Forerunners could potentially be very useful.
Second place would be Tom and Lucy. I’ve always wanted to see Onyx in game and having a couple more Spartans to throw into the potential team up of Blue team, Osiris, and Red team would be very exciting.
Editing in a third place Grey Team. Dang I’m just now remembering how many awesome characters there are in the books. Time to reread them all again I guess.
I’m only like 3/4s through the first book, and wow, William Dietz can write a book correctly.
I’d love to see Gray Team make an appearance. After the end of Envoy, I’d love to see a game even that goes into their missions during the Created Uprising.
I’d love to see the Kilo-five team to make an appearance since I loved both those books and their characters a lot.
The Gray team is also a great candidate.
My first choice would be the Blue team, but we kind of got pleased already. I just hope it was not for that single time.
I always wanted to see Halsey and Blue Team in the games. My wish was granted in Reach (to my approval) and in Halo 5 (with poorer execution).
Now, I wouldn’t mind seing Chief Mendez, but I think he might be a bit too old for the role I’d like to see him in.
There are plenty of other characters from the more modern novels and comics that could fit into the games quite well, but I’d really have to sit down and think about it.
Kilo-5 for sure, but if not the whole team then Black Box.
Gray team would be great to see that generation of Spartans with their unconventional methods.
If though it has the best chance to happen, I would like to see Blue team and Red team reconnect.
Jun’s only been present in books and comics since we saw him leave with Halsey in Reach… Does he count?

The Precursors. I would really like to see them appear, at least in the forms they had when they battled the Precursors since they’re not extinct but in unreachable parts of space.

That voice acting was amazing. Made ONI appear even more sinister. I wish H5 had the same dark tone as HTT.

I just wanted my Halsey/Chief reunion, and they gave us all of 2 seconds for that before doing another “soft reboot”. Chief/Arby would also have been good, but that doesn’t count. You know what would have been the best? A proper take on Blue Team, one that would cleanse from our minds the colossal screw up that was their portrayal in Halo 5.
Of the remaining book characters, I agree with the above replies, Chakas would be the coolest addition

OMG Black Box, how could I forget. He would be the perfect foil to John (and also the antithesis of Cortana). BB2.0 really should be John’s personal AI.
Be nice to see grey team, blue team and red team together. Feels weird having all these spartans separated all the time.
I keep thinking Delgado could’ve been this new pilot character from Infinite. But age wise I don’t think it would work.
Sadly 343 seems to backtracking every Halo 5 and Halo 5 had the most strong book connections of them all.
