What would it be to? Currently, they use ballistic weaponry for the most part, but if they were to have a massed upgrade, would it go to predominately rail/gauss, plasma or even laser-based weaponry as the backbone? Obviously, there would be different elements but most likely one technology would dominate the rest/
There’s a possibility for all three really.
Rail/Gauss: The MAC guns and Stanchion show they’re familiar with the concept.
Plasma: Reverse engineered/ shared with the Ex-Covenant.
Laser: SPARTAN laser and Forerunner tech.
So, what do we think would emerge as the dominant technology should they go for a massed upgrade? My moneys on magnetic acceleration, to be honest.
While they have a lot of experience with magnetic weaponry, it’s been shown that they’re still a long way off making it portable. I think plasma would likely be the next step via covenant technology.

I mean, they’ve got the Stanchion; all I think they need to do is figure out a suitable power source (Forerunner tech?) and figure out how to stop the colossal overpenetration while still keeping the power somehow.
Although I could see them implementing plasma in the meantime.

It would definitely be something like this. UNSC would take apart the Covenant technology and figure ways to implement it into their own arsenal creating more effective weapons against shields.
I’m sure that the power cells they use to make MJOLNIR armor could be polished to be more cost-effective than they were at first, so I don’t think that they would have too much of an issue with finding an adequate portable power source for gauss weaponry. That said, my best guess would be a magnet-based arsenal, but I’m sure that they would use a blend of several methods.
