I loved using the BR right off the bat. When I found out that was making a comeback, I was in heaven. I used it for a solid week and a half, non-stop, once the game came out. Then a friend told me that the DMR is a better option. I had noticed that I was losing battles that 343 had pretty much guaranteed the Battle Rifle should win, and so I gave it a try. Soon after, the forums became filled with hate and malice towards the guns, the game, and 343. Because of guns. If you hate them for being so strong, why don’t you just use that to your advantage? USE the DMR, USE those ordnances, USE the Boltshot, USE the Mantis (Which definitely isn’t over-powered, you’re just playing stupidly by rushing it head-on, solo). If being killed by those is ruining your experience, then start winning, and get on the fast track by using those “Cheap” tools of destruction.
Personally, I think that 343 has done a fantastic job trying to balance the game. They managed to make the Gauss 'Hog, easily one of the most over-powered, and therefore unusable, tools of destruction in Halo, and were able to adjust it so that now we can find it in standard gametypes, and not just have to hope and pray that we get heavies.
Face it, the only people who want things buffed are the people that want, or try, to use these OP weapons and vehicles. The people who get killed by them want them nerfed. But imagine how much more BALANCED the game that everyone and their mother rages about will be if everyone becomes overpowered.
And if balance is really that much of an issue, go play Grifball, or Team Snipers. Then everyone’s on equal footing. Besides, you’ll have your 50 High Skill soon enough.
Probably 80% or more of the population would have the DMR as their Tool of Destruction. So that nullifies your first point. The second thing is that people often use other guns just for the sake of variety and because the other guns are more rewarding. They get bored with using the same old OP’d DMR that basically does all the work for you with its insanely large hitboxes and magnetism. They want to feel as though they actually aimed in the correct spot which earned them a legit kill. Using the DMR is not satisfying in the slightest.
Also, your very premise of “if everyone has it, then it’s not OP’d” is fundamentally flawed. By your logic, for halo 5, 343i could create a Promethean weapon that everyone spawns with which when the trigger is pulled, sends out a spherical pulse that travels at the speed of light which instantly vaporizes all enemies on the map. According to you, that’s balanced, because hey, herp derp, everyone can use it!!!
Thing is, everyone does use it. That doesn’t make it ok or fair for the other weapons.
The gauss hog being unusable? This is when I say, “you’re doing it wrong.” All you have to do is sit back and snipe people with it. avoid close contact/small spaces. It wrecks the tank no problem.
Although blunt, I understand your point. And if that statistic is even remotely close to true, then obviously people are complaining about the weapon that they’re netting the most kills with. And as far as the sarcastic Halo 5 weapon comparison, that’s not fair, and you know it. I get where you’re coming from, but you’re over exaggerating. It would take at least two shots from such a weapon to kill the entire team, not one.
And when I said the Gauss Hog is unusable in previous games, I meant that you wouldn’t find it in a standard gametype because it was TOO powerful. Now you can find it on Exile, and Dominion on Meltdown.
A good game of Grifball can be ruined by some laggers though… but thats just like any other Halo gametype.
I understand what you are saying OP. I hate the DMR but I use it cause to even compete with the other players in the match. The main problem I have with the DMR is since its so powerful is everyone uses it. It makes the game a one dimensional, one weapon game. Which hurts the game IMO. Adding balance to all the guns would make the game more desirable for me to play.
What’s the point in having other weapons then?
Although I must say that the DMR and Boltshot is definitely OP, it feels so good to have two starting weapons that cover for most combat situations. I just started making active use of the DMR and Boltshot, but only for these reasons.
-
To compete with other players. I kept losing BR fights against DMR users in the BR’s designated range. Things like this made me want to abandon Halo 4 multiplayer or just Halo 4 completely since I’m done most of the other stuff.
-
That sound of the DMR and Boltshot is lovely.
-
It’s so awesome getting payback on those DMR and Boltshot users. Give 'em a taste of their own medicine.
-
I love it when that +10 pops up on my screen. Something about it is just so satisfying. Halo 4 War Games feels really arcade-y.
-
Both weapons really suit my playing style.
Well, clearly there is no point in having other weapons.
No, but seriously, I’m just saying that until the DMR is a adjusted, which it will be, that people take advantage of it, which they are, until it is fixed. Bungie fixed the Battle Rifle back in Halo 3, so post-launch weapon adjustments are definitely doable, we’ve seen it with the Boltshot.
Giving 343 time is all that we need to do right now, especially with a game that’s barely 3 months old.
I’m both a BR user and a DMR user. Which I use depends on the map and how I feel at the time.
But even I can say the DMR is definitely overpowered, simply because of it’s range. It’s stupidly long effective range and the power behind the DMR leads to A LOT of DMR camping e.g. Big team battle on Ragnarok. It can be very frustrating at times.

And this is why I posted to begin with, to see if people were actually making an effort to turn their situation around by using the weapons that kill them the most.

I definitely agree that the combination of map lay-out and weapons like the Light Rifle and the DMR, especially DMR, make some games unbearable, but working with a team of even 3 people can break out of something like that. It’s just a big game of chess, with the only limiting factors being your ability to strategize, and your connection.

But what about those without a team? Me for example. I can guarantee that the majority actually don’t have a team (Or a decent one anyway) either.
My connection is actually really good and I almost always flank and use other strategies to get the upper hand. However, when you’re on a team of randoms against a team of 3-4 people and 4 randoms with DMRs camping on the hill in Ragnarok, there is almost no way out. You can attempt to flank all you like but they have a perfect line of sight through all three passageways (Cave near the pelican, Rail gun cave and the stream). If the DMR and LR weren’t around that wouldn’t be a problem as the BR and Carbine aren’t stupidly effective at all ranges.

I understand your predicament. I played Halo 3 as a random for about 2 and a half years… The only way to get a group of buds to roll with is to join a community (Probably not this one, considering most of the people here are full of negativity) like HaloCommunity, or HaloUnity. They’re what’s left of HaloCharts, which was where I met the guys that I roll with.
But in your current state, I’d say that you just send invites to the best teammates you have from your previous game, and see if they’ll stick it out with you. At least then you have people to communicate with…
If we were mad because we were losing all the time, then we’d use OP weapons to get an edge. But we find something more to the game than winning.
> If we were mad because we were losing all the time, then we’d use OP weapons to get an edge. But we find something more to the game than winning.
That seems to imply that you’re mad at the game for something else, but if that’s the case, why are you mad at a game? I’m just suggesting something to at least make the game bearable to people who can’t stand not being number one…
I only use it to be on par with everyone else. Kill or be killed.
i am, but as soon as i finish the sticky detonator commendation i’m going back to br/carbine
Only reason for me to use OP weapons:
Getting the commendations done.
Here is my question: Does anyone have any actual evidence that these things are overpowered? I mean, 343i has access to all kinds of stats. I’m guessing they probably know the kill ratios with certain weapons. Can you show me that the Boltshot or DMR have a much better kill ratio than the BR?
