So it’s now known we have a buddy joining us as Master chief in Halo Infinite who just happens to be a pilot. Now, if Halo is open world and say he fairies us around the Halo to different missions/locations, it would be cool to be able to customize ‘our’ pelican. I thinking nose art, color/camo scheme, style - swapping it out the classic look for the Halo 4/5 model - even get to use covenant style dropships. Maybe upgrade it - weapons, abilities that can be used in mission - Aerial bombardment, supply/weapon drops, etc.
Many won’t like that. But I do think it’s gonna be similar to that.
Done wrong that could be a cheesy gimmick that many wouldn’t like.
On the other hand, if its optional, or an interactivish loading screen that would be kinda cool.
But my god if its like the Destiny loading screens of the flying ships I would lose my mind.
While I would like the idea of customization of your ride (as long as it still is AI controlled) It could be another option. But then I would also want to be able to customize my Phantom (I am still assuming we will be able to play as Elites in Halo infinite).
“Master Chief, I need you to go and collect 20 plasma generators from the Covenant.”
I imagine he’ll be a more fleshed out version of Foehammer from CE, and not a fast-travel mechanic.
To me, the idea of a mainline Halo game, being an open world design, while impressive, would limit the story’s flow. As we’ve seen with most open world games, you get an intro cutscene, followed by a rough tutorial, then your given an objective to achieve. This is followed by some light combat, followed by either a boss fight, or firefight-esque section were waves of enemies attack. Upon completion, your character is wisked away to some hub where players can customize thier character and go to in game stores for gear and perks. You are then sent out into the world to find items, gear, and kill enemies, all in the hopes of leveling up enough to proceed onto the next portion of the story.
The problem with this, is that Halo has been a story focused game. Limiting progression behind leveling walls shifts player focus to caring only about leveling thir character up enough to proceed with the game, rather than playing the game for the fun of the story.
Think Destiny, where you can’t do the next story mission until you reach a certain character level. This disrupts the stories progression. Player forget what it is the story is trying to convey, and focus is shifted to getting to that next level.
I think a better way to expand the story progression, would be to have several objectives listed and you get to decide what order to tackle the net set missions. For example: In order to unlock the forerunner defense grid and shut it down, the Chief must shut down the back up storage facility, and take out the power conduits. You can choose which to do first. This could open up new avenues of exploration, and even find secret rooms with intel drops, and weapons.
This new pelican pilot could be your friendly new uber driver, ferrying you to each mission, and even providing some limited comic relief via cutscenes and/or communications. It could add a level of brevity in the story and comradery with other characters.
Can people please tell me where the idea the game is open world is coming from? Tbh I doubt it would happen but its a cool idea, Open world just isn’t halo.
