Listen, despite me being a big fan of Halo 5 (I think it’s the best one since Halo 3), I always give my best to not be single-minded to criticisms, especially from the fans. Whenever someone tells me Halo 5 is CoD in space (nevermind Ghosts) because of sprint, its mobility, and so on, I genuinely think about those claims. I put a lot of thought in whether I agree with something or not. Some of the complains, I agree wholeheartedly, while others, I just find silly. Though, it’s all terribly subjective.
Anyway, I’m digressing. I want to ask you people what would Halo 5 be like to the community if it was entirely re-skinned and sold as a new game, yet still retained the same mechanics and so on. The thing is, about 95% of the complaints towards Halo 5 stem from comparisons to previous titles in the franchise. No split-screen? We only say that because the other games had split-screen, so we need to keep in mind that most games that come out nowadays don’t have split-screen, and no one complains about it because there’s nothing to compare it to or because its previous entrees didn’t have it? Sprint? Again, only because people compare it to Halo 1–3. Forge controls are complicated? Because the previous Forge controls were simpler. Lack of content? Okay, I’m not defending this as I do think Halo 5 is very short on content, but we only say so because the previous games had way more content. Technically speaking, Halo 5 has more content than Rainbow Six Siege or Battlefront, so if it was a new game, people wouldn’t complain all that much. Story? Actually, the story sucks, regardless of how you put it.
So if Halo 5 was a new game, what would you think of it?
Just to add, I believe asking yourself this question is the best way to criticize Halo 5, as, by my philosophy as a writer, editor, and book critic, you’re supposed to critique something for what it is, not for what you want it to be.
i have noticed the ppl that started playing from either each or later dont seem to have an issue with how things are going, as much, its the ppl that have been around since halo 3 or earlier that seem to have the most complaints. i might be wrong in that. As for me i only played lan parties on halo2 i didnt get my owqn xbox till halo 3 in which that was my favorite multiplayer until halo 5, i hated reachs MP and halo 4 was ok. Looking at Halo 5 for what it is, it this was the first ever Halo the MP is great, and a good game
As much as I advocate for certain aspects of the game to retain the original gameplay, a reskin will not work. The gaming community has changed and Halo needs to change with the population/target market.

I agree (even though I’ve been around since H3).
My problem isn’t that they are comparing it to older games (because it is a franchise and there are certain expectations that come along with that), but more the ridiculous complaints. Ones about sprint, where they fail to remember that it was BUNGIE that added it, not 343. So while there is room for comparison between titles, the rose coloured glasses tend to come out in full force with this franchise.
Black Ops - Modern Twitch FPS
Fifa - Sports title. Football (I’m English, this is how we say it and it’s big here)
GTA - Open World action game
Fallout - Huge Open World RPG FPS
Minecraft - World Builder/Survival game
NBA - Sports title . Basketball game (But big in the US)
Destiny - Loot based FPS
Madden - Sports title. American Football (Again big in the US)
Battlefront - Casual Large scale FPS
ARK - Survival MMOFPS
Plants vs Zombies 2 beta - Zany Squad Shooter
Halo 5 - Arena FPS(?) Casual Large Scale Modern twitch FPS
Rainbow 6 - (which swaps with Halo 5 in position) Tactical FPS
The games lacking content are near the bottom. I don’t think that is a coincidence. Whether Halo is marketed as Halo or not, it still has very few gametypes and completely new maps. This hurts replay-ability.
If you look, even the games in the FPS, or Sports genre have a clear audience and focus. That is different from the other games. Halo has one but it’s afraid to be just the Arena FPS. It is suffering an identity crisis.
So… what’s your point? The way people look at a particular thing would change if you completely change the context in which that thing exists? That’s just a basic observation. Of course people would look at “Halo 5” differently if it wasn’t “Halo 5”. That doesn’t say anything about the Halo community or Halo 5’s quality. You could apply that same hypothetical situation to any number of things.
Halo 5 is a mainline Halo title and fans have every right to compare and judge it as such. It doesn’t matter what other games are doing, Halo fans are going to judge Halo games by Halo standards. I’m not going to think any better of Halo 5 just because other games in the genre also have content issues(if anything that just indicates that the genre as a whole is in a sad state), because I’m judging Halo 5 by the standard of Halo games.
I’ll explain my frustrations as civilly as possible
What you’re saying makes perfect sense in that, if the game was labelled something different, I’d possibly somewhat enjoy it for what it is. Halo 5 is not a bad game, it’s just an absolutely terrible Halo, and not a game that caters to my tastes. The issue isn’t just that it says Halo on the box, the issue is that because it says Halo on the box, and because of 343’s direction**, there are no real Halo games coming out**. The longer this goes on for, the more the community will have changed, and the possibility of returning to the greatness of classic Halo is dissipating.
I’m upset because I’ll never have a new Halo game to play. I like other games, but I used to play them for a couple of weeks to change things up, and then always return to Halo.
Halo was my rock. I played each of the first 3 for years, with small breaks for new games here and there. I cared about getting good at it. I cared about the community and how Halo was viewed by outsiders. I don’t have that rock anymore.
I’m playing Rainbow Six Siege right now. It’s fun as Hell… but I don’t take it seriously (I still try to win, don’t get me wrong), and I don’t really care about my profile and rank on it. I know I’m only going to play it for a little while before moving on.
With 343 in charge, Halo is dead to me. I’m not going to buy it because A) I don’t want to support what I consider the death of good Halo, and B) I don’t find their gameplay fun. I honestly don’t like Halo with Sprint, Clamber, no 1-50, a stupid abundance of unlockables, and all the other nonsense inevitably force upon their games.

Well, it’s all very subjective, but I respect your opinion. There are reasons why people like Angry Joe are considered such great reviewers. If you watch his Halo 5 review, he’s extremely fair with the game and hardly ever makes a complaint that’s a comparison to the previous titles. He treats the game on its own merit, and as a result, he liked the multiplayer, though he pointed out many problems, of which most I agree with.
I would likely think the needler cheap. right now we’re just glad its useful.
I would think Warzone a great concept, but underdeveloped (that hasnt changed).
I would wonder why all the weapon varaints dont show up in all modes.
I would want a jet pack to go with my thrusters.
I wouldnt be pissed with the armor variants, but would instead wonder why a AAA game looks like they hired the artists who worked on Warframe.

Well, ignoring my hate toward what 343 is doing and pretending Halo 5 is a new franchise… I still think it’s annoying and unfun. I wouldn’t rate it much higher than a 7, anyway.
It would be the kind of game I play for a couple weeks, and then go back to Halo.
There’s just no depth there to grab and hold me. It’s such a shallow gameplay experience, IMO. The lack of content only makes it worse.

The gameplay is still horrible, the graphics dated and inconsistent, the amount of content severly lacking and the business practices concerning updates and microtransactions shady at best.
The only thing that would change if H5G were a new IP is that I could just ignore it like I basically ignored Titanfall or any other “Me too”-game that got released with the exact same mechanics over the course of the last decade, since somebody else would be probably making a real Halo game instead and I’d have the option to play my favorite franchise while doing so.
The quality of the game doesn’t change with the title on the cover. Only the taste of betrayal in your mouth does…
