IDEA - Replace people who leave games with bots

So, great idea I heard…

What if when people leave mid-game or right as the game is starting, they get auto-replaced by bots? At least in social and BTB. That way there’s always full game, and you never have to deal with the horrible 4v1 lock for 10 straight minutes. And, it’d let 343 really implement the bots they’ve clearly been working so hard on.

This could have the opposite effect.

Bots are easily outsmarted and in a slayer gametype may feed the other team kills.

When I was on the flights, 1 of the games I joined was already half way through, so don’t know for sure that bot’s would replace team member dropping out, maybe easier way is real people filling the gap if someone drops out etc

Yep. Had games where being outnumbered was better than having active, but bad teammates. Look at it like this in a 3v4 scenario, your team can’t be overkilled, but theirs can.

I’m pretty sure this is the idea, not as sure with btb though

I have a bit of a love hate relationship with bots filling the ranks. They tend to just feed kills to the enemy team.
With just missing 1 team mate I can usually make due, but being down several is just wasting time.

Maybe they can strike some sort of balance where 1 player leaving doesnt do anything, but being down 2 either spawns in bots or maybe just gives the option to forfeit?

Didnt they already confirm this?

If only one player quit, it’s not necessary to replace him by a bot, but if a lot of player quit, it could be really good ! But if you fighting with 7 bot against 8 players, it’s would be weird lol !

For Infection, I really hope they will replace absent player by bot, I really can’t stand to play in game where there isn’t enough zombie ! (I also wonder what it could give to play against zombie bot)

This is true; though I do think if they use the max difficulty bots (which they stated, there are bots better than the Spartan level ones from the demo), it’ll at least be better than getting stuck in a 1v4. Note I’m only talking about social arena, not comp of course. But personally I think it really ruins the fun of the game, for both teams, when there’s multiple players missing; one team just patrols the map doing nothing for most of the game, the other team just waits and hopes to pick people off to keep the score even. I’d rather lose the game and have some allies, even bots, that help me than play a boring game for 10 minutes just so the game doesn’t mark me for quitting.

Well that I’m aware it already does. However, that depends on people in the same server area to connect at that time, and you also can’t throw real people in a game that’s about to end. So, I think it would be cool if they used bots.

If they did I didn’t see, but I hope so!

They just need to have join in progress for social playlists.

Yeah I’d agree, I think 3v4 you’d be fine but with multiple players gone, I’d rather have bots, even if it feeds the other team. I’d rather just get to a play a semi-decent game. Also, I would love if bots are automatically there to replace missing players in non-slayer game modes, since there’s no feeding problem.

nice idea, but that would take out the feeling of greatness when 2/3 beat 4.

This is a pretty much eventual guarantee. They should definitely be on ODST or Spartan difficulty, though.

Across the industry, when you have a healthy amount of concurrent players you sub in another player that fits into the MMR. Then the sub in player takes a reduced impact to their rating regardless if the team wins or loses.
That and repeated disconnects/leaving results in a status placement or a hit to their MMR, etc.

That’s just for casual, where as in ranked play it can be pretty steep or literally no replacement, but an option to reconnect, etc.

So I don’t see why you’d ever want a bot when you have a pool of eligible players at the same or similar level or the opportunity to dump a higher MMR user when people are disconnecting because of an impending loss. (Not to mention in some games, if you join a losing team mid-match and stick around you get a small sorta “good sport” bonus, etc).

Additionally, the only time you typically start to see bot replacements is when a game is dying with a small player pool or if it’s a mobile game spoofing full lobbies lol.

I would like to see an immediate bot respawn until a player comes in and replaces the player. If a player joins a ranked game already in progress they should get a benefit. Points for the win and no points lost for the loss. Obviously there will be penalties for people leaving.

I think JIP should be optional since not everyone wants to join in the middle of a game with a losing team. If people quit then they deserve bans but if they reconnect within a minute or 2 then the ban could be removed.

As for bots I think in the long term they will be helpful since eventually population may end up being low so bots will help players struggling to find a match.

If players don’t mind JIP then bots would be a great to way to fill the empty spots then let the player join when one of the bots dies to avoid a player losing out on a kill due to a player joining.
