[Idea Inside]Should Halo 4 have something like Halo 2s Ranking System?

By “something like H2s ranking system” in the title, you can see that I won’t propose to bring the ELO system back, because that was used to develop TrueSkill, proving that TrueSkill is superior, but we probalby got bad memories back in Halo 3s ranked (derankers, new accounters…etc), and that was because getting 50 was the end of the road for many, but not for those good people that still wanted challenge and made new accounts to get a 50 again (which was easier than with a main account). Or bad memories in the non-existent invisible trueskill system that is in every competitive playlist of Reach (excluding arena).

What we want is these ranks back, right?

Those ranks will represent real skill, but they won’t be in a individual playlist as you’re used them to be, but instead you need to play every ranked playlist to earn one of the 50 possible number ranks.

THE SYSTEM:

There must be X number of permanent playlists when the game releases, and in every of those, a skill number which will look like those in Halo 3 and not yet like Halo 2, and those will represent skill in that one playlist, and not in the whole game (that’s what the H2 ranks are for).

EXAMPLE

Ranked Playlists
Lone Wolves [FFA]
Team Slayer [Default Slayer 4 vs 4]
Team Doubles [Default Slayer/Objective 2 vs 2]
Team Hardcore (placeholder for MLG) [Hardcore Rules 4 vs 4]
Team Snipers [Snipers 4 vs 4]
Big Team Battle [Default Big Team Slayer/Objective 8 vs 8]
Team SWAT [SWAT Slayer/Objective 4 vs 4]

In this example, there are 7 permanent playlists, and you need to play in every of those in order to get the last rank (50).

The H2 ranks are an average of your skill number in every ranked playlist you play in.

Here is a player, and he has the following trueskill values in every ranked playlist:

LW: 35
TS: 50
TD: 35
THC: 21
Sipers: 36
BTB: 43
SWAT: 40

In Halo 2 rank form, he is a legit 37.

The Halo 3 playlist skill number represent skill in one playlist.
The Halo 2 skill numbers symbols will represent skill in the whole game.

Do you like this system? Would you want it to be in Halo 4? Have you got something against it? You want to support it?

Please post and discuss.

Its an ok idea, but how will that get rid of any of the problems with the previous ranking systems.

I’m hating the idea of having to play SWAT, Snipers and Hardcore just to be able to get my overall rank up. I dislike these playlists and hate them even more when played in ranked. That and I suck at sniping now.

> Its an ok idea, but how will that get rid of any of the problems with the previous ranking systems.

The problem with 1-50 from Halo 3 was that getting to 50 in a playlist was all you needed to do to get the last rank. This brought the following problems: Dranking, Boosting and New Accounting, this system eliminates that.

The problem with arena is that it’s just one playlist (lacks variety), were your rank resets every 3 months, wow…

This system way superior than those in the past Halos, because it’s hard to get to the last rank, and has lots of playlist variety.

I understand, and this could be a problem for many.

My example was 7 playlists, but maybe the player could eliminate 1 or 2 playlitsts that he doesn’t like.

To fix this, here’s an example:

To get a 50, you need 5 50s in out 7 playlists.

By default everyone will have Team Hardcore and SWAT eliminated (with an X*) from there, so that they can’t get access to them, but if they change SWAT for Snipers, then they will be able to play it and ranked to raise their global skill rank.

Lone Wolves
Team Slayer
Team Doubles
Team Hardcore
Team Snipers
Team SWAT
Big Team Battle

It can be changed, depending on the kind of person.

Anything but Arena. I hope they implement something like this BEFORE halo 4.
I like the idea of being challenged. Halo 3 was to easy to get the highest. We need something like Halo 2 where anything above 30 is good.

Best idea i’ve seen.

What makes you think people won’t derank and boost with your system. If it uses TrueSkill how H3 and Reach did deranking and boosting will be just as effective. In fact an account with an overall level 50 will be all the more desirable and people will boost/cheat/whatever to get it.

Too bad, H4 will use trueskill no matter how much we, or 343i don’t want that to happen.

Depends on your definition on boosting.

I got 2 definitions for boosting that appeared in Halo 3. 1. you made a new account, and carried a bad player. 2 you deranked (to 20-30) with your main and played with a player that was between 45 and 50.

A problem that this system definitely gets rid of is account selling, because it’s very hard to achieve the last rank.

The only fix for boosting method 1 is making everyone rank up at the same rate unlike H3. And fix for boosing method 2 is a report option, that when LOTS of people report you for losing on purpose in a short period, you are banned from ranked for 24h/2 weeks/1 moths/permanent.

You can have video proof when reporting a player that was afk or had turbo controllers.

Do want.

MS owns Halo and Trueskill so yeah…It’s going to be in H4. Although it is a good system, if you rid all the exploits.

And I am not sure you have very much experience with boosters in Ranked. Deranking on your main account would not boost your main account. And you don’t want to make a new account to carry a bad player.

Here is how boosting went down in Halo 3.
You have -EXP boosting. This is where you make an account with the sole intent of losing games. This will make you look like a really bad player and anyone you play with will get a boost for “carrying” you. Since the player on the -EXP account is usually much better than their skill suggests, this created an exploit. New accounts were especially easy to boost with a -EXP account. You could get a 50 in 20-30 games.

Then there is circle boosting, where you match your friends and give eachother wins or ties. It is pretty hard to rank up using this method so it is uncommon.

Then there is the only legit form of boosting, where you go in with a high rank on a new account. Since you are a level 1 playing with a 50 you will match high ranked players and rank up quickly as long as you win.

All three of those methods will be viable with your system.

And with -EXP boosting, it isn’t that hard to get 5 50’s. I could do it in 100-150 games. much more than a single 50, but then again a 50 with your system is much more prestigious. (means I can charge more).

>

2# and 3# will work with my system, but those were very uncommon.

As for the -EXP one (which I forgot to mention), I sure know how it works. However, It won’t be a problem if everyone ranks up at the same rate like I mentioned before.

> Best idea i’ve seen.

Thanks.
