Just a quick thought that sprung up in my mind out of the blue. Familiar readers of the Halo books will remember in First Strike that the Fuel Rod Cannon had a fail-safe that would cause the weapon to explode. What if something like that were incorporated for the Covenant arsenal? What I was thinking was that when certain Covenant weapons run out of ammo, a fail-safe could be activated that sets the weapon to overload and produce an explosion whose intensity and effects differ with each weapon.
Way I see it, Covenant weapons become pretty useless since you can’t typically find ammo for them once they run out. So why not be able to cause them to overload once they do run out of ammo and be able to throw them as impromptu grenade? Of course not all of them would be damage-dealing. I imagine that the Plasma Pistol could be used similar to a power-drain whose effectiveness depends on how close one was to its blast. Fairly close? A good chunk of your shields would be wiped. Farther out? You’d be safe. Perhaps the Needler can stick to enemies or at least explode into needle shards if it comes into proximity of an enemy? Think along lines like that.\
if its were like the Tediore guns in Borderlands 2 it would be really overpowered, since with those you detonated whatever ammo was in the gun. But if we’re talking just empty guns…I can imagine clearing entire campaign missions with just plasma pistols
Hmmmm, I’m going to have to say that I wouldn’t want to see this in matchmaking. There’s already enough people spamming grenades, I don’t think we need any more. In campaign I think it would be kind of cool to see something that allows us to relive some of our halo CE fun! But it would have to have selective use so it doesn’t become a cheesy novelty
I’m not sure I love the specifics of this idea, but FWIW I always thought that Covenant weapons were underpowered except in Halo 2.
It’s a creative idea, and IMO, something similar should be added to make the Covenant weapons more viable. As it stands the only really good one is the plasma pistol in Halo 4.
Well… I don’t know.
The dead-man’s switch you mentioned sounds like the dead-man’s switch we saw in Halo:CE. You know, on that purple fuel rod cannon with a battery instead of a magazine, went critical whenever the operator was killed.
I’m not sure about the other Covenant weapons, but I think it would be a perfect fit for that particular model of FRC. In addition, I’d like to see that version of the FRC appear as a heavy weapon akin to Halo 3’s Missile Pod or Flamethrower.

Perhaps giving this feature to the majority of the Covenant arsenal isn’t ideal, but I do appreciate your willingness to see it on the FRC. And on a off-topic note, I too would love to see the Missle Pod and Flamethrower return. They were difficult to master, fun to use.

Seeing this return would be cool. I loved this in combat evolved, it made the grunts dangerous in death haha.
Seeing the Missile Pod and Flamethrower return would awesome.
i can see this adding a whole new twist into combat. Campaign or Matchmaking. The part i really like is how you said different weapons would have different effects.
Like if you are out of fuel rod ammo you could throw it like a grenade or if you are out of plasma pistol ammo you could make the gun explode on your location. Giving your life to knock out the shields of those who are close to you. If used well you could have suicide bombers.
There could even be a skull that makes AI use these features more often. Grunts would be a major pain and certainly not useless, speaking of grunts I have an idea.
I like this idea. It would definitely be a cool feature to see in a future Halo game.
Besides running out of ammo, I thought it would be cool if the gun exploded if it overheated. Basically, if you keep shooting it without venting the gun (something like the plasma repeater) it would explode in your hand. If we took the plasma repeater for example it would still maintain the same fire rate and not slow down. However, if it overheats, it would explode in your hands and maybe damage you a bit or kill you.

For me, the current FRC isn’t fun to use. My suggestion stems from my desire to see the FRC reworked as a powerful use-and-discard weapon akin to Halo 3’s heavy weapons.

I like the idea if it is put in correctly. It could be helpful to just kind of make a distraction and as long as the explosion wasn’t too damaging I think it couldgive covy weapons an interesting thing to set them further apart.
Someone else mentioned Tediore from Borderlands and I think that too many people will think 343 is stealing from Gearbox for the idea to fly on it’s own.
Really I want 343 to do something with the overheat mechanic and make it fun and unique without being blatantly overpowered. The best idea I can think of for the overheat mechanic is best encapsulated by the Beam Rifle.
With the Beam Rifle, you can either fire at a steady and effective rate to maximize DPS or you can frontload your damage and burst your target down at the cost of a lengthier animation and extra ammo.
The only real question is how to apply this concept to a weapon such as the Storm Rifle.
