So I have this idea for a very story driven pre Halo CE game. Just wanted to hear what the community thinks. This will probably mainly appeal to us book nerds more than anyone else.
The premise is: You are a normal Marine, not even an ODST. You’d have no shields, no radar and minimal heads up display. You can’t rip off turrets and carry them (never liked how that was possibly in ODST in terms of realism) and unless a vehicle is stationary vehicles aren’t exaclty able to be stolen by you. You can however move and set up the Halo 2 machine gun turrets as well as order your squad mates to do things. Some missions you’d fight Insurrectionist forces, others you’d fight overwhelming Covenant forces before you are eventually forced to pull back to an Evac bird and fly into orbit only to see the planet you were just on get glassed as remaining UNSC ships flee the area.
One of the last missions would have you as a member of a squad of Marines stationed at a small base near a jungle on the planet Sigma Octanus IV as the Covenant attack. Your base and most of the men and women are nearly all wiped out by a massive air and ground Covenant assault on the base, but you and a few Marines survive. One of your group calls to the ships in orbit for support to which they say they are having their own troubles up there but will send what they can. You wait a bit and see a single Pelican in the distance. A single Pelican drop ship seems more like a burial detail than reinforcements at this point but you pop smoke anyway and wait for them to land. As soon as the hatch opens you see 12 identical armored green giants stroll out and take up defensive positions as one of them walks up to you and asks who’s in command. It’s at this point that you notice his rank in your heads up display: Master Chief Petty Officer Spartan 117. Your reinforcements are 12 of the legendary Spartan II super soldiers.
That’s the basic idea as I have it now. I’d just like to hear what everyone thinks of it.
That would be cool. IMO they should make a tactical guerrilla-based game that takes place on one of the neutral planets which is inhabited by both Covenant and humans (as seen in Escalation). You could be an undercover ONI operative which incites local rebellion against the oppressing Covenant/rebel regimes. Just my two cents.
I like the idea, but as I say about any off-shoot Halo game idea, I think it should be made by a different developer to avoid 343 making it feel like a normal Halo game.

And to keep them from butchering it like they always do.
Seriously though yeah I would have a different developer make it and it would have a much different feel obviously, I mean you are a regular Marine in this.
I’d like to see Spartans vs. Insurrection forces. Probably after 2553 because the Rebels have stolen a lot of UNSC tech and have gained the support of many Outer Colonies…not to mention they are allied with the Covenant Remnant. It would be cool to see the Rebels have Spartan-like soldiers and go head to head with UNSC S4s. it’s not impossible especially as there are a growing number of defectors from all agencies with varying security clearances; examples include UNSC Colonel Robert Watts and General Graves (even Spartans themselves, i.e. Ilsa Zane, Soren-066) so its not impossible for the Rebels to get cutting edge tech. Also there seems to be a frantic race for Forerunner technology after 2553. Venezia, Terceira,Talitsa and maybe even a Forerunner installation are good locales to focus the story on. They are mentioned in in-game lore, but are never expanded upon.

That could be interesting and would make a battle between two groups of Spartans (ie big team Slayer) technically canon lol

Yes, exactly! I get the whole War Games simulation thing, but simulated or not, a rocket launcher or Rail Gun will KILL…that’s assuming they use live ammunition. Maybe even the weapons are just holographic projections and the Spartans “freeze” like in Ender’s Game. In any case Spartans vs Rebels would be more compelling. I’ve been blasted for this before, but I think Halo could use a lil more blood and gore. Maybe not on the level of Gears of War, but at least decapitations and an arm or two with explosions. Of course it doesn’t take a physicist and/or physician to tell you what would happen when you take a direct Scorpion tank shell to the chest…

When one takes a tank shell to the well anything… The person is vaporized/pink misted by the sheer force of the blast and heat. I definitely agree that Halo could have more amounts of blood and gore in a tasteful manner. Tasteful as in somewhat realistic. Read some of the deaths in the book Halo The Flood, that gets pretty realistically graphic and only serves to show just how terrifying some of the weapons in the Halo universe are.

Yes, exactly like Sangheili Field Commander Noga Putumee in William C. Dietz’s The Flood. Energy Swords can get a lil “dicey” too!

Yeah… Energy swords could turn things super gorey real quick. Then again so could needlers. Anyone remember the woman who exploded in Forward Unto Dawn? XD
I’d play it, for sure. While I love the Chief and his story arc, I would also like to see the universe expand with more spin-off or Reach-style prequel titles - playing as Marines, ODSTs, lesser-known Spartans, or even entire games played as Covenant forces.
I’ve seen the idea on here before of a horror themed game starring the Flood, that’d be awesome as well. Or, maybe even an entire prequel game depicting the Flood-Forerunner war… all great possibilities.
Considering how ambitious Microsoft’s goals seem to be, to keep the franchise around for decades more to come (and surely they’ll run out of Master Chief stories at some point), I wonder if we might get our wish.
