[IDEA] Dynamic Weather Multiplayer Maps

I seriously hope anyone from 343 reads this and passes it on.

My idea is to have dynamic versions of multiplayer maps. When a game starts, the game randomly selects a combination of weather conditions the map will be in. Examples:

All maps

  • Morning / Daytime / Sunset / Night
  • Clear / Rain / Storm (with lightning)
  • Clear / Mist

Snowy maps (in addition)

  • Clear / Snowy / Snowstorm

Sandy maps (in addition)

  • Clear / Sandstorm

This brings several cool things. When it’s misty or a snowstorm/sandstorm is going on, you can’t see too far in the distance. Also, it takes less time before maps get boring, because you have all kinds of different versions of the map with different circumstances. Imagine the cool combinations: totally clear daytime version (like most Halo maps now), sandstormy morning version (with some sand on your HUD), rainy nighttime version, foggy/morning version, etc.

While I do agree with the idea, I think than rather it being a randomly chosen combination, it should be a set of options instead. If you want you could set it to random.

I really like your idea! That would make much variability for maps when one map would have many quite big difference without strongly affecting gameplay.

But it might be very time taking to do… Maybe, dunno.

I hope they would at least consider this idea.

Indeed, it would be optional but online it would default to ‘Random’.

I would like to see something like this in H4, at the moment you can only simulate such with the forge visual effects. Reminds me of the enviornments in gears 2 and 3 how the map changes over time.

Seems a good idea but Halo is a frenetic game, and the partially blindness could remove this frenzy.
Halo isn’t Gears of War but maybe in playlist like Invasion or Big Team this idea can be interesting.

True, but snow/sandstorm/rain/day/night would certainly fit into Halo. But we really don’t know about H4’s visuals yet, maybe they do have depth of field.

Well snow and rain in the maps, for me, are totally approved!

I love this idea, as long as it doesn’t go from day/night.

It should be like the map starts, and then there is 2 of these: rainy/sunny/foggy/windy/snowy, yeah.

For example the game starts with a rainy wheater and after haft the game has gone, it start to get sunny.

But the map should always be during day or night themed, exept if it’s firefight.

storm effects and that would be cool and would work but having rain, snowstorm and sandtorms just isn’t going to work because if you do an indoor map with a hole in the roof to for the wheather to come through will just cause it to go through the entire map, like what we see in reach with water.

sounds really good

Not to try to hijack this thread, but the idea about blizzards and snowstorms just gave me a brilliant idea for a map. I’m imagining this forerunner bridge with this bubble around it that is keeping the weather out. At various point around the map there are coils that when destroyed lower the bubble temporarily and cause the weather to pass through. The walkways that are exposed to the weather have altered physics - airborne grenades are moved by the storm and the walkways become somewhat slippery reducing player acceleration.

Didn’t they want to do that for Reach but ran out of time?

Not if they program it properly.

then they’d have to make the rain, snow or sand an individual object to actually colide with the forge pieces, this would put way to much strain on the xbox and probably cause the entire performance to break down.

Depends on how they handle particle programming and object collision programming. Kojima Productions have shown (with their Fox Engine) that it’s possible to place a new object in an environment and have everything, including particles and AIs react to it accordingly. Not saying it isn’t difficult but if handled right it could be done without straining the xbox.

hm… ok, i would like to see it if it works then …

I actually had the same idea a while ago! I always thought it would be cool if we had options to play on powerhouse at night (like the campaign) with snipers. Also I think rain would make a cool addition, like how the ground would be all shiny and maybe it would affect warthog traction too.

It would be cool, but I think there is way to many things to take into consideration if they add some sort of ground traction system etc. based on the weather. I’ll be just as happy if they add weather and time-of-day effects just for visuals. You can always hope though.
