I am trying to find better ways to play this game as when I play against anyone who is better then average I lose. Ultimately I am striving for excellence, but steps have to be taken to get there. What I am asking is how do you think I should take those steps.
Well, for one, if you want to be one of the best, you have to play like the best. It sounds obvious enough, but it’s not a simple as you might think. If you want to improve, I’d suggest taking a look at the strats that good players use, the combos they like to run, and how responsive they are to things happening around them.
For example, every good player rushes; there is no exception. So, you should first try rushing. Then, you’ll have to learn how to rush well, the tactics behind rushing with certain combos in specific situations, and, most importantly, you’ll have to learn how to rush cost-effectively, dealing heavy damage, but maintaining a good economy.
Still, a lot of getting good at Halo Wars can be attributed to awareness and macro. I feel that this game has very little to do with micro when you’re in a team setting, which is where most of your time on Halo Wars will be spent. If I were you, I’d go looking for YouTube channels to watch. From what I’ve seen, there aren’t any “bad” players uploading now, but I may be wrong. As far as I know, you could take something from almost every player out there who’s posting games. Some, of course, are better than others, but you can decide who you like and who you don’t.
Lastly, one of the most important things to not only getting good at Halo Wars, but having fun with it, is teammates. No game is fun if you’re the only one playing it; it can quickly become a chore, not a game. Whether you shoot straight for playing with the best, or if you’d rather get better with your own group of friends, you need a group to play with.
