I Would Have Been Your Daddy, but...

The Grunts and Elites don’t speak English in-game anymore. Does anyone else miss being able to understand what they’re saying?

I sure miss their dum’d accent.

Not really. Makes all of the enemies seem more alien and menacing. Also, I doubt a Covenant sect that hates humans would speak English.

Yes, a lot.

I can see why they did it with Reach, “dehumanizing” the Covenant aided the game’s more mature themes of loss and tragedy. But there was no reason to do it for Halo 4. The game just lost some of its humour because of that.

The others didn’t speak English either. ONI just put out a translator patch. Guess they don’t have one for this sect.

Edit: Actually the translator PARTIALLY works. Occasional words leak through… Like “DEMON” for instance.

I’m pretty sure that was accounted for by UNSC translation technology.

I do miss being able to understand them, but I think the whole alien language thing makes much more sense. Would have been nice if they had some dialogue if you had the iwhbyd skull.

I know they were only being translated through the suit’s software, but I really miss the Grunts calling MC a “Filthy demon unclean with the stupid”

Halo: Reach at least had SOME English dialogue from the grunts.

On New Alexandria you can sometimes hear the Grunts saying “It’s funny, but I sometimes dream in English.”

And in Firefight, I chased a Grunt down and he screamed “Save me Sangheili!”

I just miss it.

There’s a grunt that speaks English in Reach on New Alexandria? where at?

While, yes, I do miss the English speaking Covenant, “Leader dead, run AWAY!”, There may very well be canonical reason why they don’t.

These are pretty much “Insurrectionist” Covenant. They still partially believe in the message of the Prophets and despise the fact that the Arbiter is still working on the Human-Sanghelli Alliance.

Now, as these “innie” Covenant hate Humanity, they also refuse to speak any Human language, unlike Arby and his posse.

At least that’s the best I can come up with.

YES.

What’s the point of IWHBYD if it’s half the fun?

Also, Cortana was able to translate the Covie chatter at the crash site on Requiem. Yet Chief’s suit which was supposedly upgraded can’t. This hardware change is disgustingly bad. No flashlight, no English Covies, less traction, low jump height, no second weapon on the HUD.

Chief, you need to shed your new -Yoinking!- ugly armor and put on your classic suits…

I do. Even in Reach, i didn’t find the aliens to be THAT menacing. I fear the weapons m ore than the creatures behind them in game IMO. If 343 decided they should speak basic again, then i won’t complain. The Covenant seem less memorable ;/.

On another note…OUR FOE SEEKS TO EVADE US!

No. If you played Halo Wars, there’s a tidbit of unlockable information saying 500 teams of Grunts and Elites were to learn and master the human language, (the language of the unclean), using it exclusively between each other. Elites and Grunts can and are actually speaking English in the previous Halo titles. The Covenant in Halo 4 simply either don’t know, or don’t care to speak the humans’ language. Obviously Jul 'Mdama can understand it, but only has limited capabilities in speaking it.

I rather speak their language and understand it. I want to learn what they say by learning their language.

I guess it’s not just on New Alexandria, just anytime a Grunt is sleeping with the IWHBYD Skull on.

i really miss that man that was the best hearing what they had to say

The skull you referenced should have turned their English speaking voices on.

In that case, does IWHBYD even change dialogue frequency for Covies?

No more Sleepsassinations.

I love the H4 campaign, but the audio profile of the grunts irritates the heck out of me. They sound mechanical, distant and unintelligible, although I’ve heard enough to pick up that they are speaking English at times. I really miss lobbing a sticky onto the forehead of a grunt and hearing “Run Away!”
