I miss duel wielding, and I wish it was in H5G. Not just for nostalgia’s sake, but because I think it could have made for a very interesting way to make the game. Halo 2 Anniversary had an interesting idea; you can choose between three “loadouts” (don’t run away screaming), SMG, Plasma Rifle, and Magnum, all three weak, but duel wieldable weapons.
I think this is a fun way to balance the game. Everyone starts with these three starter weapons, and can go two routes: pick up another duel-wield weapon to go along with the one you spawned with, or pick up a stronger weapon on the map (AR, BR, Carbine). I think it presents a greater element of choice. Of course, as a result there’d be tons of dropped duel-wieldable weapons lying around. So in that case, they’d have to despawn relatively quickly.
In Halo 3, duel-wield weapons were looked at as useless. And they were, on their own. I think duel-wields’ place in Halo’s weapon sandbox should as starter weapons. Just as a general comment, I believe Halo’s weapon hierarchy should go like this:
Starter weapons (SMG, Plasma Rifle, Magnum, etc.)
Medium weapons (AR, BR, Carbine, etc.)
Power weapons (Rocket Launcher, Sniper Rifle, Energy Sword, etc.)
I personally wasn’t a fan of dual wielding so much. Grenades dominated H2, giving up the ability to throw them to have an extra weapon slot always seemed like a drawback.

I agree. I thought I’d miss dual wielding in Halo 4, but to be honest, I’m happy it’s not in it, and I’m relieved to hear it’s not in Halo 5.
I remember loads of people complaininng that duel wielding wasn’t in halo 4 but whenever I go online in the mcc on a halo 2/3 match no one duel wields. You just see me running around with duel spikers on H3
Halo 2 Anniversary also just killed dual wielding. In H2, it was very useful in CQC maps. Only a moron would dual SMGs, but in SMG starts, two could be better than one. Pair anything with a magnum, a plasma pistol, or a plasma rifle, and you’re rolling. Dual SMG/PR/Spiker was also rather effective in H3. Dumbing down the plasma pistol hurt the effectiveness of it.
But have you tried the SMG/Plasma Rifle combo in H2A? It’s straight up pathetic. It’s like they said “we’ll have dual wielding in the game for nostalgia purposes, but it won’t actaully be effective.”
I wish the option was still there. Maps like Turf where you navigate the back hallways, it was very useful to balance out the shotgun. Plus, it was another form of strategy that didn’t include spamming grenades.
Duel wielding effects balancing issues, essentially holding 2 weapons cannot be strongly overwhelming and therefore having one is useless cuz it’s too weak; you are forced to pickup a 2nd or swap the weapon out. Everyone on spawn need to have a fighting chance and simply spawning with a single weapon meant for duel wield doesn’t cut it.
I agree but the balancing issues is the problem… I would think though why not make the mechanic non-competitive, like campaign, firefight, spartan ops, custom games, forge, perhaps even social matchmaking.
I loved dual wielding, opened up a lot of variety in CQB.
Particularly loved the SMG/Plasma rifle combo in most cases.
And to those saying you are giving up grenades, it’s not that difficult or slow to press Y to drop your other weapon to quickly throw a grenade, I’ve done it numerous times either to cover my retreat or catch a retreating enemy.
I know Bungie first did it in Reach, but that made sense because they were older Spartans. These new Spartans should have the strength and technology to grab more firepower. I always loved duel wielding and though it was one of the things to make Halo unique. I was confused by the fact they took it out of Halo 4, and now I know they are not bringing it back. It seems like the more advanced the Spartan get the weaker they are. I am totally for this but it is illogical that shield to stay down while sprinting. Great idea, but should have been implemented in Halo 4 first.
