"I was a 49"

Hi all,

One player said recently in a game: “I was a 49 in Halo 3”. I have not idea what that means. Could somebody please translate that into a Halo 45 level, please? He didn’t seem to be a very good Halo 5 player …

Thanks!

Max rank in Halo 3 was 50.

Well, I don’t know what that means. So he was a “Champ” in Halo 3?

Could somebody please translate 49 and 50 into Halo 5 levels, please?

Usually people that say you weren’t a 50 in H3 are using that as an insult, but I don’t really know the context of your conversation. For H5, it would be like a diamond or maybe low onyx level? If we’re using Dr Menke’s ranking, then it’s around a low diamond or high platinum.

Here you go:

CSR and 1-50 Equivalencies

Thanks! I understand now. That means 49 ~ Diamond 3.

May I ask one more question? What is the percentage distribution of the levels? Is it a “normal distribution/bell curve”? For example like this:

  • 5% Bronze - 15% Silver - 30% Gold - 30% Platinum - 15%Diamond - 5% Onyx

The answer to the bold question is that it is a distribution bell curve.

From my understanding every season they look to see if any adjusting is required toward the ranks in order to keep them within certain population percentages. I’m aware that they try to keep Bronze and Onyx at approximately 2% of the population each. As for the percentages they try to ensure between the other ranks I’m not exactly sure, but the mean divide exists between Gold 6 to Platinum 1 so Gold and Platinum should be the largest percentages and similarly reflect each other. Silver and Diamond should have smaller percentages than Gold and Plat, but obviously larger than Bronze and Onyx, while also sharing similar percentages between each other.

If you take a look at Halo Tracker’s CSR Breakdown for the current season you’ll see a reflection of the bell curve with the percentages; though, a large percentage of a playlist’s tracked population has yet to earn their ranks within the playlist so that’s going to affect the percentages throughout the bell curve, but mostly those within the middle.

It’s hard to say where he could relate in newer halos since skill based ranking systems aren’t used anymore.

Thank you!

This conversation makes me what Ranks back…Capitan, Lt. Colonel, 4 Star Generals…Just one of the little things I miss.

I think I pulled a 43 on Team SWAT with my original tag… and I was happy with that as largely a solo player!

It means nothing. Halo 3 was easy to rank up in. A legit 49 in Halo 2 however is another story.

I’ve heard differently.

Well this shows you have never played it. Don’t believe everything you hear. Halo 2 was WAY harder to rank up in. Had a bigger skill gap than 3.

I played it. I just didnt play competitively much. The whole “skill gap” thing tends to shrink and grow depending on the skill of the player.

The hard part of ranking up in H2 was mainly all the cheaters and boosters. I swear everytime I was about to rank up I would get standbyed.

Sure, they may’ve been a 49…

But in what Playlist?

It’s kind of crazy to see that according to this I have been ranked a “50” before in Halo 5. I don’t consider myself amazing at this game at all, but that is a very large gap from what I was ranked in H2/H3 lol.

It’s funny because I think folks are getting the whole “rank” vs “skill rank” confused.

In Halo 3, your “skill rank” was 1-50… Then your “rank” was more of a military rank. Like my account. I was a 50, but because I only played arena, I didn’t have enough XP to be a “General” rank.

In Halo 5, the “skill rank” is determined in the BRONZE-CHAMPION ranks. But your “rank” is the whole 1-152… Which means absolutely nothing.
