I want to see John retire - a good end to his arc

John-117 is an incredible character. I fell in love with the character ever since I played Halo: Combat Evolved and knew this guy was so awesome. I thought he was just a cool guy with the most amazing combat skills, nothing going on with the character himself. However, then I read Halo: The Fall of Reach. That book completely changed my look at him. Yes, he is still the best fighter, but he is a person. He has a very horrific, traumatic past that shaped him into what he is today. He became the greatest solider in Humanity in the 26th century at a cost of his potential life. Reading Halo: First Strike, Halo: The Flood, and Halo: Ghosts of Onyx (for the time he’s in it) made me love the character even more. He has saved the galaxy so many times. Over the decades of fighting, he’s lost those closest to him, and each time, it’s had an impact on him. In Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2 and Halo 3, he sadly wasn’t very interesting, and didn’t have much of a character or an arc going for him. However, that all changed with Halo 4. Like what we got with the novels, Halo 4 dove into John as a character, as a man. He began an amazing arc in that game, especially by that incredible ending. Halo: Escalation - The Next 72 Hours did a semi-good follow-up to his arc. Yes, much of the other stuff in that arc was trash, but John’s continued development was a highlight, especially that ending. At the end of The Next 72 Hours, John and Blue Team return to Earth, with Hood saying they have earned R&R. John however, tells Blue Team they’ve been reassigned. He didn’t want to stop and think about the loss he just went through, and probably those he’s lost in the past as well. Halo 5: Guardians is next. At the beginning of the game, he’s still coping with the loss of Cortana, going mission after mission to keep himself occupied. However, early on the game, he finds out Cortana is indeed alive and is hoping to bring her home. I,like many, was not happy with the decision to bring Cortana back after her amazing death scene. However, the idea of turning her into a villain is an interesting one. Not so much of making a former protagonist into the main villain, but its effects on John. Throughout Halo 5, John is barley in the game, which disappointed me quite a bit, as I was looking forward to seeing his arc continue. Though his scene toward the end of the game with Cortana had a pretty interesting line that I felt was a good piece of development for him. That is when Cortana says she’s offering people a chance to be more than they are naturally. John responds with “Like Doctor Halsey did for me.” This is John questioning what was done to him all those years ago, which was not he was like when he was younger. After the supposed death of Cortana, it seems John has begun questioning things. Halo 6 is going to be an interesting game. In the past, he was fighting enemies led by people he had no attachment to and wanted to see defeated. Cortana is a former friend of John, who turned her back on Humanity, and on him. I’m hoping Halo 6 focuses on John dealing with fighting against a former friend, and if he will be willing to kill her. At the end of Halo 6, I’m hoping John does kill Cortana, but this has a major impact on him. I’m hoping at the end of the game, John is questioning everything he’s done in his life. As a result, he needs time to know himself, which leads to him retiring. Yes, it would be amazing to see John go out in a final blaze of glory, no argument there. However, I think this would be the more uncertain direction for him. He’s ready to go out with a bang, but to have a life beyond the military? How does one do that? I think seeing John retiring from the UNSC would be a more satisfying close to his arc/character rather than him sacrificing himself. Now, you could bring him back out of retirement one last time in Halo 7, but have him take a backseat, and he could could sacrifice himself in that game. I think this would be a great end of an arc to an incredible character.

I want an admiral Cole type of send off for chief…basically another halo 3 ending where everyone thinks he is gone but he is alive, just around loved ones on a peaceful planet

Would feel like too much of a repeat of the ending of Halo 3. Him retiring would make him uncertain, as he’s only ever had a military life.

What’s he gonna do when he retires then?

My ideal end for him would be to have him retire from active combat and just focus on training new generations of Spartan IVs, sort of like Kurt or Jun but with a much more active role. By doing this the quality of Spartans would increase and he would still be around if needed.

I would really be disappointed if he retires. I mean first of all, he is a battle hardened child solider who is having a mental crisis in a war zone.
Secondly we have played as this hardcore, steroid pumped super solider for 15 years and he has been a hardass, buttkicking silent character the entire time. That would just be simply anti-climatic.
Thirdly, he was offered break time after the events of Halo 4 (in one of the comics) and he replied by directly disobeying orders by getting new missions. Chief retiring is way out of character.

Im just very against this idea, it seems incorrect, anticlimactic and once again out of character.

perhaps. But i think better ending would be war ending and humanity starting to rebuild. All things have to end, so why leave the universe in neverending war. What is this supposed to be? Call Of Duty? Nah, and there will be a time when its better to leave it be as it is. And if the franchise needs to continue then there is decades of Halo lore before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved just waiting to be told. That includes the beginning of Chiefs career and dozens of other characters, even other than SPARTANs like the ODST’s and even marines.

I agree. He needs to quit.

Halo 3 was the best sendoff he could have gotten, and now we need something else. In terms of the character, Halo 4 sent him on a journey to become human again, and it only makes sense for Halo 6 (or 7, if they really want to milk us) to finish that journey.

By the end of this saga, John will be emotionally drained for having to kill his closest friend barring Blue Team and having everyone he knows die. Then he has to suffer this best friend being called an evil, crazed AI- recollected in the history books as intergalactic -Yoink!-. But he remembers the real Cortana, the kind, loving, human Cortana- and she means a great deal to him.

I imagine the last scene of the saga to be similar to the end of Halo 3, at the Voi memorial. A ceremony for the lost, 21 guns, and a big statue for the memorial. Lasky holds a touching speech about the lost, everyone present gets emotional. Chief is confronted by Hood, who asks him where he wants to be assigned next, suggesting perhaps a leadership role such as Admiral and “God knows, you’ve earned it”. John kindly refuses and says he is done with war, done with the UNSC. “I’ve been fighting all my life, Admiral.” or some such.

Then the final shot is John approaching the memorial, removing his helmet (where we finally see the scarred, battered, sad face of a middle-aged man). There is a tear in his eye, and he removes something from his pocket. Cortana’s chip. He approaches the statue and hangs the chip on it by the chain, then walks away and never looks back.

Duuuude, that would legit have me in tears. He’s been through so much he can’t take it anymore. We get a close to his arc/character and we finally get to see his face.

John and the remaining active SIIs will live and die on the front lines of battle. The SIIs themselves even realize that is their fate. It’s what they were bred for.

I want to see a development of the character. He expects that to happen, but this emotional turmoil would be very unexpected for him. Would show his Humanity coming through. Many games end with the hero going out in a blaze of glory. Him retiring would make him even more Human, and having us know he is in charge of his life.

Not that they’ll go out in a ‘blaze of glory’, I just believe they’ll be on the front lines till death. Maybe we’ll see a SII infected by the flood. Who knows.

Him retiring will kind of ruin his character. John knows that he and the other SIIs are needed by humanity. It’s really an impressive perspective, because at the same time he realizes how badly him and the other SIIs were -Yoinked!- over.

A development in character to me. Would be John and the other SIIs turning on ONI/UNSC eventually. They do have Halsey , Locke , and Thel. The 3 of them have a very similar dislike or distrust of ONI

Whether John retires or goes out guns blazing, it will be okay. Everything that has a beginning has an end. And I’m confident that no matter what happens, the end of John’s story will be satisfying.

Very true, I’m cool with either outcome.

Not sure, but I don’t think the point is so much to give him another job. But simply so 343i doesn’t kill him. That’d be horrible. So retire him. Keep him around here and there in games, comics, books etc. But he can not die. It’d be to much for the fans. And just not right.

Combat is all that John has ever known, at this point would he even be capable of adjusting to a civilian life?

That’s the point of the direction, he’s been shaken up and doesn’t know what to do. He’s seen too much and has lost so much. If anyone deserves to retire, it’s John.

HELL no. John is a warrior. Warriors ought die in battle.

John is a warrior yes. However, he’s a Human. The dying in battle is the easy way to end his character. I’m not saying it’s bad, but it’s the predictable route. Would leave an impact on the audience.

The Chief is more than capable of adapting to a life off the front lines - as are all the Spartan-IIs. We’ve seen Maria-062 and Randall-037 do this. So there’s no reason the Chief couldn’t or wouldn’t if given the opportunity, especially if Kelly, Fred, and Linda will be around as well to keep him company and support each other.
