I want to embrace the best details on the gameplay

I’ve been kind of a d*ck about the game look but truth be told, technically-wise it has some stunning tech on screen.

The moment the player is about to get in control, you can perfectly see in the lower-right side of the screen how shadows are moving as the global illumination and the fast-spinning Halo naturally provoke a beautifully accelerated day-night cycle. You can also see in the same gif how subsurface scattering makes the light go through the trees leaves.

It is pretty noticeable how fast is the day-night cycle looking at the sun position. Across the gameplay, the light becomes more and more orange as the sun fades, but you can actually all of the sun when he just goes up in the elevator, and then how the sun is partially hidden behind some damaged part of the ring:

This level of illumination is very demanding for the GPU and I think it’s going to give us lots of beautiful landscapes.

I’ve also noticed some brute armor parts would fall under fire, but others just dispel like promethean enemies dying, they may be using promethean tech:

They carefully took care of the physics, Halo 2 and 3 (and 4?) classic explosive fuel tanks can now be pierced and be propelled by the burning fuel coming out of this holes. For example, in the next gif you can notice a green flare in the back, that’s a dead grunt’s respirator that just exploded, and out of sight, next to it, there’s a fuel tank. The respirator explosion pierced some holes on it, so it just flies propelled by this holes and explodes in the air:

You can also see some other pretty cool details, like some particles bouncing, everything being reflected on the water where the Chief kills the first grunts, or a wheel on the warthog being lost when a suicide grunt explodes just next to it, a brute tripping when it’s shoot in the leg, other bringing his hand to his hurt back when it gets a shotgun shot from the back, etc.

It still looks cartoony and flat. I’ve seen open world games with much better graphics.

There are some obvious old build deatils like disappearing plants in the screen lower border and some los quality shadows on mid-distance, as well as some other techniques like ambient oclussion looks missing and the first brutes with the “blocky” armour may make it feel flatter and cartoonier than it is. Later brutes have armours more similar than Halo 3’s ones and probably most of the illumination looks kinda weird because of the sunset, thinking of it feels like they picked that time of the day to make more noticeable the day/night global illuminated cycle (which could be really impressive if the map is single, full sandbox).

Halo always had a Cartoony look to it if you want realistic graphics and open world i have two ways for you:

  1. Play that Game instead
  2. Go outside

i liked these little details, as mentioned the Warthog losing it’s tire, which was never before in a Halo Game and I like the fact that it has a Day/Night Cycle as it probably will also affect the enemies behavior in certain ways i would imagine:

  1. You are harder to see at Night
  2. Enemies asleep or less Enemies patrolling around.

TBH Bungie’s Halos didn’t had realistic proportions but they weren’t this “cartooney”, they were colorful but that’s it. Halo 3’s and Reach’s enemies armours featured high poly counts as well as a very nice treatments for materials, reflections, shaders, etc, while the first brutes shown in the gameplay have that kind of plastic rounded armours, even more simplistic than Halo Wars 2’s designs. The phantom indeed is just the same seen in Halo Wars 2 and the bulky, exaggerated aesthetics definitely aren’t my favourite but I guess most of people were asking for that, and they may be just faction related aesthetics, It would be nice to see some kind of new Covenant in addition to the Banished, bringing some mix of Bungie’s and Halo 4 and 5 designs.

It could also bring some variety to the gameplay if the same enemies have slightly different types, example given Halo 5’s hunters can return nades and are very difficult to dodge when you are close and they melee. Maybe Banished hunters could be like previous ones, maybe tougher but also slower and manageable in close distances.
