Do you have any evidence to back up your claim? Clearly we get better population distribution without them other wise they wouldn’t have taken them away .

Have they said that they have better population distribution?
Either way, people are going to hop into whatever playlist they think is the most popular. For example, I only bother jumping into Social Slayer so far because I have no idea how many people are in the other playlists. The population counter bias works both ways. If I could see that people are playing other playlists, I have a higher chance of giving those a shot.
Let’s be honest, the decision to take away the population counter also came from higher up. I would imagine that Microsoft doesn’t want the numbers of their golden goose franchise out there. It’s awfully suspicious that they only made this decision after the Halo 4 population controversy.

I know first hand people will play what they want to play. It was apparent with the outcry for separate playlists. They took them away because they are afraid of people seeing how few people actually play the franchise compared with other fps. They want the illusion that everyone is playing halo and that they didn’t screw up the franchise (they did).

Here in Asia, I wouldn’t be surprised if the population is in the lower double digits. Nearly every match I get into is with the same exact people.

Being that they have the Xbox live “most played games” in the Xbox store I would say they aren’t that afraid. Games are rated there by server population. H5 & MCC are pretty far down the list usually in the low to mid 20s place wise. But people asking for playlist population just shows they don’t want to play what they want to play, they want to play what’s “popular”. It’s pretty clear playlist population counters aren’t helpful at all.

I’d accept percentage stats on each playlist, as I said in my opening statement.

That would more likely do the same thing. Players would gravitate towards the bigger numbers.

You and 343 would have a point if the average player would sit in a lobby for longer than 5 minutes at a time. The fact is that if a player doesn’t find a match soon, they will simply exit the playlist and try what they previously have had luck with. Isn’t that also a self fulfilling prophecy?
If you want to talk about effective ways to distribute population, how about managing the playlist options and making sure they are all attractive as possible? If a playlist is particularly low, why not encourage players to play it by throwing in some kind of bonus or perk?

You couldn’t be further from the truth, people want a population counter because they don’t want to be queued up for a match for 15 min thinking its because of a connection issue and its actually because hardly anyone is playing that playlist.

If you are searching that long you either have a connection issue or you should have tried a different playlist like five or ten minutes ago.

Even searching for 5 min is boring and frustrating

Even if we don’t get a population counter per playlist, 343i at the very least should give us a total population counter for people playing the Master Chief Collection.

Oh yeah I remember mcc getting me into matches within 5 mins… oh wait.

That is completely missing the point. Population counters help identify the right time to play a particular playlist as it really can vary. For example when i was going for my throwback 50 if there was less than 100 people searching I’m pretty much guaranteed not to get a game in any reasonable amount of time. So i would just search another playlist while it builds. I don’t want to haven’t to check back after each game of h3 arena i search to see if its possible to get a game in hardcore just by waiting it out for 5 minutes.
They won’t add a population counter, simply due to the negativity and players tending to avoid low populated playlists. They can however implement a ‘‘heat map’’ similar to Halo 3 that simply shows where most of the playerbase is located at a given time. I think that will provide more relevant information to players outside of North America on why they sometimes have a hard time to matchmake. This however only works if the region-lock is lifted again.
They won’t add one because they don’t want people to see just how few players are actually playing. Halo 4 population showed the game was completely dead within a year. They won’t add population to H5 or MCC because the reality is not many are playing them.

They don’t add them because they don’t add value.
Has anyone in this thread actually had a difficult time finding a match in any of the playlists ? Because if not this is all pointless.
