It is so sad that arena shooters are dying in todays market everyone thinks it needs to be class based to be good while let me tell you something.
Halo 2 Population: 200k +
Halo 3 Popuation: 200K +
Halo reach: 75-100k
Halo 4: 20-30k
Just look at the numbers halo 3 and halo 2 had the most. Halo reach even though it had AAs and bloom it still was an arena shooter. Halo 4 was turned into a class based shooter to try to appeal to gamers from other shooters. Therefore ignoring the core fanbase and having the population decline super fast. Halo 4 added Game breaking perks like mobility and the most recent one survivor. It also added even more Armor abilities like jetpack, camo, and promethan which all make halo unbalanced not fun and class based just like cod. 1 shot secondary should never be any halo i.e boltshot. Plasma pistol as a loadout ruined big team so did plasma grenadesthey should be map pickups.
Halo 5 needs to: -Remove AAs and make them map pickups
Remove Jetpack and promethan vision
Put camo and overshield on map.
Have the AR be weak but not to weak like halo 3s to incourage map movement for better weapons.
Have ar/magnum be the default slayer/objective settings with BR start as a voting option.
Remove perks and loadouts all together.
Remove ordnance and put power weapons and weapons on the map again

> Halo 4s population: http://halocharts.com/2013/playlists_halo4.php
Okay my issue with this whole thing is that i just got done playing GTA V at my friends house and i read all of this in Trevors voice and…it was a bit werid and somehow it presented itself better but one thing that i think you don’t realize is that you are just asking for an up-to-date graphics Halo 3.
Halo has always been about innovation thats why i believe Halo 4 is failing, not because it was terrible it is because it had no innovation but stripped from other games. Which i can understand, i’m a writer and sometimes originality starts to run out so you have to look at other sources for inspiration.
So i don’t hate 343i for thinking we need some COD elements because that is what people want, clearly by COD sells they weren’t wrong but they were at the same time.
Few reasons why COD does so well is because it is multi-platform and simple. I’m not trying ti insult any COD players but the game is very simple in kills co,pared to Halo and 343i took elements from it because they thought that would bring in all the people when they didn’t really think hey…maybe the Halo fans don’t like COD fora reason but did what they assumed everyone would like and not just Halo fans.
Certainly they must focus on what Halo fans want to see which is total innovation rather than coping. I don’t think Halo copied anything. I know Bungie had firefight int heir minds but i recall them saying they didn’t know if it would go well with the fans until they saw how great Horde Mode turned out. Firefight is the closest thing that Halo mimicked and it was great.
So i say to 343i, hire some of these people here on the forums. You guys might not be truly the ones who hold the Halo perspective. You might think you are but lets not take any chances. Really look at the forum, see who’s good and whos bad than use their ideas, maybe just hire them for creative thinking. Hell some people have great ideas here but more than 99% of the ideas they come from XB1 threads won’t even be seen in the game because i am more than sure that 343i will do what hey please either way.
Going to have to go with the more balanced version of Halo 4. I’ve become attached to too many things.
Going up against all different types of people and weapons makes things so much more personal. Then coming back to the forums and seeing that everybody feels like they’re part of a separate group. It’s great to be able to go into the matchmaking section of the forums and say that your an AR user instead of just another guy that uses the same gun as everybody else because he has no choice. We have all these people now that are individualized, Carbine users, AR users, LR users. It says so much about a persons play style and personality and I don’t want to see that go.
Speaking of having a personal attachment to your own weapon, don’t touch my AR! It hasn’t been so fun to use sine CE in fact it’s probably better!
And wait Halo 4 didn’t add the AC and Jet pack AAs those were introduced in Reach and weapons being placed on the map have already been returned.
The Incineration cannon ain’t that big of an issue. Ordnance making it to easy to obtain is the issue.
Now that that’s out of the way about the population thing. Yes it went down with Halo 4 but assuming that it’s directly related to the class system or directly related to anyone’s complaints with the game is ridiculous and the competitive people seem to do this the most.
People left Halo 4 for tons of different reasons. First off I recommend you go over to that mega thread regarding Elites they’ll tell you all about how they started leaving during Reach because they didn’t receive enough support and then they were ditched completely in Halo 4. Elites made up 10% of Halo 3’s population.
Forgers, Machinimators, Fire fight fans, lag, I can go on with this but the point is Im sick of people thinking that there’s one single thing that drove so many people away. Even if you tell me that Halo 4 not being an arena shooter drove the majority of people away I’m gonna have a hard time believing that it was the majority by much.
Just one question: How well populated are console arena shooters in today’s world?
The problem with the idea that making Halo X1 as a faithful clone to the Halo 3 will automatically fix and recapture millions of gamers interest in Halo is just unsubstantiated wishful thinking because the people who played Halo 3 aren’t just guaranteed to jump back on board like it’s September 2007 all over again even if Halo X1 is Halo X1-3 Combat Devolved.
The fact is that Halo X1 will be released after CoD: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Titanfall, Destiny and around the time the next CoD will be releasing. 343i is going to have to make a compelling game in Halo X1 to get and keep players interest with competition like this.
In my opinion the Classic playlists should still exist in Halo X1 because it is still fun for some to play old school Halo but it should be limited to only 4 or 5 match types such as team death match, swat, team objective , etc.

I greatly prefer arena shooters to any other system, but when you list populations like that you have to consider the competition each title faced/faces during its lifespan. Halo 2 pretty much spearheaded online multiplayer for its generation of console.
With Halo 3 it had already a solid online reputation and I would wager that its only/major competitor for multiplayer player-bases was the original Modern Warfare.
Jumping to Halo: Reach and you’re not only competing against titles of the same year, but Halo’s multiplayer player-base may have been incrementally eroded by continual releases of CoD titles. Not to mention the shipped copy of Reach was a little bit of a disappointment.
Time has allowed other titles like CoD and Battlefield to grow and dominate in popularity, which brings us to Halo 4. I think we’ve reached a crossroad in Halo 4. If future titles go back to a solid arena shooter then it will serve what is becoming a niche market. If MS wants to compete for a greater population then unfortunately some things have to change.
Perhaps Halo 2 was fortunate to have Halo CE and Halo 3 was fortunate to have the online reputation of Halo 2. The Halo series in general is fortunate to be (I don’t want to say “first”, because some yahoo will always be like “yeah what about donkey hooters 2, that came before Halo CE man”) one of the flagship releases of the console generation.

Yeah, this angry group you are talking is the one I am apart of and was pissed off how 343i -Yoink- on the elites.
Making them look dumb, stupid and weak. Making them talk like the Halo 2 Elite model which had it so their mandibles didn’t even touch when they talked. Thanmaking them look like deranged demons.
I don’t know why 343i just made it seem like elites are just so inferior. Gek a most skilled Assassin was nearly killed by Thorne a recruit to the Spartan IV’s. If anything that battle should of been over before it even started, no "skilled assassin would ever even let their target know they are near. Not to mention that he clearly didn’t even see the rest of Majestic nearby. It was stupid of him to move in on Thorne with a squad near the area. Skilled Assassin is not what a bum rushing man with a sword should be called and so if he is skilledwhat does the rest of the Storm Covenant have to offer, just cannon fodder.

Elites in Spartan Ops to me seem to have been reduced to bumbling thugs from Looney Tunes.
