I’ve seen this basic idea in so many threads. Usually paired with some logic about how the ranked playlists are unfair to you because then you have to try hard. With the implication being that you will obviously do well without trying very hard.
Think about the other side of that.
90% of the people asking for a social playlist are doing so just to get matched against people who are worse than them. You do realize this makes the game suck for those people, right? It’s obviously your opinion about what you want to see in MM, but please stop with the insinuation that ranked-only playlists are unfair to you because you can’t go and make the game suck for people who are way worse than you.
Have to disagree with you…
If nothing more, the separation of ranked/social keeps the casual gamer out of competitive player’s teams. I’m sure most of the competitive players have lost only because they’ve had “that” teammate. You know which one I’m talking about. The one who goes 4/20 with 3 betrayals. The segregation of these two playlist keeps the “that” guy out of someone’s team who is hyper competitive (in most cases).
Meanwhile, in the social playlists you will always have scrubby “PR0 L33T” kill grinders who are trying way too hard and stat padding against people who are just playing for fun.
If 343i can somehow give more incentive for competitive players to play in ranked playlists (by rewarding more exp, visible 1-50 system, etc.) and give them less incentive to kill grind in social playlists, then the idea can work.
There was nothing wrong with the segregation in Halo 3. And I thought it was the best feature removed since then.
Don’t worry. I won’t play social.
There should be a ranked and social playlist. Ranked for when you want to try hard and get your level up and social for when you just want to destroy and have random fun.
The problem isn’t the playlist it’s allowing full teams to play in said list.
YEAH ! good luck with that =)
it’s called Infinity Slayer duh.
Another thing to add is when you have social and competitive playlist you can actually try out different guns in social playlists. I would like to try out the Carbine, but I’m not going to since everyone I play uses the DMR or BR which just out guns the Carbine.
If 343i really wants to have gun diversity then they should separate the two playlists like what H3 did.

This is literally the exact sentiment I was talking about. The I “just want to destroy and have fun” concept is exactly what is going to make the game suck for players in that social playlist that you are destroying.
@Don Engracio
Perhaps I have a misunderstanding how matchmaking currently works, but if you had 1 master playlist (like we do now), with a TruSkill system (which I think is active but hidden), then a competitive, good player should never be put in a game with someone who routinely goes 4/20 with 3 betrayals. Those players would have drastically different TruSkill ratings.
My point is that with only a “ranked” playlist, the players who don’t care or are bad are going to naturally filter to the bottom and not get paired with good players who are focused on improving their ranking. With two lists, the same think will happen in ranked, but then the good players will also come over and just destroy people in social games.
Maybe I just have a very different motivation for playing matchmaking than most people on this forum. I’m an ok player, I like to win and do well, but I don’t care at all what the number next to my name is. My #1 priority in matchmaking is to get matched against people of similar skill, so that I’m not getting my face smashed in by people who are way better than me.
