So I got my Halo 5 console today. Sweet. Got it up and running, started slowly downloading my digital games.
Housemate came in, set up a second profile, under his gamertag, so he can install some apps while I’m cooking. I didn’t notice.
Sat down over dinner, started putting in the limited edition code. Typed the one in for the Halo 5: Guardians + Warzone Req Bundle + Reach animated series.
And then I notice it’s under his gamertag. Well, -Yoink!-, as I see in the forums. -Yoink! Yoink! Yoinkety! Yoink!- and other such words.
Switched from his gamertag, back to mine. Put in the code for my FOTUS armor & emblem. At least that’s something, right?
So… how -Yoinked!- am I? I’ll still be able to play, and watch the animation, right? I just cost myself the REQ pack, and it’s now registered to his account? (And he doesn’t even like Halo…) Or is the situation better or worse than that?
I knew I should have just entered the code online instead of on the console…
The second time, Support told me I was out of luck, and would not be able to play my game, because it was registered to my roommate’s account, not mine.
The supervisor told me I was out of luck. Theoretically, Microsoft has no way to invalidate a key and issue a new one, or move a key from one gamertag to another, even with the owners of both gamertags on the phone simultaneously. The only way I’ll be able to play Halo 5 on my new Halo 5 console is if I buy a new copy. After $500 for the console, another $90 for a second deluxe copy is just… obscene.
Tell your friend to ask for a refund. They will make a one time refund. Then he can give you the money in cash since hes probably gonna use that refund credit anyway.
Best option I can recommend is have him set your new Xbox as his home Xbox, that way any account on the Xbox can play the games he has. You both can have it as your home Xbox, ya’ll will get to share everything excluding in-game transaction purchases. Those are linked I to an online profile, not a gamertag. This way you at least get to play

This is your best bet in terms of avoiding another transaction. If your roommate was a good guy, he’d credit you the cost, but at the same time, it’s not entirely his fault either.
