Many people convince themselves that:
“Oh, yeah, there is definitely something going on between Chief and Cortana. Isn’t it so sweet?”
But I don’t buy that.
- Cortana is an AI. It’s not like they can get married or something. They’re totally out of each other’s league.
- They don’t act like lovesick love birds when they’re around each other. When someone’s in love you can totally tell. The distant gaze in their eyes. Every time you say something, they mistake it for the name of the person they like, etc.
I think it’s more like a brother/sister relationship. They know each other well, they’ve kind of bonded through all the chaos of battle, and Cortana is Halsey’s clone. It’s in the Halo 4 dialogue if you think I am making crap up. John considers Halsey his mom, Cortana appears young so the couldn’t be Halsey’s twin. She’s totally like Halsey’s daughter (I am totally not thinking about Jango and Boba. Why would you think that?)
So my conclusion is that Cortana is pretty much Chief’s sis.

I don’t think that she is a sister. I think that she is more of a mom to Chief.
Pretty much the only people who thought there was something romantic going on between Chief and Cortana were 343.
Apparently people can’t just be extremely close and important to each other any more, they have either be in love or hate each other.

Yes, the relationship between Master Chief and Cortana was always left up to the player when Bungie was in charge. They even have a video where they can’t even really explain it themselves, it’s really whatever you want it to be.
343, however, wants to force a weird romantic relationship between them. Halo 4’s ending was seriously embarrassing for me. Especially when I had friends or family watching me play the end and seeing that last scene where she’s all emotional and crying or whatever.
I think it’s been too long since I’ve played the ending of Halo 4 cuz I completely missed that. Whoops.
I don’t necessarily mind the romantic route? But I always liked the rather subtle relationship Chief and Cortana had in the original trilogy of Halo. I never really saw it as directly romantic, but they were definitely super close.

Cortana was becoming more human, realising how much she wanted to be free of her limitations as an AI.
Whats romantic about how her last, dying moments, she wanted to reach out and feel something real for the first time ever?
